Mumbai Police serve summons to Kunal Kamra in controversial remarks case

Mumbai, March 25: Mumbai Police on Tuesday issued a summons to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra to remain present to record his statement in a case registered against him in connection with his controversial statement against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Police sources said that a team from Khar police station delivered the summons at Kamra’s residence in the city where his parents stay. Sources said as the comedian is out of Mumbai, the police have sent summons on his WhatsApp.
Shiv Sena legislator Mangesh Kudalkar on Monday also filed a complaint in the Kurla Nehrunagar police station against Kamra, and urged the police to register a case. Kamra is in Puducherry currently and has told the police that he will fully cooperate with them in the investigation.
Earlier, the MIDC police station registered a Zero FIR against Kamra for cracking an allegedly objectionable joke during a standup comedy show. The Khar police booked Yuva Sena general secretary Rahool Kanal under various sections of the BNS and the Maharashtra Police Act for vandalism.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 9, Dixit Gedam said two offences have been registered at Khar police station. One is against Kamra over derogatory comments while the other is against people who vandalised the Unicontinental hotel where the shoot of Kamra’s comedy show took place. He further added that the investigation is underway.
Shiv Sena has demanded an unconditional apology from Kamra while the opposition has slammed the state government for being so fast in registering offence against Kamra while saving those who insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Kamra late Monday night reiterated that he would not apologise for his comment, saying, “I don’t fear this mob and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.”
In his post on X, Kamra said,“ I will not apologise. What I said is exactly what Mr Ajit Pawar (first DCM) said about Mr Eknath Shinde (second DCM). To the political elders threatening to teach me lesson, Our right to freedom of speech and expression is not only used routinely to fawn over the powerful and rich even though today’s media would have us believe otherwise. Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right. As far as I know, it is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the circus that is our political system.”
He further said, “However, I am willing to cooperate with the police and courts for any lawful action taken against me. But will the law be fairly and equally deployed against those who have decided that vandalism is the appropriate response to being offended by a joke? And against the unelected members of the BMC, who have arrived today at Habitat without prior notice and tore the place down with hammers? Perhaps for my next venue, I will opt for Elphinstone bridge, or any other structure in Mumbai that’s in need of speedy demolition.”
“To the mob that decided that Habitat should not stand. An entertainment venue is merely a platform. A space for all sorts of shows. Habitat (or any other venue) is not responsible for my comedy, nor does it have any power or control over what I say or do. Neither does any political party. Attacking a venue for a comedian’s words is senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes because you did not like the butter chicken you were served,” he said.

Disha Salian case: Fresh FIR names Aaditya Thackeray, Rhea Chakraborty, Dino Morea

Mumbai, March 25: An FIR has been filed against Shiv Sena(UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, Rhea Chakraborty, Dino Morea, Suraj Pancholi and others in Disha Salian’s death case, her father’s advocate said on Tuesday.
Satish Salian’s advocate Nilesh Ojha filed a fresh FIR in her death case. Ojha said that a written complaint has been filed with the police commissioner. In the FIR, the names of Aaditya Thackeray, Dino Morea and Suraj Pancholi have been mentioned.
According to Ojha, a written complaint to the police commissioner’s office was accepted by the joint commissioner of police (crime). The complaint is incorporated in the FIR. He further stated, “Aaditya Thackeray, Dino Morea, Suraj Pancholi and his bodyguard, Parambir Singh, Sachin Vaze and Rhea Chakraborty are all accused in the FIR.”
He claimed that Parambir Singh was the main mastermind for the coverup in the case. Ojha said, “Parambir Singh held a press conference and fabricated lies to save Aaditya Thackeray. NCB’s probe proves that Aaditya Thackeray was involved in a drug business and it has been also mentioned in the FIR.”
Ojha said that former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his associates hatched a conspiracy to suppress this serious crime. Some senior police officers were also involved in the conspiracy as they misused police and government machinery, created false police records, suppressed witnesses and tried to hide criminal evidence.
“It is my sincere request that all these acts should be immediately prosecuted under sections 376(D), 302, 409, 120(B), 107, 109, 166, 167 and other applicable sections of the IPC and strict action be taken against the accused,” said Ojha.
The move comes after Satish Salian recently filed a petition in the high court seeking a CBI probe into his daughter’s death. He had claimed that Disha was raped and murdered and he has named Aaditya Thackeray in the petition.
Disha Salian, who was a former manager of the late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, died on June 8, 2020, after allegedly falling from the 14th floor of a highrise building in Mumbai. At the time, the Mumbai Police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). Six days later, Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence. While the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the actor’s death probe, an SIT (Special Investigation Team) was constituted by the Maharashtra government in 2023 to investigate Disha’s death.

