West Bengal CM shamed victim and defended accused: BJP

The BJP has criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for giving love angle twist to rape and murder of a minor girl at Hanskhali in Nadia district.
The BJP said that the chief minister shamed the victim and defended the accused.
West Bengal BJP co-incharge Amit Malviya mentioned that sexual intercourse with a minor is rape and is a crime. “Mamata Banerjee’s crass comment on the rape and murder of 14-year-old girl in Hanskhali is not just abhorrent but also steeped in gross illegality. Sexual intercourse with a minor is rape. It is a crime. Her murder is a crime. Bengal CM shamed the victim and defended the accused,” Malviya tweeted.
In an earlier tweet, he said: “Shocking statement by Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, who trivialises the brutal rape and murder of a 14 year old girl in Nadia’s Hanskhali. She questions the victim and asks if it was a love affair or a case of unplanned pregnancy gone awry! Because the accused is TMC leader’s son.”
The controversy over the rape of a minor girl, who died later, at Hanskhali in Nadia district of West Bengal last week took a more debatable turn on Monday afternoon after the chief minister gave a love-angle twist to the incident.
Speaking at the inauguration of the revamped Milan Mela, a permanent fair ground opposite the Science City at the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in Kolkata on Monday afternoon, the chief minister referred to the minor’s rape in connection with which Brajagopal Goyal, son of a local panchayat member, Samar Goyal, was arrested on Sunday.
“What has happened is not right. I condemn it. The police have arrested the accused. But the opposition parties and a section of the media are trying to give a political twist to the entire event. I have received the news that there was a love affair between the accused and the victim. So why come to a conclusion before the investigation is completed,” the chief minister had said.

Bengal govt challenges Calcutta HC’s twin orders in minor rape-murder case

The West Bengal government on Friday challenged the twin orders of a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court in connection to the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kaliganj, North Dinajpur district.
The two orders by the High Court’s single-judge bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha have been challenged at the division bench headed by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and comprising Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya.
The first order pertains to the formation of a special investigation team to probe the case, while the second is related to Justice Mantha seeking a report from the state’s Home Department on the police allegedly refusing to cooperate with the SIT.
Despite a petition was filed at the High Court demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in the matter, Justice Mantha constituted the SIT comprising the-then Special Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Damayanti Sen, retired IG Pankaj Dutta, and retired Joint Director of CBI, Upen Biswas.
Justice Mantha and specifically directed the state police to fully cooperate with the SIT.
Sen has however, been transferred from her current posting to a lesser significant post of additional director general (training) of state police.
Justice Mantha’s bench recently received complaints against the state police for not cooperating with the SIT.
Taking strong exceptions, Justice Mantha on Thursday sought a report from the Home Department within seven days.
The rape and murder case took place in April.

‘Abaya’ controversy evokes strong criticism in Kashmir

The controversy triggered by the refusal of a college principal to allow students inside the college wearing an ‘Abaya’ has evoked strong criticism in Kashmir.
Abaya is an Islamic dress worn as a loose gown by a woman.
The students appearing for the common entrance test for colleges conducted by the NTA were initially refused entry into the college by the principal at one of the exam centres in Srinagar city as the girl candidates were wearing Abaya.
Better sense prevailed on the principal who later allowed the students to take their test while wearing the same dress.
Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti told reporters, “They are trying to repeat what was done in Karnataka. Abaya is an Islamic dress and we will not accept any dictate on this. They cannot put pressure on us as to what we should wear or not wear. Whatever a person wants to wear, he/she has the freedom to wear it.”
National Conference (NC) spokesman, Tanvir Sadiq told reporters that the act of the principal is condemnable as anybody should be allowed to wear the dress of his/her choice.
“If a woman wears Abaya, that is fine and if she does not want to wear it, that is her decision and there is nothing objectionable about it,” Sadiq said.
