‘Is It Truly Yet To Be Finalised?’ Aditya Thackeray Questions NDA Government About India-US Trade Deal

Published

on

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray on Tuesday raised questions over the Centre’s handling of the recently announced India–US trade agreement, demanding transparency and parliamentary accountability amid what he described as mixed signals from the Union government.

In a strongly worded post on X, Thackeray took aim at the sequence of events that unfolded a day after leaders from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) publicly celebrated the deal. He pointed out that the Union Commerce Minister subsequently stated that the agreement was still being worked out, triggering confusion over whether the deal had in fact been finalised.

“Is he unaware of the agreement, or is it truly yet to be finalised?” Thackeray asked, questioning the basis for what he termed a “round of self-congratulations” by the government. He further asked what exactly the public messaging and felicitation were about if key details were still under discussion.

The Sena (UBT) leader underlined the apparent contradiction between international and domestic communication on the matter. Referring to announcements made by the US administration, including statements from the President of the United States himself.

“If the entire US government ecosystem and even the President are tweeting about it, is the Union Commerce Minister of the Government of India saying it’s not finalised?” he asked, adding that clarity was urgently required.

Thackeray also flagged what he described as a departure from parliamentary convention. With Parliament currently in session, he questioned why the government had not first made a formal statement on the floor of the House. “Isn’t that the tradition?” he asked, implying that the NDA should have been briefed before celebratory messaging was pushed on social media.

Another concern raised was the lack of media engagement. Thackeray questioned why, despite holding a press briefing, the Commerce Minister did not take questions from journalists. Drawing a comparison with the United States, he remarked that even the US President engages with the media and fields questions, asking why Indian ministers could not do the same on a deal of such significance.

“All we need is clarity on a very important trade deal with a very important partner country,” Thackeray said, stressing that the issue went beyond political point-scoring and directly affected national economic interests.

The former Maharashtra minister closed his remarks by pointing out a striking irony. He noted that Indian citizens seem to be getting most of their detailed information about the agreement from American officials’ posts and announcements. In contrast, he claimed the Indian government has provided little substance, offering mostly “self-congratulatory” statements instead.

The tweet adds to the growing political debate around the India–US trade agreement, with the opposition demanding transparency, clear communication and adherence to parliamentary norms as discussions around the deal continue.

MLA Abu Asim Azmi demands Interior Minister to allow Muharram sermons and gatherings until 9pm

Mumbai: In view of the importance of the holy days of Muharram, the time of public religious speeches, sermons and gatherings held during this period should be extended from 10 am to 12 pm, MLA Abu Asim Azmi has sent a memorandum to the state Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, making this strong demand.

MLA Azmi has said in his letter that public speeches, sermons and gatherings are organized in different areas at night during Muharram, in which a large number of devotees participate. Currently, Maghrib prayers are offered at around 7 pm, after which a lot of time is spent until the Isha prayers are completed. The police administration is currently allowing only up to 10 pm, due to which very little time is required for the actual program after the prayers. Due to this shortage of time, there is anxiety among Muslims and they are not able to fully benefit from these religious speeches.

In view of this situation, with full respect for law and order, this time should be extended till 12 midnight for the scheduled dates of Muharram. MLA Abu Asim Azmi has demanded that the Home Minister himself intervene in the matter and immediately issue positive orders to the police administration. Copies of this memorandum have also been sent to the Chief Minister and Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Devin Bharti for necessary action.

KEM Hospital student Sejal Pawar submits written apology after viral remarks on cadavers

Published

Mumbai, June 12: Sejal Pawar, a medical student at Mumbai’s King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, has submitted a written apology to the institution after a video of her making controversial remarks about cadavers went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism and legal action.

Hospital sources said senior doctors were deeply upset by Pawar’s comments, particularly because cadavers are voluntarily donated for medical education and are regarded with the utmost respect by the medical fraternity.

According to hospital authorities, Pawar has not been suspended, and no disciplinary action, such as suspension, has been taken against her so far. However, officials indicated that while the institution does not intend to be excessively harsh, it will deal with the matter seriously.

The senior doctors of the hospital have told her that her statement on social media has hurt them a lot, sources said, adding that the issue concerns the dignity accorded to body donors who make medical education possible.

Pawar, who hails from Pune, came under intense scrutiny after a video clip from a public programme went viral online. In the clip, she allegedly made objectionable remarks related to the private parts of cadavers while discussing a sensitive medical education topic in a light-hearted manner.

The controversy prompted strong backlash on social media and led to the registration of an FIR against her. Maharashtra Cyber Police has also initiated action in the matter.

Taking cognisance of the incident, KEM Hospital ordered an internal inquiry and constituted a committee to examine the issue. The hospital administration directed the panel to submit its report at the earliest.

Amid mounting criticism and institutional scrutiny, earlier, Pawar issued a public apology through a detailed post on Instagram.

“Recently, a video clip of mine has gone viral on social media. After watching the video again, I realised how much my words hurt people’s sentiments,” she said in a video post.

She acknowledged that the subject she spoke about was highly sensitive and said she never intended to offend anyone.

“I am not going to justify it, never going to take the wrong side. I wanted to come here and make a public apology. I take full responsibility for my mistake,” she said.

Calling the episode a major learning experience, Pawar added that as a student, she had learned an important lesson and would ensure that such an incident is never repeated in the future.

The hospital’s inquiry report is awaited, while authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the viral video and its impact on public sentiment and medical ethics.
