Kalyan Police Arrest Seven For Alleged Gang-Rape Of Minor; Eighth Accused Absconding

The Kalyan police have arrested seven individuals for allegedly gang-raping a 17-year-old girl on multiple occasions in Kalyan.

According to the police, the incident began in March this year when the victim received a friend request on Instagram from one of the accused, who is a relative. She accepted the request and began conversing with him, including over regular calls. Later, the accused introduced her to another man, and she also began communicating with him. Eventually, a physical relationship was established between them.

The accused later recorded intimate moments with the girl and shared the video with his friends. Subsequently, the other six accused sexually assaulted her after threatening to make the video viral. Following this, the girl became pregnant and later suffered a miscarriage.

The incident came to light when a relative informed the victim’s father about an intimate video of his daughter that had gone viral on social media. Thereafter, the father along with the victim approached the Mahatma Phule Police Station on Monday and filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was lodged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (formerly the Indian Penal Code), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Information Technology Act.

Baliaram Pardeshi, Senior Police Inspector from Mahatma Phule Police Station, said, “So far, seven accused have been arrested and produced in court, where they were remanded to police custody until September 30. We have formed a team to trace the one absconding accused.”

Mumbai Weather Update: Light Showers Expected Today Ahead Of Fresh Spell Of Heavy Rain; Orange Alert Issued For September 27

Mumbai: Mumbai woke up to light showers on Wednesday morning, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting light to moderate rainfall for the city over the next two days. While Wednesday and Thursday are expected to remain relatively calm with cloudy skies, meteorologists have cautioned that the intensity of rainfall will rise as the week progresses.

According to IMD, Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad will witness a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall towards the weekend. An orange alert has been issued for Saturday, September 27, warning of intense showers and thunderstorms at isolated locations. The city’s maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 30 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively, during this period.

The forecast for Wednesday and Thursday suggests moderate showers with no major warnings, but residents have been advised to remain alert for changing weather patterns. On Saturday, heavy rainfall is again likely under generally cloudy skies, raising concerns of waterlogging and traffic disruptions in low-lying areas. The IMD has also sounded caution for September 28, predicting a rain-soaked weekend.

Meanwhile, central Maharashtra has already been grappling with the effects of relentless rain. In Latur district, a farmer tragically died of electrocution due to waterlogging in his field, while over 40 roads and bridges were submerged following torrential downpours earlier this week. Officials confirmed that 25 people from vulnerable areas were evacuated to safety.

Rainfall figures highlight the severity of the situation in Latur. On Monday, the district recorded an average of 35.3 mm rain, while on Tuesday, Latur tehsil alone reported 61.5 mm, the highest in the district. So far in September, the district has received 224.5 mm rainfall, well above the expected average of 138.8 mm. Since June 1, cumulative rainfall has reached 783 mm, which is 118 percent of the season’s normal (663.8 mm).

The heavy showers left major parts of the district cut off, as more than 40 roads and bridges across Ausa, Nilanga, Chakur, Ahmedpur, and Udgir tehsils were submerged. Vehicular traffic was forced to a halt and several state transport bus services were suspended as bridges went underwater.

Two men have allegedly cheated a 39-year-old woman in Maharashtra’s Palghar district of her valuables of Rs 17 lakh under the guise of keeping them safe, police said on Tuesday.

The woman’s husband is currently lodged at the Taloja Jail in neighbouring Navi Mumbai in connection with a case registered in Mumbai.

Two of his acquaintances had approached the woman, a resident of Virar in Palghar, under the pretext of helping her.

The accused, hailing from Mira Road in neighbouring Thane district, allegedly created fear by telling her that a police raid was imminent at her residence.

Under the guise of keeping her valuables safe, they took away her gold ornaments, two mobile phones and a car, collectively valued at Rs 17.03 lakh, over the last one month, an official from Virar police station said.

They also took away the woman’s ATM cards, he said.

Based on her complaint, the police registered an FIR against the two men on Sunday under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and were searching for them, the official said.
