Omicron spread: Weekend restrictions clamped in Mumbai

Published

The Mumbai Police has clamped prohibitory orders under Sec 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) banning the assembly of five or more, protests, marches or rallies by people or vehicles till Sunday night, officials said here on Saturday.

The orders, which came into effect from midnight (Friday-Saturday), were issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), and shall be in force till midnight (Sunday-Monday).

“The order has been issued to prevent danger to human life from Omicron, new variant of Covid-19, as well as a threat to the law and order situation against the backdrop of the violence that took place in Amravati, Malegaon (Nashik) and Nanded,” said the notification.

Violators shall attract action under Indian Penal Code Sec. 188 and other legal provisions, it added.

The prohibitory orders are likely to restrict the movement of the “Tiranga Rally” with over 300 buses and other vehicles starting from different parts of the state to Mumbai, organised on Saturday by the All India Majlis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

Led by AIMIM MP Syed Imtiaz Jaleel, the vehicle rally to Mumbai will press for the pending demands of the Muslim community including reservations and other issues, with participants likely to reach here from Pune, Nashik, Beed, Jalna, Nanded, Wardha, Parbhani, Latur, Osmanabad and other places.

However, the Mumbai Police has made it clear it will not permit the rally inside the Country’s financial capital in view of the restrictions imposed here and the Omicron concerns.

With seven new patients detected on Friday, the number of Omicron cases has shot up to 17 in Maharashtra, or nearly half the known cases in the country.

Of these seven, three were found positive in Mumbai, all males, aged 25, 37 and 48, with a recent travel history to the United Kingdom, South Africa and Tanzania.

The four new patients, including a three-and-half-year-old child, in Pune, are the close contacts of the Indian-origin Nigerian woman who was detected Omicron positive last Sunday.

Mumbai: The BJP had held a rally by blocking the road in the limits of Mumbai’s Worli police station against the rejection of the Women’s Bill in Parliament, on which the police have claimed to have registered a case. This case has been registered against the organizer, while the rally was allowed, but the police have registered a case for jamming the road for 20 minutes and causing traffic disruption. It should be noted that a BJP rally was held in Mumbai, to which a woman passenger objected and said that instead of blocking the road, a rally should be held in the field. This video went viral on social media, after which the police have registered a case against the organizer and are investigating the matter further. Mumbai Police Commissioner Devin Bharti has confirmed this. The police have registered this case for violating the permit. The police said that the conditions on which the permission was given were violated, so a case has been registered under Section 138. The police have registered a case of occupying the road and holding traffic hostage. Further investigation is also underway in this matter. The police said that the rally had caused disruption to the traffic system and this action was taken after that.

Mumbai, April 22: The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a major anti-encroachment drive across Kamothe and New Panvel over two days, targeting illegal stalls, nurseries, hawkers, and roadside vendors.

Several structures were demolished and goods, including gas cylinders, stoves, and vending materials, were seized. The drive was conducted by the ‘C’ Ward Committee in Kamothe on April 21 and 22.

In Sector 19, unauthorised stalls near Maruti Sweets and Chetak Sweets were removed, with officials seizing cooking equipment and other materials. At the MNR School junction in Sector 7, illegal fruit vendors were evicted, while hawkers outside Kamothe police station were also removed.

On Wednesday, under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner and Ward Officer Dr Rupali Mane and Ward Superintendent Dashrath Bhandari, action was extended to Sector 19, Sector 25, Sector 21, Sector 34, the Akshar Building area, and Khandeshwar railway station premises. Unauthorised nurseries operating without permits were demolished at several of these locations.

Two nurseries, along with makeshift structures of scrap and bicycle vendors, were cleared in Sector 21, while an illegal handcart was removed from Sector 34.

Action was also taken against an unauthorised coconut vendor near Neelkanth Sweets. Vendors operating near Khandeshwar station were similarly removed, and their goods confiscated.

In a parallel operation, the ‘D’ Ward Committee conducted an anti-encroachment drive in New Panvel on April 21. Unauthorised vegetable and fruit vendors in Sector 3 were removed, while illegal chicken sellers in Sector 2 and near Shiva Complex also faced action.

Officials seized gas cylinders and counters from vendors near Brijwasi Bikaner Sweets and cleared footpaths of encroachments. At Vichumbe Road, vegetables such as onions and potatoes confiscated from vendors were deposited in the municipal godown.

Civic officials said the crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to keep public spaces free of encroachments and warned that similar drives will continue in the coming days.

Mumbai: Raees Sheikh demands Devendra Fadnavis to scrap online registration requirement for power loom electricity concession

Published

Mumbai: The textile industry is in trouble due to the war in West Asia, rising transportation costs, partial lockdown due to LPG crisis and unemployment of workers. In this, the Marketing and Textile Department has made online registration mandatory for power loom electricity subsidy. As a result, there is a fear that this major industry of the state will come to a standstill and the condition of online registration should be withdrawn, demanded Samajwadi Party MLA from Bhiwandi East Raees Sheikh.

MLA Raees Sheikh has written a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Textile Minister Sanjay Sawkre in this regard. Speaking about this, MLA Raees Sheikh said that the continuous changes in Trump tariff, closure of the Strait of Hormuz, rising prices of raw materials and yarns, as well as the state government’s policy against the textile industry, especially the uncertainty about electricity prices, are all reasons why the textile industry in the state is in crisis.

There are 9.48 lakh power looms in the state. The ‘micro-scale power loom’ sector, which provides the largest number of jobs after agriculture, is in a serious crisis. There is a threat of huge loss in production and large-scale unemployment. Often, a power loom is operated by one person and owned by another. In some places, power looms are on rent while old power looms are often in use. Therefore, there are practical limitations to online registration. All the information required for online registration of power looms is with ‘Mahavataran and Toronto Company’ with direct verification. It is a contradiction to actually affect the industry sector while the government’s policy is ‘ease of doing business’. April 26 is the last date for online registration. This has resulted in an atmosphere of fear among power loom traders in Bhiwandi, Malegaon and Achal Karanji. Therefore, MLA Raees Sheikh has demanded that the proposal for online registration for power loom electricity subsidy be immediately canceled and the current system of meter-based electricity subsidy be maintained.
