Acting on specific intelligence, NCB Mumbai intercepted three courier parcels on July 21 and July 25, which were bound for New Zealand. In this connection, a total of 10.990 kg of ephedrine was seized and an associate of a major drug smuggler named S Hameed was arrested from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. NCB Mumbai was actively working on an international ephedrine smuggling network that was operating from Chennai and was using fake documents to book international couriers in foreign countries. In an attempt to mislead the drug law enforcement agencies, the drug associates used to travel to several cities like Mumbai, Pune to book courier parcels. On July 21, a credible information was generated which led to the identification of two courier parcels suspected to be concealing ephedrine in New Zealand. Accordingly, NCB Mumbai intercepted two suspicious courier parcels in Mumbai. When opened, floor mats were found in both the parcels. On closer inspection, the mats contained 07 kg of ephedrine hidden between the layers of mats and rolls of cloth. When the documents attached to the courier were verified, they were found to be fake.

During the investigation, a suspect residing in the Triplicane area of ​​Chennai, Tamil Nadu was found. The investigation led to the identity and whereabouts of the suspect. During the search of the place, an associate of the drug smuggler named S Hameed was arrested with documents like packing material, digital weighing machine, heat sealing machines, plastic bags and fake identity cards, digital gadgets. Accordingly, S Hameed was arrested on July 23 and brought to Mumbai.

During the investigation, S Hameed revealed about another courier parcel which was in transit to New Zealand. The investigation led to the interception of this courier parcel in Kalyan district, Maharashtra on July 25. When this courier parcel was opened and examined, a similar procedure was noted in which 3.990 kilograms of ephedrine was hidden in layers of bed sheets and photo frames. Being a controlled substance that is misused to manufacture other illegal drugs, the source of the ephedrine is being traced along with other drug associates. Further investigation is underway in this case.

Ephedrine is a stimulant drug whose medical use is limited to hard drugs only. However, it is also illegally misused as a primary ingredient to manufacture methamphetamine, a highly addictive neurotoxin. Methamphetamine use alters the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, causing euphoria and hallucinations that gradually take a toll on health and can be fatal in some cases.

This operation marks the continuous efforts of NCB in dismantling organised drug gangs and targeting habitual criminals who fuel the drug ecosystem. The Bureau is steadfast in its mission to protect public health and uphold the vision of a “Nisha Mukt Bharat” by 2047.

Mumbai: Social worker Umar Lakdawala has raised concerns over the removal of the long-standing Jhoola Maidan Fancy Market, calling for justice and the restoration of livelihoods for hundreds of affected hawkers.

Speaking on the issue, Lakdawala said that Jhoola Maidan Fancy Market has been a source of livelihood for thousands of families for nearly 50 years. The market also served as an important shopping destination for residents of Agripada and Byculla, providing easy access to a wide range of daily household essentials.

According to Lakdawala, the closure of the market has not only deprived more than 500 hawkers of their livelihoods but has also caused inconvenience to local residents, especially women who depended on the market for their daily shopping needs.

He alleged that the removal of the market was part of a larger conspiracy involving a developer, claiming that the issue of drugs was used as a pretext to justify the action. “We have always opposed drugs and will continue to stand firmly against the drug menace. However, the question remains why the livelihoods of over 500 poor hawkers were affected in a single day. Were all of them involved in illegal activities?” he asked.

Lakdawala further stated that if the law is to be enforced, it should be implemented uniformly across the entire Agripada police jurisdiction and E Ward, rather than targeting only one particular road or market. “Development is necessary, but it should not come at the cost of the livelihoods of poor people. Justice must be equal for everyone,” he said.

He also informed that he, along with his advocate, met the Senior Police Inspector of Agripada Police Station to discuss the matter. During the meeting, they highlighted their concerns regarding the alleged conspiracy behind the market’s removal and urged the authorities to find a solution that would enable the displaced hawkers to resume their businesses.

Expressing hope for a positive outcome, Lakdawala said he believes a fair solution can be reached and reaffirmed his commitment to standing with poor hawkers in their fight for justice and the protection of their livelihoods.

Mumbai: Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Varmalawangire has directed the deployment of additional manpower to ensure prompt processing of birth certificate applications in areas falling under Zone 5 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) such as Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar, Kurla and Chembur. He also directed that the working hours of Citizen Facilitation Centres be increased for the approval of these applications. Today (July 25, 2026), Lavangare reviewed the operations of the health department in the administrative wards of Zone 5 at the BMC’s M West Ward Office in Chembur. The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner (Public Health) Sharad Oghade, Deputy Commissioner (Zone 5) Scindia. Assistant Commissioner (M-East) Ujjwal Angole, Assistant Commissioner (M-West) Shankar Bhosale, and Executive Health Officer (Public Health Department) Dr. Daksha Shah. EML Varad East West wards need more effort to process applications related to birth certificates. Varmalawangire directed that applications should be accepted at the Citizen Facilitation Centres from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM to provide relief to the citizens. He further directed that these centres should remain open on Sundays for the convenience of the public. Assistant Commissioners at the administrative ward level should depute additional manpower to process the applications of the citizens, thus enabling a large number of applications to be processed. Varmalawangire directed that the applications should be processed and resolved within the shortest possible time after they are submitted. Software is being developed by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to handle applications for new birth certificates and corrections in existing ones. The software will facilitate submission of application details and uploading of relevant documents, while it will also include a dashboard. He directed that the software and dashboard be used to ensure maximum transparency in the birth certificate application process. He also directed that applications related to educational matters be given priority. A large number of applications are being submitted for QR code-based birth certificates required for overseas education and visa processing. He directed that these be resolved immediately.
During today’s meeting, Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajakta Vermalongare reviewed the status of Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects, monsoon-related disease incidents, and capacity expansion and repair works in maternity homes and suburban hospitals. He issued necessary instructions to the health department. The performance of Lokmanya Tilak General Hospital (Saiyan), Govind Shatabdi Hospital, and Maa Hospital (Chembur) was also reviewed. Prajakta Verma-Lawangire directed the department heads to conduct regular reviews to ensure transparency in the functioning of the health administration and prompt resolution of civic issues. He also directed the Assistant Commissioners within the zones to conduct regular site visits.
