‘The Kerala Story’ has been creating waves across the country due to its controversial content and it has also resulted in a massive political upheaval.

Directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, ‘The Kerala Story’ has been the talk of the town ever since the trailer released.

The film is facing severe opposition from a section of the society and it has even been banned in West Bengal, but the protests seem to only work in the film’s favour and its publicity.

‘The Kerala Story’ box office collection

As politicians debate over ‘The Kerala Story’ and the supposed truth that it allegedly shows, the film is silently raking in monies at the ticket windows.

As per trade analyst Taran Adarsh, ‘The Kerala Story’ has zoomed past the Rs 50 crore mark within just five days.

The film released on May 5 and it has been witnessing a steady growth. It opened with Rs 8.03 crore, followed by Rs 11.22 crore on Saturday, Rs 16.40 crore on Sunday, and Rs 10.07 crore on Monday. On Tuesday, it surprisingly made more than Monday with Rs 11.14.

With this, the total box office collection of ‘The Kerala Story’ now stands at Rs 56.86 crore.

If the trend continues, then nothing will be able to stop ‘The Kerala Story’ from becoming a phenomenon like ‘The Kashmir Files’ which released in 2022 and was one of the biggest film of the year.

‘The Kerala Story’ controversies

‘The Kerala Story’ is said to tell the true story of three Kerala women who were tricked and trafficked to Iraq and Syria to join the ISIS by means of love jihad.

It stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in lead roles.

Protests have erupted in several parts of the country to stop the screening of the film. The West Bengal government has officially banned the film in the state, while in Tamil Nadu, theatre owners have refused to screen it citing law and order scares.

On the other hand, ‘The Kerala Story’ has been made tax-free in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to encourage people to watch it.

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli has landed in trouble after his recent remarks on Lord Hanuman during the launch event of his upcoming film Varanasi in Hyderabad on Saturday (November 15) sparked a major controversy. Soon after the launch, an FIR was registered against the acclaimed director for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

On Tuesday, November 18, the Saroornagar police in Hyderabad received a complaint from the Vanara Sena organisation, alleging that Rajamouli had hurt Hindu sentiments by saying, “I don’t believe in God Hanuman.”

The police added how they are currently investigating the matter.

As of now, SS Rajamouli has not reacted to the controversy.

At the event that was held at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, technical glitches prevented the teaser from being played. An emotional Rajamouli apologised to the 50,000-strong crowd, saying he felt as though he had been let down by Lord Hanuman.

“When my father talked about Hanuman and suggested relying on his blessings for success, I got so angry,” he said. The filmmaker also clarified that he does not believe in God.

He also mentioned that his wife, Rama, was a great devotee of Hanuman. “My wife has a great devotion to Lord Hanuman. She talks to Him like He’s her friend. I even got angry with her for a while. Let’s see,” said the director.

Soon after Rajamouli’s statement went viral on social media, netizens slammed him, with many expressing surprise, noting that his blockbuster films, including Baahubali and RRR, draw heavily from Hindu epics and mythology.

Varanasi stars Priyanka Chopra, Mahesh Babu, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, and is slated for release in 2027.
