Success of ‘Jan Ashirwad Yatras’ left oppn ‘disturbed & nervous’: J.P. Nadda

The success of ‘Jan Ashirwad Yatras’ across the country has left the opposition parties “disturbed and nervous”, BJP president J.P. Nadda said on Saturday.
Nadda also claimed that the opposition parties “unsuccessfully” tried to disturb and create “hindrances” in the yatra and programmes.
“All ploys and disturbances have failed to shake the strong support and trust that the people have showered on the Modi government,” the BJP chief said in a statement.
“We have seen how the opposition parties’ coalition government in Maharashtra tried to target Union Minister Narayan Rane. It is a direct attack on our democratic system. The people’s support forced all narrow minded opposition parties and our political adversaries to retreat,” he elaborated.
Thanking people for “their support”, Nadda said that they (people) have stood strongly with the politics of development and growth under the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He shared that the yatras, which began on the Independence Day and lasted till August 28, covered more than 24,000 kms in 14 days, wherein over 5,000 programmes were organised.
“All these programmes were highly successful, which also ensured enthusiastic participation of people from all walks of life. Entire credit of the success of the Jan Ashirwad Yatra goes to the people of India,” Nadda asserted.
The BJP chief claimed that the yatras by the 39 newly appointed Union Ministers have been appreciated widely across the country and the people across the states have “heartily welcomed” the new ministers.
“People lauded the BJP government led by Prime Minister Modi for doing the all-round development and progress of India,” he said.
“The Modi government has announced several pro-people and pro-poor policies and programmes that have touched the lives of all sections of our society today.”
“It has taken several initiatives to boost India’s security and safety and take our country on the path of prosperity and growth,” Nadda added.
He further mentioned that the “tremendous success” of the yatras are also proof of the ‘Vikas Yatra’ that the country has seen under the dynamic and decisive leadership of the Prime Minister.
“I congratulate and thank our Prime Minister Modi for working so devotedly, tirelessly and with full dedication for our country,” the BJP president said.

Murder accused shot by TN Police after attacking officers in Salem

Salem, May 24: A 26-year-old man accused of the brutal murder of a 70-year-old woman in Omalur, Salem, was shot in the leg by police early Saturday after he attacked two officers with a machete while trying to escape from his hideout near Sankari Fort.
The accused, Naresh Kumar of Kattikaranoor village in Omalur block, is a habitual offender with over 20 robbery cases registered against him across various police stations in the district.
The incident traces back to May 20, when the victim, Sarasu alias Saraswathi, a resident of Chinnerikadu in Omalur, was murdered while grazing her cattle. Her body was discovered by locals along a roadside path, bearing injuries to her ear and nose.
Initial investigation suggested that she had been attacked for her gold jewellery, with at least one sovereign of gold reported stolen. A murder and robbery case was registered by the Deevattipatti police. In response, special teams were formed to track down the suspect.
Based on intelligence inputs and surveillance, police identified Naresh Kumar as the prime suspect and located his hideout at the foothills of Sankari Fort.
During the early hours of Saturday, a special police team closed in on his location. However, as officers attempted to apprehend him, Naresh Kumar brandished a machete and violently attacked Sub-Inspector Vijayaraghavan and Constable Selvakumar, injuring both.
In an act of self-defence and to prevent his escape, one of the officers fired a service pistol, hitting the accused in the leg. Naresh Kumar collapsed on the spot and was immediately taken into custody.
He, along with the injured policemen, was admitted to the Government Hospital in Sankari for treatment.
According to police sources, Naresh Kumar has a criminal history of targeting elderly women in rural areas, primarily for jewellery snatching. Previous incidents have been reported from Sankari and Magudanchavadi.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of senior citizens in the region and the increasing audacity of repeat offenders. Police have intensified surveillance and patrolling in vulnerable rural zones to prevent further attacks.

CBI brings back fugitive Angad Singh Chandok from US in bank fraud case

New Delhi, May 24: In a major breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has brought back fugitive economic offender Angad Singh Chandok from the US to India.
Chandok is wanted in connection with a high-profile bank fraud and money laundering case and had been absconding for a long time.
He was deported by US authorities and landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport early Saturday morning.
CBI officials immediately took him into custody upon arrival. He is expected to be produced before a special CBI court later on Saturday, where the agency is likely to seek his custodial remand for further interrogation.
Chandok’s return marks a significant step in India’s efforts to crack down on economic fugitives who evade justice by fleeing abroad. It also reflects increased cooperation between Indian and international law enforcement agencies, particularly the United States, in tackling financial crimes with cross-border implications.
Chandok, 34, was sentenced to six years in prison by a US court in 2022. The court found him guilty of operating a long-running and complex money laundering network while living in California.
According to the ruling, Chandok created and used multiple shell companies to launder millions of dollars obtained through fraudulent means — initially via an online tech support scam and later through a fake online travel fee scheme.
The court noted that Chandok had a team of at least five individuals working under him and maintained direct communication with high-ranking international members of the criminal syndicate. He was also declared an international fugitive at the time of these offences.
His deportation is expected to strengthen India’s resolve in pursuing economic offenders and bringing them to justice, regardless of their location.

Shiv Sena demands suspension of Mumbai-Turkey flights

Mumbai, May 24: Shiv Sena Social Media In-charge, Rahool Kanal, in letters addressed to the Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has made a strong plea for the suspension of flights from Mumbai to Istanbul until Turkey clarifies its stand on terrorism and distances itself from supporting Pakistan.
He expressed concern on Friday over Turkey’s recent actions in supporting Pakistan against India’s fight against terrorism.
“Given the gravity of the situation, I strongly believe that India should revaluate its relationship with Turkey,” he said.
“Mumbai being a significant contributor to India’s tourism industry (36 per cent of total tourism) has a substantial impact on international relations. Indians are among Turkey’s biggest visitors and spenders. However, until Turkey publicly denounces its support for Pakistan in India’s fight against terrorism, I urge the government to consider banning all flight services from Mumbai to Turkey,” Kanal added.
He said the three flights from Mumbai to Istanbul by Turkish Airlines and one flight by Indigo on May 29 should be suspended.
“Banning these flights would be befitting response to Turkey’s actions, demonstrating India’s commitment to national security and sovereignty,” he added.
The potential measures which were suggested were: Diplomatic Action, immediate suspend of diplomatic relations with Turkey; Economic sanctions by restricting trade and investment between the countries; Raising the issues on international forums to build global consensus against Turkey’s actions and imposing a tourism ban.
According to Kanal, India accounts for 30 per cent of total tourists in turkey, with more than three lakh people visiting the country in 2024.
Earlier on May 22, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India expects Turkey to strongly urge Pakistan to end its support to cross-border terrorism.
“We expect Turkey to strongly urge Pakistan to end its support to cross-border terrorism and take credible and verifiable actions against the terror ecosystem it has harboured for decades. Relations are built on the basis of sensitivities to each other’s concerns,” Jaiswal added.
Following Turkey’s alleged support for Pakistan, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security revoked the security clearance of a Turkish firm Celebi Airport Services India Pvt Ltd, citing national security concerns.
Celebi has filed a plea in the Delhi High Court against the decision.
