Maharashtra: No Funds For Shaktipeeth Highway Despite CM Devendra Fadnavis’s Push; Finance Dept Skips Provision In ₹57,509 Crore Supplementary Demands

Published

on

Mumbai: Despite a clear directive from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Finance Department (FD) has not made provision for the ambitious Shaktipeeth Highway while introducing Rs 57,509 crores supplementary demands in the State Assembly on Monday.

Significantly, the supplementaries, according to government sources, will put an additional Rs 40,000 Cr burden on the state kitty, which is already overburdened with debt of over Rs 9 lakh Cr. The Chief Minister had in a recent meeting on infrastructure projects, asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to set aside Rs 20,000 Cr for the land acquisition of Shaktipeeth Highway, 802 KM greenfield, access control six-lane express highway connecting Nagpur to Patradevi (Dist Sindhudurg) near the Goa border.

The project has been facing stiff opposition from farmers from various districts, which led to altercations with government officials during surveys in the districts of Solapur, Latur, Dharashiv and Parbhani. Despite that, the state cabinet in a recent meeting approved the design and Rs 20,787 Cr for planning and land acquisition for the project. Usually, if total provision is not possible, the Finance Department makes a token provision to indicate that a particular project or plan is very much on the cards, and the provision can be made down the line. But this does not seem to be the case with the Shaktipeeth Highway, which is estimated to cost over Rs 86,000 Cr.

An offical told the FPJ that government will have to ask the state legislature to make the financial provision as approved in the June 24 meeting of the state cabinet. The Finance Department, led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, however, has earmarked approximately Rs 10,000 Cr for the PWD. A majority of the provision will go for the state highways, district roads, the ring road for Pune and a Samruddhi Mahamarg link connecting Jalna to Nanded.

Although Shiv Sena has only four departments under it’s control whereas there are as many as eight departments with the BJP and seven with the NCP, it seems to have cornered a substantial part of the provisions. Urban Development Department, led by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, tops the list with the provision of Rs 15,465 Cr. The Public Health Department, led by Shinde’s party colleague Prakash Abitkar, will get Rs 6952 Cr.

Mumbai Weather Update: Cloudy Skies, Light To Moderate Showers Expected Today; No Rain Alert Issued

Published

on

Mumbai: Mumbai began the week under partially cloudy skies with light spells of rain reported in parts of the suburbs on Monday morning. After a week marked by heavy rainfall and frequent alerts, today’s weather is expected to bring some much-needed relief for residents.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) clarified that no weather alerts are in place for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri or Sindhudurg districts on September 8. While intermittent showers are likely in some areas, the overall weather will remain comparatively stable, sparing citizens the disruption witnessed last week.

For Mumbai, the forecast indicates cloudy conditions through the day with occasional light to moderate rain in isolated pockets. Heavy downpour is unlikely, reducing the threat of waterlogging and major traffic disruptions. Minimum temperature in the city is expected to hover around 26 degrees Celsius, while the maximum could touch 31 degrees Celsius. Wind speeds are predicted between 15 and 18 kmph, creating a breezy atmosphere.

Navi Mumbai and Thane are likely to see similar weather conditions, with cloud cover dominating the morning and scattered showers in the afternoon and evening. While heavy rain is not anticipated, localized water accumulation on roads cannot be ruled out. Temperatures in these regions will range between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, with winds moving at around 17 kmph.

Palghar, which had been under continuous weather alerts over the past three days, has been spared any warnings today. The district will likely experience cloudy conditions and mild rainfall in patches. Daytime temperatures are forecast between 24 and 29 degrees Celsius, offering residents a break from the intensity of earlier showers.

Along the coastal belt, including Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, no alerts have been issued either. However, moderate rain activity is expected across these districts. Temperatures here will stay between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, accompanied by slightly stronger winds moving at 18–20 kmph.

Vasai-Virar Illegal Construction Scam: ED Gets Custody Of Suspended Ex-VVCMC Deputy Director YS Reddy In Money Laundering Case

Published

on

Mumbai: The special PMLA court has allowed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to take the custody of YS Reddy, suspended deputy director of town planning of the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC), in the money laundering case linked to illegal constructions.

Apart from him, ex-VVCMC chief, IAS officer Anil Pawar, and builder duo, Sitaram Gupta and Arun Gupta, have been arrested. They were remanded to judicial custody for 14 days on August 20, however, the ED had reserved its right to obtain their custody for further interrogation.

Reddy was remanded to ED custody till Monday after the agency submitted that he needs to be questioned regarding the huge amount of cash and jewellery found at his residence.

The ED sought Reddy’s after a civic employee allegedly gave a statement that he along with Pawar forced him to collect and deliver bribes to them. The employee revealed that while big architects and builders had access to meet Pawar at his official residence, smaller architects would send their representatives with him to deliver cash to Pawar’s cook or other staff, said the officials.

The employee has also provided a list of 457 commencement certificates (CC) issued for projects in ‘Urban Zone’ and 129 CCs for D-Zone in lieu of bribes, they added.

The agency said that it has also recorded the statement of an architect on September 1, who claimed that Pawar and Reddy sought bribes for granting CCs. The architect said that he has negotiated and facilitated payment of bribes to the duo, as per the statement.

Besides, ED prosecutor Kavita Patil referred to the August 29 statement of a builder, who claimed that he had paid Rs4.28 crore in bribes, which were collected at a rate of Rs30 per sq ft, to the accused. The builder also claimed that he had paid around Rs15 crore to Reddy and Pawar for various approvals granted by them, said Patil.

However, Reddy’s lawyer argued that he has already given explanation to the adjudicating authority regarding the valuables seized from his residence and that seeking custody was the ED’s tactic not to submit its reply, as directed, in this regard by September 10.

Accepting the ED’s contention, the court said, “Considering the statements of witnesses and the list of CCs, the investigation cannot be completed in a proper manner without Reddy’s custody.”
