BJP leader, 15 others booked for assaulting government official in Rajkot
An official of the theft prevention team of Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (PGVCL) has alleged that he was assaulted by a mob led by BJP leader Dhirubhai Talpada at Movia village in Rajkot district.
The injured official has been admitted to a private hospital for treatment.
Narrating the entire episode, PGVCL’s Junagadh range Deputy Engineer H.M. Parmar said that the PGVCL has launched a drive to check power theft, and as part of this exercise, a team lead by Deputy Engineer Purohit visited Movia village on Wednesday morning.
During the drive, the team detected power theft at the residence and industrial unit of BJP leader Dhirubhai Talpada.
When Talpada learnt about PGVCL’s action, he rushed to the plant with a mob of around 40 people and attacked the team. Eight to 10 persons, including Talpada, reportedly slapped Purohit multiple times. He was also beaten with a stick and suffered injuries on his face and head.
A complaint has been lodged with the Paddhari police station against the BJP leader and 15 others.
One junior official captured the incident on his cellphone, but he was forced by the mob to delete the video. Now the mobile will be sent to the cyber security team to retrieve the video.
Refuting the PGVCL official’s allegation, Talpada alleged that the team had entered his house when women were alone at home. The officials also misbehaved with the women, Talpada alleged, adding that if the CCTV footages are checked, nothing wrong will be found.

Irresponsible to blame Iran while failing to hold aggressors accountable, says Tehran on UN stance

Tehran, July 13: Iran has condemned the statement by the United Nations on the military escalations in the region, framing recent Iranian strikes on US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait as lawful self-defence rather than aggression, citing US-Israel attacks starting February 28 that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
Tehran accused the US of using Gulf states’ territories as launchpads, asking the UN to urge those countries to halt support and hold aggressors accountable under international law.
Iranian Foreign Minister Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei also insisted on using the term “Persian Gulf” per longstanding UN directives from 1994 and 1999.
In a post on X, Baqaei said, “This is not a ‘military confrontation’. It is the continuation of a blatant and unprovoked act of aggression initiated on 28 February by the United States and Israel. Iran does not ‘attack’. Iran’s strikes on US military bases and assets stationed in the southern Persian Gulf constitute a legitimate and lawful exercise of its inherent right to self-defence under international law.”
“You should urge the countries in question to immediately cease allowing the United States to use their territories as launchpads for aggression against Iran. It is far from responsible to blame Iran for defending its sovereignty while failing to hold the aggressors accountable for their egregious violation of international law,” he said.
Citing the UN directives of 1994 and 1999, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, “BTW, it is ‘Persian Gulf’; please be loyal to the UN directives (notably on 18 August 1994, and 14 May 1999) mandating the use of the full term ‘Persian Gulf’ in all UN texts.”
This came as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalation and renewed military confrontations in the Gulf region, including the “Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the attacks by the United States on Iran, and the attacks by Iran on targets in the neighbouring countries”.
The UN chief “calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalatory action and take immediate steps to de-escalate,” his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement.
“These attacks must all stop,” the statement said, adding, “The Secretary-General urges Iran and the United States to urgently resume negotiations and to address outstanding issues through diplomacy.”

Delhi cop shoots wife dead in Kalyanpuri after marital dispute

New Delhi, July 13: A Delhi Police constable allegedly shot his wife dead in East Delhi’s Kalyanpuri area following a domestic dispute, police said on Monday.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the couple had been experiencing frequent marital discord for some time and were often involved in arguments over personal issues.
According to the police, the incident took place after another altercation broke out between the couple on Sunday.
The officials said the husband and wife had left their residence together on a scooter, but the argument reportedly continued while they were travelling.
During the course of the investigation, police recovered CCTV footage that allegedly captured the couple stopping their scooter on the roadside before stepping off the vehicle.
The footage is said to show them engaging in a heated argument moments before the shooting took place.
According to sources, the CCTV footage shows the constable and his wife stopping their scooter and stepping off the vehicle. They were seen arguing when the constable took out his service pistol and shot his wife.
The investigators said that the accused allegedly fled the spot immediately after the incident. Police teams have since launched a search operation to trace him and are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding area as well as along the possible escape routes to reconstruct his movements and establish the exact sequence of events.
The accused constable was posted with the Anti-Theft Squad of the East district at the time of the incident.
As part of the investigation, police are also questioning family members and other individuals known to the couple to understand the circumstances that allegedly led to the fatal shooting.
Police have registered a case in connection with the incident and said further investigation is currently underway.

Five killed, 42 injured as two buses collide in TN’s Madurai

Chennai, July 13: Five people were killed and 42 others, including several children, were injured after a private omni bus collided head-on with a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus near Kottampatti in Madurai district during the early hours of Monday, police said.
The accident occurred on the four-lane national highway near Vandinagar, close to Kottampatti, when the private omni bus, which was travelling from Chennai to Marthandam, allegedly went out of control and crossed the central median into the opposite carriageway. It then rammed into an oncoming TNSTC bus with great force, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.
The impact of the collision was severe. The private bus veered off the highway after the crash and smashed into a roadside passenger shelter. Its front portion was completely crushed, trapping several passengers inside.
The TNSTC bus overturned due to the force of the impact, leaving passengers stranded and injured.
Police, fire and rescue personnel, along with local residents, rushed to the accident site and launched an intensive rescue operation.
Rescue teams used specialised equipment to extricate passengers trapped inside the mangled buses before shifting the injured to waiting ambulances.
Officials said five people — four men and one woman — died on the spot due to the severity of their injuries.
Their identities are yet to be officially confirmed.
Forty-two others, including children, sustained injuries of varying degrees and were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, where they are undergoing treatment. Hospital authorities said some of the injured remain in critical condition and are under close medical observation.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the private omni bus may have lost control of the vehicle moments before the collision. However, police said the exact cause of the accident would be established only after a detailed investigation, including an examination of the vehicles and statements from survivors and witnesses.
The accident triggered panic among motorists and residents in the area, while traffic on the busy highway was disrupted for several hours.
Police diverted vehicles through alternate routes as cranes were deployed to remove the damaged buses and clear the roadway.
The Kottampatti police have registered a case and launched a comprehensive investigation into the fatal accident. Authorities are also examining whether speeding, driver fatigue or mechanical failure contributed to the tragedy.
