No lockdown in Bengal for now, says Mamata

Published

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said there will be no lockdown-like situation in the state for now.

“I would like to tell you that there will not be any lockdown in the state right now. During Covid, everything was stopped and it led to a situation where the common people were the worst sufferer. The government doesn’t want to walk on the same path again,” the chief minister said.

She, however, said the government is carefully considering every possible situation and keeping a close watch on the developments.

“There was absolutely no scare of the virus for the last six-eight months and so all the hospitals and safe houses were closed in many places. We will take the decision after carefully considering every possible situation,” the chief minister added.

Expressing her concern over the people who are coming from Britain, she said: “People who are coming from Britain are tested Omicron positive. They are getting irritated in the testing process but they should cooperate with the government and the health department.”

Amid the health experts’ worries about the New Year celebration, fearing the gathering of people might contribute significantly to the spread of the virus, the Chief Minister said: “How can I stop the New Year celebration programme? However, we are keeping a watch on the situation. I ask all the people to be conscious about the situation and behave rationally.”

She also asked everyone to behave responsibly in the Gangasagar Mela too. “I cannot stop the fair but people should be conscious,” she added.

On Wednesday, the chief minister had said that the state government was mulling to impose total restrictions again.

Speaking at an administrative meeting in South 24 Parganas, Banerjee had dropped broad hints that the state government might impose restrictions on schools and local trains to contain the spread of the virus.

During the meeting on Wednesday, she had also said that the cases were increasing and therefore, the state government might declare school holidays for some days and if necessary, the government might even close schools and colleges.

Stock market ends on positive note over NDA’s huge victory in Bihar polls

Published

Mumbai, Nov 14: Indian equity indices recovered from early losses to end the session on a positive note on Friday as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) headed towards a landslide win in the Bihar elections.

The key indices remained volatile throughout the session as counting for votes for Bihar’s Assembly election continues.

Sensex settled at 84,562.78, up 84.11 points or 0.10 per cent. The share index started the session at 84,060.14, falling over 400 points against last day’s closing of 84,478.67 amid caution ahead of Bihar election results. However, the index jumped over 550 points from the day’s low to close in green.

Nifty closed at 25,910.05, up 30.90 points or 0.12 per cent.

“Indian markets today witnessed a roller-coaster session with the benchmark index Nifty showing sharp two-sided moves. In the first half, Nifty surged and tested the crucial 26,000 level before facing resistance and slipping lower later in the day,” Ashika Institutional Equities said in its note.

Volatility remained elevated as investors stayed cautious ahead of Bihar election results, which hold significant political importance.

Tata Motors, Eternal, Axis Bank, BEL, Trent, SBI, Sun Pharma, Bajaj Finance, Adani Airports, Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, ITC and NTPC were the top gainers from the Sensex basket. Infosys, Tata Steel, Tata Motors PV, ICICI Bank, Maruti Suzuki and Tech Mahindra ended the session lower.

Sectoral indices experienced a mixed approach with selling in the IT and auto sectors and buying in the FMCG, banking and finance stocks. Nifty Bank rose 135 points or 0.23 per cent, Nifty Fin Services jumped 95 points or 0.35 per cent, and Nifty FMCG closed 317 points or 0.57 per cent higher. While Nifty IT slipped 378 points or 1.03 per cent, and Nifty Auto fell 143 points or 0.52 per cent.

Broader market followed suit as well, with Nifty Midcap 100 closed flat, Nifty Small Cap 100 rose 68 points or 0.38 per cent, and Nifty 100 ended the session slightly up.

Rupee traded in a narrow range near 88.70 as the dollar index remained flat around $99.20, offering limited directional cues.

“With no major U.S. data releases due to the recent shutdown, the market stayed largely dependent on flows, where mixed FII activity and consistent DII buying kept the rupee in a confined band. Crude prices have begun to rebound, and if WTI sustains above $60, it may add fresh pressure on the rupee in the coming sessions. Overall, the rupee is expected to remain range-bound with levels seen between 88.45–88.95,” said Jateen Trivedi of LKP Securities.

Bihar election results restore people’s confidence in NDA: MP Shrikant Shinde

Published

on

Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader and MP Shrikant Shinde expressed happiness over the NDA’s victory in the Bihar elections and said that the historic victory in the Bihar elections is a testament to the unwavering faith of the people under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The people of Bihar have completely rejected the forces that foster corruption, anarchy and jungle raj. The people have chosen Mangal Raj, not jungle raj. The Congress and its allies, which relied on the politics of caste and appeasement, have been completely defeated. The Congress’s fall to single digits exposes the bitter truth that Rahul Gandhi’s politics has no impact in a large and conscious state. His caste, communal card and whatever narrative he has created have all failed miserably. The poor, the backward, women, youth, farmers and workers of Bihar have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the NDA. This public trust is a decisive affirmation of Nitish Kumar’s clean image, good governance and people-oriented politics. No matter how many attacks the opposition makes, the people have chosen the path of stability, security and development.

The wave of massive government formation in Bihar proves that India wants change, but the change must be from anarchy to stability, from corruption to accountability, from jungle raj to good governance. And this change can only be delivered by the NDA.

It is unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition tried to derail the election on an issue like SIR and tried to damage the reputation of a prestigious institution like the Election Commission. The people of Bihar have completely rejected this irresponsible politics. They have chosen democracy, not chaos.
Bihar has given a clear, unambiguous and historic message that NDA is the future. Congress and its allies deserve to lead, govern or have the trust of the people.

I congratulate the people and voters of Bihar. I wish the new NDA government in Bihar all the best for its future work and journey.

Mumbai: 19-Year-Old Student Alleges Sexual Abuse, Forced Surgery & Extortion By Transgender Gang

Mumbai, November 14: A 19-year-old BCom student from Malad has accused a local transgender gang of forcing him into gender reassignment surgery, blackmailing him and subjecting him to physical and mental abuse over several months. The teen, a resident of Appapada in Kurar village, told police he became friends with Kaveri, also known as Kartik Vedamani Nikam, around a year and a half ago. Through this acquaintance, he met Neha Khan, also known as Neha Ipte, who allegedly headed a transgender group in Malwani.

According to the complaint, the student was called to Neha’s home on August 5, where Neha, Kaveri, Bhaskar Shetty and Mahi allegedly tried to convince him to undergo gender transition. When he refused, they reportedly locked him in a room, assaulted him and forced him to perform obscene acts which were filmed. The video was then allegedly used to demand money. His mother transferred ten thousand rupees out of fear.

Over the next two months, the gang allegedly demanded more money and publicly humiliated him. He says he was beaten, made to wear a saree and forced to beg.

The complaint states that on October 28, Neha, her husband Sohail Khan, their adopted son Bhaskar and others took him to a hospital near Ripple Mall in Surat. There, he was allegedly compelled to sign papers and was subjected to gender reassignment surgery. After returning to Mumbai, he claims Neha poured hot water on his operated area and forced him to do chores. She allegedly demanded four and a half lakh rupees to release him.

The teen escaped on November 4 but was allegedly abducted again hours later. A local resident intervened and he was freed. A zero FIR was filed at Kurar police station before the case was transferred to Malwani police.

“Based on the victim’s statement, we have booked the accused under sections related to conspiracy, kidnapping, sexual assault, extortion and forced medical mutilation,” an officer said. Police have arrested four people and the probe is ongoing.
