Mumbai: 4 Staff At Bandra Pub Charged With Assaulting 20-Year-Old Student

Police have charged four employees of a popular pub in Bandra (West) with causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons to a resident of Thane. Arnav Mishra, 20, a student at the University of British Columbia, Canada, suffered partial loss of vision after getting hit in the eye by a bouncer, named Vijay, at the pub.

The police filed an FIR against two bouncers, including Vijay, a manager and an unknown individual on Wednesday. They later arrested the bouncers.

Arnav had come to India on holiday in May. On June 28, he and his friends, Amey Badrapurkar, Amba Murugan and Shivani Ramaswami, went to Escobar at around 11.45pm. Arnav claimed that an unidentified individual (between 25 to 28 years old) “looked at him angrily”. At 12.30am, when he went to the bathroom, he saw the unidentified individual scolding a cleaning staff. Arnav intervened and asked the unidentified individual why he was speaking like that.

The unidentified individual replied, “Who are you?” Arnav ignored him, but the individual tried to argue and said, “Fight me if you dare.” Arnav left the bathroom. Later, Vijay told Arnav that the unidentified individual’s ego was hurt. After some time, Arnav and his friends went on the dance floor.

While they were dancing, the unidentified individual and Vijay approached Arnav. While the bouncer was talking to Arnav, the unidentified individual hit Arnav in the left eye with an iron object, causing partial loss of vision. Soon after, Vijay and another bouncer removed Arnav and his friends from the pub. Arnav told the police he suspected a few individuals had been stalking him for the previous few days.

Amey stated, “There was one more individual with the main accused. The main accused wore a Covid-19 mask and was heavily intoxicated. He was staring at us. He hit Arnav with some kind of iron rod. His vision is now partially impaired. The unidentified individual attacked us first, and the bouncers removed us instead of him. When we asked them to remove him, they told us to leave, or he would beat us again.”

The medical report confirmed the injuries sustained by Arnav. Arnav approached the police and registered a case against the unidentified individual, Vijay, another bouncer, and the manager of the pub.

Internal Rift May Cost Samajwadi Party Dear: Political Turmoil in Ward 211 Involving MLA Rais Shaikh

Published

on

Mumbai: The ongoing tension between Samajwadi Party (SP) Maharashtra president Abu Asim Azmi and the party’s own MLA Rais Shaikh has taken a serious turn and could prove politically costly for the party in Mumbai and Bhiwandi. What began as internal differences has now escalated into an open power struggle, just as the bugle for municipal corporation elections across Mumbai and Maharashtra has been sounded.

For the past several months, relations between Abu Asim Azmi and MLA Rais Shaikh have remained strained. Sources within the party claim that Azmi had decided to completely sideline Rais Shaikh and hand over key organisational responsibilities to Yusuf Abhrani, a former Congress leader who recently joined the Samajwadi Party. This move reportedly deepened the rift, with speculation rife that Rais Shaikh might even switch allegiance to Ajit Pawar’s camp or return to the Congress, as he felt marginalised within his own party.

The simmering internal conflict has now spilled into the open with the start of civic election preparations. Rais Shaikh had requested party leadership to allot municipal tickets to some of his close aides, but the Samajwadi Party leadership allegedly refused to give tickets to any of his supporters. Feeling politically cornered, Rais Shaikh responded by fielding several of his associates as independent candidates.

More significantly, Rais Shaikh is said to have played a key role in ensuring that his personal assistant, Waqar Khan, received a Congress ticket from Ward No. 211—a seat that was earlier considered a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party. With Congress now officially fielding Waqar Khan from this ward, SP risks losing a seat it was once confident of winning.

Political observers believe that ignoring Rais Shaikh could cost the Samajwadi Party heavily not only in Govandi but also in Bhiwandi, where multiple seats may be affected due to rebel candidates and divided votes. Meanwhile, Yusuf Abhrani—projected as Rais Shaikh’s replacement—has fielded his daughter-in-law against Geeta Gawli, daughter of Arun Gawli, a move that too appears to have weakened SP’s prospects in that constituency.

As factionalism deepens, the Samajwadi Party now faces the possibility of significant electoral losses in key urban pockets. Whether the leadership will attempt damage control or allow the rift to widen further remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: internal discord may prove more damaging than opposition attacks in the upcoming municipal elections.
