Maharashtra: BJP Leader Girish Mahajan Meets Eknath Shinde, Discusses Swearing-In Ceremony

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Girish Mahajan met Maharashtra’s caretaker Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, on Monday. Shinde, who had been suffering from a throat infection and fever, is recovering well.
Mahajan stated that during their meeting, they discussed preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of the next Maharashtra Chief Minister, which is scheduled for December 5.
He also underlined that there are no conflicts among the leaders of the Mahayuti alliance.
“I came here to meet Eknath Shinde, who has not been well for the past few days. There is no displeasure. We sat together for an hour and had a conversation. He also discussed preparations for December 5, and I shared some thoughts as well. We have a lot of work to do for the people of the state, and we are going to work together for them,” Girish Mahajan told reporters after his meeting with Shinde.
Earlier on Sunday, Shinde had confirmed that he had recovered from the fever and was in good health.
On Thursday evening, Shinde, along with Devendra Fadnavis (widely considered the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s position), Ajit Pawar, and other Mahayuti leaders, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President JP Nadda in Delhi to discuss the ongoing deadlock over the Chief Ministerial role.
The Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, secured a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections held on November 23. However, the alliance has yet to finalize its Chief Ministerial candidate. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 132 seats in the 280-member Assembly, while its allies–the Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, and the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar–won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a major setback in the recently held Maharashtra elections. Congress won only 16 out of 288 assembly seats, while its alliance partner, Shiv Sena (UBT), won 20 seats. The NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) secured only 10 seats.

Maharashtra Govt Plans Crackdown On Drug Menace; CM Devendra Fadnavis Announces Special Drive, Legal Reforms

Mumbai: To deliver a blow to the drug menace, the state government is mulling several moves, including lowering the age of juveniles in drug-related cases, a special narcotics drive and preparing standard operating procedures (SOP) for handling foreigners like Nigerians involved in drug trafficking.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Makes The Announcement
CM Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement in the assembly on Monday, after MLA Vilas Bhumre from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar moved a calling attention motion on the issue. The latter’s concerns were echoed by Sena (UBT) MLA Varun Sardesai. Bhumre expressed grave concern over the easy availability of drugs in his constituency, stating that MD, ketamin and even synthetic drugs were being openly sold.
Similarly, Sardesai, pointed out that several densely populated slum areas in Bandra East had become hotbeds for open drug peddling. He alleged that police often hesitate to enter these congested areas. “These (Nigerian) accused often commit another minor crime to avoid deportation, which delays justice and complicates their legal status,” Sardesai said.
Fadnavis assured that a special drive will be carried out in the Behrampada, Bharat Nagar, Golibar, and Naupada areas of Bandra East. He added that talks are on with the Centre regarding SOPs for handling accused foreigners. “The Centre has informed us that in cases involving minor offences, legal withdrawal of minor charges followed by immediate deportation could be considered,” the CM said.

‘4 RDX IED Bombs Placed In Tower..’: Bombay Stock Exchange Receives Bomb Threat

Mumbai: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) received a bomb threat via email on Tuesday morning, claiming that four RDX IED bombs were planted in BSE tower, set to detonate at 3 PM. The email originated from an ID named “Comrade Pinarayi Vijayan.”
In response, the police and bomb squad swiftly arrived at the site to conduct a thorough search, finding no suspicious objects. A case has been filed at the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg Police Station against an unidentified individual under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The threat led to immediate action by BSE officials, who alerted Mumbai police. Historical context reveals that the BSE was previously targeted in a devastating terrorist attack on March 12, 1993, resulting in significant casualties and damage.
the stock market saw a rebound after four days of decline. The Sensex and Nifty indices improved due to a significant drop in retail inflation to a six-year low of 2.1% in June, aligning with the Reserve Bank of India’s comfort zone.
The recovery was additionally supported by positive signals from Wall Street, with the BSE Sensex rising by 203.95 points, reaching 82,457.41, and the NSE Nifty increasing by 68.85 points to 25,151.15. Notable gainers included Sun Pharma and Bharti Airtel, while HCL Technologies faced a decline of nearly 3% following a reported drop in net profit for the June quarter, despite raising its revenue growth guidance.

Hotel Owners Stage Silent Protest In Navi Mumbai Against Excise Duty Hike and VAT Changes

Navi Mumbai: Members of the Navi Mumbai Hotel Owners Association staged a silent protest on Monday, July 14, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk in Vashi. The protest targeted the Maharashtra Government over the recent hike in excise duty, the abolition of VAT exemptions, and several other pending issues.
In a coordinated move, over 20,000 bars across Maharashtra shut operations on July 14 as part of a statewide bandh called by the Association of Hotels and Restaurants (AHAR). The bandh is a protest against what AHAR terms the government’s “relentless and unjust” tax hikes on the hospitality sector, an industry valued at Rs 1.5 lakh crore and now, according to AHAR.
The protest follows several ignored appeals from the industry, leaving AHAR with no choice but to take what it describes as an extreme yet necessary step for survival, as reported.
AHAR is objecting to multiple policy changes, including a VAT on liquor increased from 5 per cent to 10 per cent, a 15 per cent hike in annual licence fees, and a staggering 60 per cent rise in excise duty within just one year. The bandh is a reaction to what AHAR calls a “triple tax tsunami” that has hit the industry in less than a year.
The president of the AHAR, Sudhakar Shetty, mentioned that, “The entire hospitality sector in Maharashtra is bleeding. Our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. On July 14, every bar and permit room in the state will be shut in protest.” Also added that members across Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, and Konkan have confirmed full participation.
These cumulative tax increases, paired with ongoing post-COVID recovery struggles, have made operations unviable for many businesses. AHAR has warned that these conditions could lead to widespread closures of small and mid-sized establishments, triggering job losses and a potential rise in illegal liquor smuggling from neighbouring states.
“This is not just an economic blow; it is a death blow to an industry that contributes significantly to employment and state taxes,” said Shetty. “These draconian hikes are the final nail in the coffin. From excise renewal fees to VAT and excise duty, our survival is at stake. If the government does not roll back these hikes, we fear mass closures and irreversible damage to Maharashtra’s hospitality landscape.”
