Ex-Maha home minister Anil Deshmukh gets 4 days’ ED custody

Published

on

A holiday Special Court on Tuesday remanded former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh to the custody of Enforcement Directorate till November 6 in a money-laundering case, 16 hours after he was arrested at 1.00 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Special Judge P.B. Jadhav rejected the plea by ED’s counsel, Additional Solicitor-General Anil Singh seeking 14 days’ custody, which the defence lawyers, Senior Advocate Vikram Chaudhri and advocate Aniket Nikam strongly protested.

Chaudhri said that before the Supreme Court and Bombay High Court, the ED had said that Deshmukh was only a suspect and not an accused in the case and termed the arrest ‘illegal’.

That was the reason Deshmukh voluntarily went to the ED office on November 1 and after 13 hours of questioning he was placed under arrest, he said.

The defence sought to know what fresh evidence the ED had gathered in the past four days since Friday (Oct 29) leading to the arrest especially since he had always cooperated with the agency whenever summoned.

The Bombay High Court on Friday declined Deshmukh’s plea to quash the ED summons against him, and he said that his matter was still pending before the Supreme Court.

Following an application by Deshmukh, the Special Judge Jadhav allowed home-food and medicines, and presence of a lawyer during the ED interrogation, given his advanced age of 72 and several health issues like a dislocated arm and heart problems, besides being a Covid-recovered patient, said Nikam.

The ED filed its case based on the CBI’s FIR against Deshmukh after former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh had alleged that the minister had tasked sacked cop Sachin Vaze and others to collect Rs 100 crore from Mumbai hoteliers every month.

In a video-statement prior to appearing before the ED, Deshmukh had demanded to know “where is Singh who had levelled the false allegations” and now disappeared, amid reports he may have sneaked out of India.

Following Singh’s letter in March, the ED and CBI had carried out multiple raids on Deshmukh and family, and the ED sought his 14 days custody citing ‘non-cooperation’.

Deshmukh refuted the ED charges saying that whenever he was summoned, he had replied to them, provided documents, etc and said that he would appear after the outcome of his various court appeals.

“On account of a witch-hunt campaign launched at the instance of certain vested inimical interests, some blatantly false allegations have been levelled by those persons who have absolutely no credibility, honour or pride,” said Deshmukh.

He added that “these unscrupulous persons are themselves knee-deep involved in several rackets of extortion and even murder. The principal person who held the high office of Mumbai CoP is now a wanted absconding criminal”.

Mumbai: Massive Fire Engulfs Railway Coach At Matunga Carshed, Welding Sparks Suspected

Published

Mumbai, April 7: A major fire broke out in an LHB sleeper coach at the Matunga carshed in Mumbai at around 3:10 pm, triggering an immediate response from the fire brigade. The blaze was brought under control by 4:00 pm, preventing further escalation.

Officials confirmed that nearly 70 percent of the upper portion of the coach was burnt in the incident. However, the underslung equipment remained safe. The affected coach was quickly shifted to an open area, ensuring that no other coaches or workshop infrastructure were damaged.

No injuries were reported, offering some relief amid the scare.

Preliminary findings indicate that welding work was underway near the toilet area on the CSMT side of the coach at the time of the incident. Sparks generated during the process are believed to have ignited nearby materials.

Authorities said strong winds and the non AC nature of the sleeper coach contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. The incident has raised questions about safety measures during maintenance activities, with officials expected to review protocols.

The incident comes close on the heels of another fire reported last week at an offshore installation operated by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation at Mumbai High.

The fire broke out around 5:45 pm at the SHP platform, leaving 10 personnel with minor injuries. According to ONGC, emergency teams responded swiftly and brought the situation under control. All injured individuals are stable and undergoing treatment, while operations have resumed.

While the exact cause of the offshore fire remains under investigation, the back to back incidents have once again highlighted the need for stringent safety checks across critical infrastructure.

Mumbai Shocker! Thief Steals Mobile During Jumma Namaz In Govandi Mosque, Act Caught On CCTV

Mumbai: witnessed a deeply unsettling incident in Baiganwadi, Govandi, where a young man was caught on CCTV allegedly stealing a mobile phone during Friday Jumma namaz at Noor e Illahi Masjid on Road No 8 on April 3, 2026.

The video, now widely shared across social media platforms, shows devotees immersed in prayer, completely unaware of their surroundings. In a matter of seconds, the accused quietly reaches into the pocket of a worshipper standing ahead of him, removes the phone, and walks away without drawing attention.

The brazenness of the act, carried out during a moment of faith and silence, has left residents disturbed. Many locals believe this may not be an isolated case and suspect the same individual could be linked to previous thefts in the area.

The incident has triggered concerns about safety even in places traditionally considered secure. Residents say the violation of trust within a place of worship has intensified unease.

While Mumbai continues to be known for its resilience and communal harmony, such incidents underline the need for vigilance and stronger security measures, even in spaces meant for peace.

In a separate case, a 20 year old woman was apprehended at Kandivali railway station on Monday morning after allegedly stealing a mangalsutra worth Rs 2 lakh from a fellow commuter.

The incident occurred around 8 am during peak hours, when heavy crowds move through Mumbai’s suburban railway network. According to reports circulating online, the accused targeted a commuter and attempted to flee after committing the theft.

However, alert commuters and authorities quickly intervened, chasing and detaining her within the station premises before she could escape.

Visuals from the scene show the woman being handcuffed by police, drawing attention from onlookers.

These back to back incidents have reignited concerns over safety in crowded public spaces. Daily commuters have long flagged theft and chain snatching as recurring issues, particularly during rush hours.

As investigations continue, many are calling for enhanced surveillance, stricter monitoring, and increased awareness to prevent such crimes in the future.
