Maharashtra Legislature expresses solidarity with Marathi-speaking people on K’taka border

Published

on

In a much-anticipated development, the Maharashtra Legislature here on Tuesday adopted a resolution unanimously expressing full solidarity with the Marathi-speaking people living on the Karnataka border villages.

The resolution said the government will pursue the ongoing legal battle before the Supreme Court to merge the 865 Marathi-speaking villages with Maharashtra in Belagavi (Belgaum), Karwar, Nippani, Bidar, Bhalki and other towns and commit to include “each and every inch” of the lands there.

The state government will also urge the Centre to implement the decisions made at the recent meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah with the Chief Ministers of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde and of Karnataka Basavaraj Bommai in New Delhi.

“The state government remains firmly and with full commitment with the Marathi-speaking people from the 865 villages,” said the two-page resolution, moved by Shinde and adopted by the entire house with a voice vote and thumping desks.

With Speaker Rahul Narwekar in the Chair in the Assembly, Shinde, Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar and other leaders reiterated their full commitment to stand by the six-decade old struggles of the Marathi-speaking people in the borders.

Coming amid Karnataka recently staking claims over certain other villages in Sangli and Solapur districts here, the resolution calls upon the Centre to reprimand that state and guarantee the security of the Marathi-speaking population living in the 865 villages there.

“Maharashtra has already respected the will of the Marathi-speaking people from 865 villages for their inclusion in the state. The government has provided a slew of amenities and facilities for social, education and economic development,” said the resolution.

It added that the government has also provided other concessions like the benefits under the Chief Minister Relief Fund, special incentives for admissions to engineering and medical streams, pre-training for IAS, etc.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi allies like former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray, Congress state President Nana Patole and leaders of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and other parties heartily welcomed the passing of the resolution.

However, Thackeray questioned whether the Maharashtra government’s initiatives shall be applicable to the Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka given that state’s aggressive stance on the issue.

“We shall welcome any such resolution that is in Maharashtra’s interests. We still demand that given the current circumstances the disputed boundary areas must be declared as Union Territory to protect the local Marathi-speaking people,” Thackeray demanded.

The development came almost a week after the Karnataka Legislature passed a similar resolution to safeguard its interests and condemned the boundary row that was created by the state, resulting in a political furore here with the Opposition MVA and others clamouring to bring up the resolution here on priority.

Muslims have not benefited from the ownership of waqf, try to inform Muslims about the Shariah status of waqf property: Mufti Manzoor Ziai

Mumbai: After the implementation of the Waqf law, Mufti Manzoor Zia’s book Waqf Sharia, Politics and Reforms in the Indian Context was launched at the Mumbai Press Club, in which Mufti Manzoor Zia openly admitted about the book and said that this book focuses on the Sharia status of Waqf and other issues in the context of Waqf law. This book has a very detailed discussion about Waqf in the context of Islamic teachings. Mufti Manzoor said that there has been a long series of protests against the Waqf law, but till now there has been large-scale division and misuse of Waqf properties.

Protesting against this act is a democratic right, but it cannot be done regardless of what has happened to the ownership of Waqf so far and who is occupying its property. Eliminating encroachment from the ownership of Waqf is also the need of the hour. This Waqf is done in the way of God, but the common Muslims have not benefited from the ownership of this Waqf. Big protests and processions are being held, but why no hospitals, educational institutions and medical institutions have been built on the endowment property? He said that even the talented people of the nation are not able to get educational scholarships. The condition of the Imams is pathetic.

The 12-year-old child of an Imam is struggling between life and death in a government hospital. That Imam cannot provide him medical aid because he has no resources. He said that the works that have been brought to light in the context of the Endowment Act are an attempt to highlight the status of the endowment as much as possible. When Mufti Manzoor Zia was asked what was the purpose of bringing this work to light only after the implementation of the Endowment Act, he said that the process of preparing the work related to the ownership of the endowment and its Sharia requirements was already underway.

It is a coincidence that it was released after the Endowment Act. He said that the Waqf property is reserved for Muslims but it is useless because petty thefts to corruption are common in it. He was asked whether the implementation of the Waqf Act will benefit Muslims now. He said that the matter related to the Waqf Act is under hearing in the Supreme Court, so it is too early to say anything on this right now. Congress leader Nizamuddin Rain, Anjuman Bashingan Bihar Mahmoodul Hasan Hakimi, scholars, elders of the city and dignitaries attended the function.

Mumbai: A 35-year-old employee at an Indian Oil petrol pump on Sir J.J. Road in Mumbai was allegedly attacked with a chopper by a group of four men following a petty argument. One of the accused, Moin Armaan Mohammad Gaus Shaikh (29), a second-hand clothes dealer from Wadala East, has been arrested, while three other unidentified accused remain absconding.

The incident occurred on June 27, when Moin Shaikh arrived at the petrol pump on a scooter to refuel. A minor altercation ensued between him and the complainant, Mohammad Ilyas Shaikh (35), a resident of Shivajinagar and an employee at the station. Moin allegedly threatened Ilyas before leaving the scene, only to return shortly with three accomplices—one of whom was armed with a chopper.

According to the police, the group launched a violent attack on Ilyas with the intent to kill. One of the assailants slashed the complainant’s back, while another attempted to strike near his neck. Fortunately, Ilyas dodged the blow, sustaining only superficial injuries. Another attacker, dressed in black, slapped him, while a second man in a black-and-white checkered T-shirt struck him in the face with a plastic chair, causing a nosebleed. A third assailant punched him, and another created panic among bystanders, causing them to flee the scene.

Senior officers, including Assistant Commissioner Mugutwar, Senior Inspector Kamble, and Investigation Officer Gore, visited the crime scene. The accused were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for assault, criminal intimidation, and attempted murder. CCTV footage from the petrol pump has been recovered as part of the investigation.

Moin Shaikh was arrested from his residence in Wadala East. Police records show a prior case registered against him at Wadala Police Station in 2016 under IPC Sections 324, 323, 506, and 34. The weapon used in the crime—a chopper—has yet to be recovered. The injured employee was treated as an outpatient at J.J. Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Further investigation is underway to trace the absconding accused and recover the weapon.
