Uddhav Sena slams Shinde MP Milind Deora over call to impose curbs on protests in South Mumbai

Published

on

Mumbai, Sep 5: The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) on Friday slammed Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MP Milind Deora and demanded his expulsion from the party for urging Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to draft a standard operating procedure to prevent Mumbai from being paralysed during protests.

After the five-day protest by pro-Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil paralysed the city, Deora wrote to Fadnavis seeking a ban on protests in, or their relocation away from, the city’s high-security and key operational zones, a move that angered the Uddhav Sena camp, drawing sharp criticism.

In a hard-hitting editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamana, the Uddhav Sena said, “The first right over Mumbai belongs to the Marathi people. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s party answers to Amit Shah. Therefore, the Shinde camp MP does not acknowledge the Marathi people’s claim over Mumbai. The city did not stop even after the terrible bomb blasts; that is Mumbai’s character. It will not stop because of agitation either, but industrialists aligned with Modi and Shah are trying to swallow Mumbai, which is a serious concern. Mumbai may seem to belong to the affluent, but it is, above all, the capital of Maharashtra.”

The Uddhav Sena has demanded that Shinde immediately expel Deora, accusing him of showing contempt for Marathi identity and opposing both the Maratha community’s movement and the gathering of Marathi people in Mumbai.

“The struggle for a united Maharashtra first caught fire in South Mumbai. From there began the marches of the Marathi people. Most of the 106 martyrs fell in police firing in this very part of the city, where their memorial now stands. It was also from South Mumbai that Mahatma Gandhi gave the call of ‘Quit India’ to the British. The sweat and blood of Marathi workers and mill labourers built the wealth that raised palaces for the rich in this area. Yet Shinde Sena MP Deora now says Marathi people should not be allowed to protest in South Mumbai. He further argues that the country’s economic capital must not be halted by any agitation,” the editorial stated.

Uddhav Sena says that young men and women from villages across Maharashtra came to Mumbai to join Jarange-Patil’s protest for Maratha reservation. For four to five days, they walked the city streets and gathered along the seafront, eating the chutney and bread they had carried from home while sitting by the roadside. The rich from South Mumbai have since raised objections, and their representative, Deora, has written to the Chief Minister registering his protest against the agitation.

“Deora struck the note that no further agitation should be allowed around the Mantralaya in South Mumbai. As an MP from the Shinde group backed by Amit Shah, he has opposed the Marathi people’s protest in South Mumbai in this manner,” claimed the Thackeray camp.

The Uddhav camp rejected Deora’s claim that such protests are barred in every major capital, calling the statement completely objectionable.

“Americans took to the streets against President Trump’s rule, with demonstrations held in more than 1,600 locations. Chicago, a major commercial centre, became the main hub of the protest. People also marched in Atlanta, St. Louis, California, Maryland, New York, and Washington. President Trump’s supporters even resorted to violence inside the Capitol Hill building, long seen as a symbol of American democracy. Across Europe as well, protests are a common feature in national capitals. The right to protest in a capital city is a basic entitlement granted to citizens in a democracy,” the editorial said.

“Saying that Marathi people should not protest in Mumbai, particularly in South Mumbai where the wealthy reside, is an injustice to all Marathi brothers,” it said.

New Delhi, Oct 25: India will continue to engage constructively with the United Nations (UN) to advance peace, sustainable development and the voice of the Global South, according to Union Minister Manohar Lal.

In his address at the 80th United Nations Day celebrations as the chief guest at an event here, the minister highlighted the UN’s remarkable contributions over the past eight decades in preventing conflicts, promoting international law, and supporting the development of nations left behind.

Referring to the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future” — a concept rooted in India’s G20 Presidency — Manohar Lal emphasised the importance of shared global responsibility and cooperation to address interconnected challenges.

The minister reaffirmed India’s deep partnership with the UN, citing initiatives such as the India-UN Development Partnership Fund and the India-UN Global Capacity Building Initiative as examples of India’s action-oriented approach and commitment to South–South cooperation.

Paying tribute to Indian peacekeepers who made the supreme sacrifice in UN missions, he reiterated India’s unwavering stand against terrorism and its call for reforms in the UN, particularly the expansion of the UN Security Council to make it more inclusive and representative.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that ‘all is not well’ within the United Nations and that its decisions do not address global priorities. He pointed out how a UN Security Council member protected the terror group that claimed responsibility for the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

While launching a postage stamp to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations in New Delhi, EAM Jaishankar recalled the sacrifices of Indian UN peacekeepers and spoke about the recently hosted Chiefs of Army Staff conclave in the national capital, which witnessed participation from 30 troop-contributing countries.

He further said, “That said, we must also recognise that all is not well with the United Nations. Its decision-making neither reflects its membership nor addresses global priorities. Its debates have become increasingly polarised and its working visibly gridlocked.”

Medical Fraternity Outraged Over Death Of Doctor; BMC MARD, FAIMA Demand Justice And Systemic Reforms

Published

Mumbai: The tragic death of Dr. Sampada Mundhe, a young government medical officer posted at the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) in Phaltan, Satara district, has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra’s medical community.

Expressing deep anguish, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (BMC MARD) and the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) have strongly condemned the incident, calling for immediate justice, accountability, and urgent reforms to safeguard the mental health and working conditions of doctors.

According to reports, Dr. Mundhe had been under severe mental distress linked to a departmental inquiry and had repeatedly complained to her superiors about harassment and humiliation. Her alleged suicide note reportedly names two police officials and mentions both physical assault and mental harassment.

Despite her repeated appeals for help, no adequate measures were taken to ensure her safety, exposing glaring lapses in institutional oversight and empathy.

Both BMC MARD and FAIMA said the incident highlights the immense pressures and psychological burdens faced by doctors, particularly those serving in peripheral and sub-district hospitals where professional isolation, administrative indifference, and lack of support often compound mental distress.

The organisations expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a young and dedicated doctor who, despite her commitment to public service, was left without institutional protection.

Both associations have urged the Government of Maharashtra to immediately suspend the police officials named in the suicide note and initiate a fair, transparent, and time-bound judicial probe into all aspects of the case. They have also sought accountability from the health department and administrative officers who ignored Dr. Mundhe’s repeated complaints and warning signs.

Further, they have called for comprehensive reforms, including the creation of a robust grievance redressal mechanism and a state-level mental health support system for doctors and healthcare workers facing administrative or disciplinary stress. They also demanded psychological, financial, and legal support for Dr. Mundhe’s family.

“This is not an isolated case—it reflects the deep-rooted neglect of doctors’ mental health and workplace well-being. Those who dedicate their lives to public service deserve dignity, empathy, and protection, not despair,” said Dr Akshay Dongardive, President, FAIMA.

Navi Mumbai: Congress Urges Suspension Of Politically-Motivated Civic Projects Ahead Of Elections

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai District Congress has urged the municipal administration to suspend all development works allegedly sanctioned with political motives ahead of the forthcoming civic elections.

District Congress spokesperson Ravindra Sawant submitted a written representation to Municipal Commissioner Kailash Shinde, demanding that the ongoing projects worth Rs 600 to Rs 650 crore be put on hold until after the elections.

Sawant alleged that the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has approved several projects across wards under the influence of former corporators, despite the civic body being under administrative rule for the past few years.

“The administrator has been effectively addressing public needs and civic issues. Launching these works now appears aimed at helping former corporators take credit and secure financial gains,” he stated.

Describing the move as a betrayal of democratic values, Sawant claimed the projects were intended to influence voters ahead of the polls. He urged that all politically motivated development works be immediately suspended and resumed only after the elections under the supervision of duly elected representatives.
