‘Politics of revenge’, says Congress on ED summons to Gandhis

The Congress has termed the ED summons to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case as “politics of revenge”.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Congress leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala and Abbishek Manu Singhvi said: “This is a politics of vendetta and revenge by the BJP to target opposition leaders as they have done to other opponents in the country.”

The Congress leaders said that there is no case made out of it and its only intention is “malafide”.

As there is no money involved in the case, the Congress sources say that the case was closed in 2015.

Congress General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “National Herald newspaper was started in 1942. At that time the British tried to close it, today Modi government is also doing the same thing as the Britishers did. Now the ED is being used for this purpose. The Enforcement Directorate has given notice to our president Sonia Gandhi and former president Rahul Gandhi.”

The ED on Wednesday summoned Sonia Gandhi and her son and MP Rahul Gandhi to join the investigation in money laundering case relating to the National Herald. Both will have to appear before the probe agency to record their statements on June 8.

The case has been lodged against various Congress leaders including Gandhis for allegedly misappropriating National Herald fund.

New Delhi: As the Delhi Assembly polls approach, allegations and counter-allegations from political parties in the Union Territory have intensified. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, in a social media post, made a sensational claim stating that the Delhi Police had reached Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Delhi to conduct a raid.

Attacking the BJP over the alleged incident, she said, “The BJP people are openly distributing money, shoes, and blankets in broad daylight—that doesn’t get noticed. Instead, they rush to raid the residence of an elected Chief Minister.”

“Wow, BJP! The people of Delhi will give their answer on the 5th (election day)!” she added.

Atishi’s post claiming a raid at Bhagwant Mann’s residence comes amid reports of massive security deployment outside Kapurthala House, the official residence of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann in Delhi.

Shortly after Atishi’s post, Returning Officer OP Pandey told media outside Mann’s residence, “We have got a complaint about money distribution. We have to dispose of the complaint in 100 minutes. Our FST had come here which was not allowed to enter. I have come here to request them to let us enter along with a cameraperson. The complaint of money distribution was received on the cVIGIL app.”

Notably, the police yesterday seized a large amount of cash and liquor have been seized from a car with a “Punjab government” sticker in Delhi. According to reports, AAP pamphlets were also found in the car.

Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit stated, “I wrote a letter to the LG about 25 days ago, informing him about Punjab-registered vehicles and Punjab Police bringing large amounts of money into Delhi. Today, that claim has been proven true. There is also information that Punjab Bhawan is being used as an office for the AAP. The police should raid Punjab Bhawan and investigate what is hidden inside its rooms.”

Don’t entertain hate-filled demands of burqa ban, SP MLA Rais Shaikh writes CM and Dy CMs, Edu Minister

Mumbai: A day after BJP Minister Nitesh Rane demanded a ban on the burqa in schools during exams, Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Rais Shaikh on Thursday wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, urging them not to entertain such regressive demands, which target only the Muslim community and could deprive Muslim students of their education.

In his letter to Fadnavis, Shinde, Pawar and Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse, Shaikh stated that for Muslims, wearing the burqa or headscarf is an act of worship. “The Preamble to the Constitution guarantees an individual’s liberty of faith and worship. Article 15 of the Constitution prohibits discrimination based on religion,” said Rais Shaikh, SP MLA.

Shaikh further argued that the demand to ban the burqa or headscarf in schools under the guise of exam regulations is nothing but an interference with religion. “This demand is unconstitutional and will not withstand any legal scrutiny. It targets the Muslim community at large, aiming to deprive minority students of their education. Entertaining such demands would only increase polarisation in the education sector,” Shaikh added.

Highlighting the government’s initiatives such as Ladki Bahin, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, and women empowerment, Shaikh said, “While the government launches multiple initiatives to empower women, it now needs to walk the talk and not bow down to such hate-filled demands. This is an attempt to create an atmosphere of hate and fear.”

Shaikh further urged students and their parents not to panic and to focus on their studies for the upcoming exams. “This government will be responsible for jeopardising the careers of millions of students if it gives credence to such hate-filled demands,” he added.
