Five truck drivers of a cement company were killed and three others injured when Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) militants fired upon them in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

The attack happened late on Thursday night, police said on Friday.

A senior Police official in Guwahati said that the DNLA extremists fired several rounds at the truck drivers and other people before setting six of the trucks on fire. At least seven drivers and assistants of the trucks managed to flee inside the nearby jungles when the extremists fired on them from the sophisticated weapons.

Assam Rifles troopers and Assam police personnel led by district police chief Jayant Singh have rushed to the spot — Rangerbeel on Umrangsu Lanka Road — and recovered the charred bodies of the five drivers from the burnt trucks.

The security forces have launched a massive combing operation to nab the militants in the hilly district, which is around 300 km southeast of Guwahati.

The trucks were carrying coal and other material for a nearby cement manufacturing plant.

The Dima Hasao district, formerly North Cachar District, one of Assam’s three hill districts was earlier a hotbed of militant activities and in the recent years there was no major extremist violence.

In May, the security forces during an encounter gunned down six DNLA cadres in the Dhansiri area of Karbi Anglong district. Arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession.

The operation of the security forces was launched after the DNLA rebels killed a villager in the area. The outfit reportedly was carrying out extortion and abduction in Dima Hasao district and adjoining areas. Several top leaders of the militant outfit were earlier arrested by the security forces.

Formed in 2018, the DNLA is believed to be active in the Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong districts, as well as in neighbouring Nagaland.

Ten persons arrested for attack on Congress MP, says Assam CM

Guwahati, Feb 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that ten persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on Congress MP Rakibul Hussain.

Taking to social media platform X, CM Sarma said, “The police have identified the individuals involved in the alleged incident of assault on Congress MP Sri Rakibul Hussain.”

He also mentioned that the actions will be taken as per the law.

The Dhubri MP was attacked while attending a public programme in the Nagaon district.

The Congress MP had to run from the spot wearing a helmet to save himself. The security officers of Hussain sustained minor injuries in the attack.

In a viral video, it was seen that some masked miscreants initially showed black flags to the Congress MP and after that attacked him.

In the video, Hussian was seen fleeing from the spot in a two-wheeler to save himself from the attack.

The incident that happened in the Ruporihat locality drew criticism from the opposition with Congress leaders training guns on the BJP government.

Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, launched a sharp attack on the BJP government as Congress MP Hussain was attacked on Thursday.

Gogoi said, “In Assam, a Congress Lok Sabha MP is attacked by thugs in broad daylight in a busy marketplace. The goons even attack the police security officers and try to snatch their weapons. All of this is recorded on camera. Yet the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma refuses to ensure that the thugs will be arrested immediately.”

“The Chief Minister should at least think of his constitutional duty towards Assam Police and the innocent civilians in the marketplace. If the goons had got hold of the machine gun, a terrible tragedy could have taken place. The attitude of the Chief Minister will only embolden the thieves, dacoits, smugglers and those accused of murder. Democracy is under threat and people of Assam want freedom from this gunda raj culture,” he added.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Debabrata Saikia said it was a “failure” of the police and administration.

Mumbai: A major revelation has emerged in the investigation into the murder of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique. A video of fugitive accused Zeeshan Akhtar has gone viral on social media, in which he claims to have received shelter and assistance from notorious Pakistani gangster Shehzad Bhatti.

Key accused claimed from the viral video that Shehzad Bhatti from Pakistan allegedly helped him escape and provided protection. Zeeshan Akhtar claims to be outside the Asian continent. The video also contains direct threats to rival enemies.

“I have been falsely implicated in the Baba Siddique case, and Shahzad Bhatti helped me escape from India,” Zeeshan says in the video. He adds, “Shahzad Bhatti is like an elder brother to me; he protects us. He secured asylum for me in a country far from India.” Zeeshan also issued threats to his alleged enemies, intensifying the controversy surrounding the video.

Following the video’s release, Shahzad Bhatti himself confirmed his involvement in Zeeshan’s escape, referring to him as a “brother.” Bhatti, a notorious gangster based in Pakistan, is known for his provocative social media presence, frequently sharing videos featuring firearms and issuing threats. He recently made headlines for a video call with Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Bhatti’s alleged connections to Pakistan’s underworld have even led to a ban on him within his home country.

Meanwhile, authorities are working to verify Zeeshan’s identity and investigate the authenticity of his claims. The Mumbai Police’s cyber team is analyzing the footage to track Zeeshan Akhtar’s whereabouts and verify his claims of receiving assistance from Shehzad Bhatti.
