Nair Hospital Dean obstructed implementation of POSH law, didn't co-operate, says BMC's POSH committee

Mumbai: The BMC’s Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) committee has found the Dean of Nair Hospital guilty of obstructing the implementation of the law and failing to cooperate in the proceedings of a sexual harassment complaint filed by an MBBS student against an associate professor.

Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Rais Shaikh wrote to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde demanding immediate action against the Dean of Nair Hospital to ensure safety of the girl students in medical colleges. A clear message needs to send out across the state that government is firmly committed to ensuring women’s safety, said Shaikh.

As per the POSH committee’s report, the associate professor from the pharmacology department at Nair Hospital has been found guilty in the sexual harrasment complaint filed by the MBBS student. The professor was accused of misbehaviour and inappropriately touching the student, causing her distress.

“The role of the Dean of the Nair Hospital in this case apears unfortunate and insensitive. The Dean created hurdles in the implementation of the law. The Dean did not cooperate in the proceedings of the case and delayed the implementation of the orders given by his superiors. Therefore, a written warning should be issued to the Dean of the Nair Hospital,” stated the POSH committee report.

Shaikh has condemned the Dean’s role in the case as unacceptable and called for stern action to set a strong precedent that shows the government’s commitment to protecting girl students.

The Dean’s actions contribute to the public perception that senior officials in departments support the accused instead of the complainants in such cases. It is crucial to set an example and show that the government stands firmly with the girls in ensuring their safety. I hope Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will take prompt and decisive action in this matter,” Shaikh said.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Samajwadi Party leader Worker Assembly Abu Asim Azmi criticized the statement of Home Minister Amit Shah and said that it is the responsibility of the Home Minister and the Central Government to take action against Bangladeshi and Pakistani infiltrators. The population of Muslims in India has increased due to Bangladeshis. This is completely wrong. The residents of West Bengal and ordinary Muslims are being targeted under the guise of Bangladeshi and Pakistanis. He said that the government is yours in many states and at the center, so how do Bangladeshi infiltrators enter from the border? What action has the government taken against those who forge their documents so far? He said that targeting Muslims under the guise of Bangladeshi should be stopped, just as Karat Soumya is trying to fake the certificates and documents of every Muslim and is targeting Muslims. He said that the government should pay attention to how Bangladeshi infiltrators infiltrate from the Indian border. This is not the job of Congress, SP or other parties. It is the job of the government to take action against Bangladeshi and Pakistanis and to bring them to justice. But Muslims should not be harassed or disturbed. He said that action is being taken against those officers who are preparing documents for Bangladeshis.
