Maharashtra is restless for political change: Sharad Pawar

Published

on

Nationalist Congress Party supremo Sharad Pawar said here on Monday that the people of Maharashtra are longing for a ‘political change’ and want all the Opposition parties to come together for this.

The 82-year-old leader recounted how, in the past few weeks, he has been touring different parts of the state and meeting a lot of people.

“The masses conveyed to me that they are desirous of a change in the state… They want the Opposition parties to unite and achieve this,” Pawar told mediapersons in Pune.

He also met the Congress-Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) winner Ravindra Dhangekar from the Kasba Peth seat Assembly bypoll last week — crumbling the ruling ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s 28-year-old bastion.

In this context, Pawar reiterated that the MVA allies — Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT) — will contest the next elections together in the state.

The NCP chief also admitted that he was ‘unsure’ that Dhangekar would be able to wrest the Kasba Peth seat from the BJP where the former legislator Girish Bapat had a lot of influence, but the people took note of the MVA candidate’s performance in the region.

Pawar also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the concerns voiced by the national Opposition parties in their letter on Sunday.

The eight opposition parties’ leaders Sunday shot off a letter to the PM on the misuse of central probe agencies like the ED and CBI against the non-BJP ruled states and interference of governors into routine administration.

Pawar, whose signature is affixed first in the communication to Modi, said that former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia has done commendable work in the education and other sectors, but now he is being arrested.

The letter contended that such things suggest that the country had ‘transitioned’ from being a democracy to an autocracy, how the timing of filing cases against or the arrests of the Opposition leaders ‘coincided’ with elections proving that they are politically motivated.

Along with Pawar, the much-discussed letter was signed be Telangana CM K. Chandrashekhar Rao, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, Bihar Deputy CM Tejaswi Yadav, ex-Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, former Jammu & Kashmir CM Farooq Abdullah and ex-CM of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav.

Ahilyanagar: Shani Shingnapur temple in Ahilyanagar has taken a big decision. 167 employees working at Shani Devasthan have been dismissed from work. Among the dismissed employees were 114 Muslim employees. Shani Devasthan has given an explanation that the employees were dismissed due to irregularities and non-compliance with discipline.

Meanwhile, for the past few days, Hindu organizations had been pressuring the Muslim employees to be fired. On the fourth day of Shani Dev, a protest was held on behalf of the entire Hindu community due to the work being done by Muslim people.

A warning was given that a large march would be taken out by the entire Hindu community outside the temple on June 14.

The controversy had escalated over the appointment of Muslim employees at the famous religious place Shri Kshetra Shani Shingnapur Temple in Ahilyanagar district. Hindu organizations have become aggressive against the 114 Muslim employees working at the Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust. The organization demanded that the trust immediately remove all Muslim employees from work. Otherwise, it had also warned that a big march would be taken out by the entire Hindu community outside the temple on June 14.

On May 21, 2025, Muslim craftsmen installed a grill on the holy platform of the temple and cleaned and painted the platform of Lord Shani. The matter had heated up even more then. As soon as the information about this incident came to light, the Maharashtra Temple Federation and Hindu organizations raised strong objections. After that, the temple’s board of trustees has decided to remove all Muslim employees. The temple trust had given a clarification in this regard, according to which it has admitted that 114 Muslim employees work in the trust. However, according to the trust, none of these Muslim employees are on duty in the main sanctum or on the platform of the temple. These employees are mainly working in the agriculture department, waste management department and education-related work. Out of these, 99 employees have been absent from work for the last five months and their salaries have also been stopped. The remaining 15 employees have been serving for many years, some of whom have more than 20 years of experience. Hindu organizations were aggressive in demanding the dismissal of 114 Muslim employees working at the Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust. They had also warned of taking out a protest tomorrow (June 14) in this regard.