Kunal Kamra Row: ‘Kabhi Toh Bahar Aayega Na, Kahan Chupega?’, Shinde Sena’s Gulab Patil’s THREAT To Comedian

Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra’s refusal to apologise for his joke about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has sparked strong reactions from state government ministers. The controversy erupted after Kamra performed a stand-up act in Mumbai where he took a dig at Shinde’s political career, referring to him as a ‘gaddar‘ (traitor) in a parody of a popular Hindi song from Dil To Pagal Hai. His jokes also touched upon the recent political shifts in Maharashtra, including the Shiv Sena and NCP splits.
Gulab Patil’s Threat To Kunal Kamra
The backlash from the ruling coalition was swift. Shiv Sena leader Gulab Patil, speaking to reporters, warned Kamra of consequences if he did not apologise. “Shiv Sena won’t leave him… We won’t tolerate this insult. If he doesn’t apologise, kabhi toh bahar aayega na, kaha chupega? (he will come out, where will he hide?) The Shiv Sena will show its real form,” he said.
Minister of State for Home Yogesh Ramdas Kadam also condemned Kamra’s act, stating that punishment would follow. “He will be punished. If you are going to insult the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister, Hindu Gods and Goddesses, it is not tolerable. You cannot behave like this in Maharashtra or India… We enjoy comedy, but this is not the kind of comedy that will be tolerated,” Kadam told the media.
Kunal Kamra Refuses To Apologise
Despite these warnings, Kamra remained defiant. On Monday, he posted a statement on his official social media account, making it clear that he would not apologise for his act. Meanwhile, the Khar police issued a summons asking him to appear before the investigating officer at 11 am today. However, Mumbai police confirmed that Kamra is currently not in the city.
The controversy also led to legal action. The MIDC police registered an FIR against Kamra for his remarks and the case was later transferred to Khar police for further investigation.

Doctors hint fresh stir after Calcutta HC’s ‘rape or gang-rape’ query in RG Kar case

Kolkata, March 25: The observation by a single judge bench of Calcutta High Court, asking the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to clarify whether the ghastly R.G. Kar rape and murder case in August last year was a case of “rape or gang-rape” has encouraged different organisations spearheading the movement to start a fresh stir.
After this, the leading protest groups have made it clear that CBI would be the target of their future protests in the matter now. According to an office-bearer of one such group, Medical Service Centre, the CBI has yet to file a supplementary charge sheet highlighting the aspects of the larger conspiracy behind the tragedy.
“We had been saying for a long time that the CBI had been trying to wash their hands off just by ensuring the conviction and sentencing of civic volunteer Sanjay Roy. The Calcutta High Court too seems to have realized it as evident from its observation on Monday. “Now it is time again to start a fresh movement on this issue and if necessary the series of protests like ‘reclaiming the night’ as was done last year. We demand that CBI reaches a quick and logical conclusion revealing the larger conspiracy behind the tragedy,” he added.
At the same time, said a representative of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, another association, which led the protests last year, the future movements will also focus on the role of the state government in trying to stall a fresh probe into the case by raising legal points.
“On one hand, the CBI had failed miserably in discharging their duty in revealing the larger conspiracy behind the tragedy. And now the state government seems to be determined to create hurdles for further investigation into the matter. Our next course of movement, which will be announced shortly, will be against both CBI and the state government,” claimed an activist.
On Monday, the state government counsel and Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee submitted that the state government was not opposed to further investigation into the matter. However, he questioned whether this could be done after the trial process had been completed at a special court.
Even the victim’s parents also strongly objected to the line of the state government counsel in the matter.
“On one hand, the state government is claiming that it did not have any objection to further investigation. On the other hand, it is raising questions on the legal aspects of whether further investigation could be carried out or not. The state government is not making it clear what it wants. This particular approach on the part of the state government had been evident since the body of our daughter was recovered from within the hospital premises in the morning of August 9 last year,” the victim’s father said after the hearing on Monday.
