Maharashtra BJP Minister has ‘lost mental balance’, alleges Congress

Published

on

Distancing itself from the “ink attack” on Maharashtra Higher & Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil on Saturday, the state’s opposition Maharashtra Congress on Monday claimed that the BJP leader has lost “his mental balance”.

“We do not support that incident. But after the incident, 10 policemen have been suspended and a journalist who was covering it has been arrested. Was it necessary to impose such restrictions on the journalist?” state Congress President Nana Patole asked.

Even the Shiv Sena-UBT and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders have washed their hands off the incident which was condemned by several BJP leaders including Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday.

In a strong hit, Patole said that “Patil has lost his mental balance and needs treatment”, and targeted the state government for its “swift, vengeful action” following that incident.

“Looking at his behaviour, it seems his mental balance has been disturbed. We are worried about him, he should seek treatment from a good doctor on priority. I pray that Lord Ganesha gives wisdom to Patil and other great BJP leaders,” said Patole sarcastically.

However, Patole pointed out that the BJP was not so quick in taking action against Patil and others who have been repeatedly hurling insults at great icons of the state including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, et al, besides Opposition political leaders.

Referring to the Saturday developments after the ink-attack on him in Pune, Patil said that whatever action was taken has been done by the Police department.

NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal also took a jibe at Patil saying that nobody had ever died due to an ink attack to which the latter retorted saying if it (the ink) had gone into his eyes, it could have caused cancer.

Sena-UBT MP and chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut also said such incidents cannot be supported, while slamming Patil for his comments on the state’s great personalities.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi allies have also objected to the manner in which Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari – currently under fire for his recent utterances – shared the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Nagpur on Sunday.

Mumbai Crime: 21-Year-Old Woman Forcibly Cuts Friend’s Hair In Versova, Films Act Over Boyfriend Row; FIR Against 3

Mumbai: A 21-year-old woman allegedly cut the hair of her 20-year-old female friend by force and recorded a video of the act. She is said to have done so because her boyfriend had praised the friend’s hair. The incident occurred in Versova, Andheri West, on March 25. The Versova police registered a case against three persons on the same day.

According to the FIR, the complainant is a resident of Versova, Andheri West, and a student. Through a common friend, she became friends with a 21-year-old girl and her boyfriend. The boy used to chat with the complainant via Instagram.

During his conversations with her girlfriend, he reportedly praised the complainant’s hair and expressed a desire to meet her. However, the complainant and the boy were only friends and did not share any romantic relationship.

On March 7, the accused girl visited the complainant’s residence and checked her mobile phone. She did not find any inappropriate chats between the complainant and her boyfriend. She then thanked the complainant and left.

On March 25, the complainant was at home with her maid. The maid slept in her room. At around 12:30 am, the doorbell rang. The complainant assumed it might be her ice cream delivery. However, upon opening the door, she found the accused girl along with two female friends standing in the passage.

The accused girl allegedly pulled the complainant out of her flat and began cutting her hair with scissors, while her two friends recorded the incident.

When the complainant resisted, Layba said, “Hair, hair, not hair,” and allegedly threatened to make the video go viral. The accused told her to do whatever she wanted, took some of the cut hair with her, and left the building.

In her complaint, she stated, “Her friend and her two friends illegally entered the building and rang the doorbell. She misunderstood that I was in a relationship with her boyfriend, and cut my hair.”

The victim subsequently filed a complaint against her friend and her two friends at the Versova police station. The Versova police said that the individuals involved are known to make social media reels, and they are investigating whether the act was a stunt or carried out with any other intention.

The Versova police registered an FIR against Layba and her two unidentified friends under Sections 329(3) and 329(4) (criminal trespass and house trespass), 351(2) (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 3(5) (general explanation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Mumbai: BMC’s ₹2,500 Crore Deonar Bioremediation Project Yet To Start, Awaiting Environmental Clearances

Published

on

Mumbai: The BMC’s Rs 2,500 crore bioremediation project to treat 185 lakh tonnes of legacy waste at the Deonar dumping ground is yet to start, pending environmental clearances. The project aims to reclaim 110 hectares of land for productive use.

The contract for scientifically treating legacy waste at the Deonar dumping ground was awarded to Navayuga Engineering Ltd in September last year. The Deonar bioremediation project is one of the largest solid waste management tenders floated by the BMC in recent years.

The contract spans three years, including periods for mobilisation and monsoon. Since the site falls within an eco-sensitive zone, the project requires No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from multiple departments, including the Coastal Regulatory Zone authority.

A senior civic official said, “We are awaiting clearance from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA). An online meeting with the authority for the project was recently held, and since a few questions were raised, we are hopeful. We are now waiting for the official minutes of the meeting. Once all approvals are in place, work on the project can commence.”

The BMC aims to clear 124 acres of the 311-acre Deonar dumping ground, which currently has close to two crore tonnes of legacy waste in it.

Legacy waste is that which accumulates when uncontrolled and unregulated dumping of waste continues for decades on a barren piece of land, mostly on the outskirts, which then becomes part of a city due to urbanisation.

The 9-acre waste-to-energy plant at the Deonar dumping ground is nearing completion. “After securing all approvals, it is expected to become operational soon,” said an official.

The plant, delayed from its original October 2025 schedule due to clearance issues, will process 600 tonnes of waste daily and generate 7 MW of clean electricity, supporting Mumbai’s sustainable waste and energy goals.

Sensex, Nifty slip in early trade amid global sell-off and oil volatility

Published

Mumbai, Domestic equity benchmarks opened sharply lower on Friday, tracking weak global cues and elevated Brent crude prices amid fading hopes of a resolution to the Iran conflict.

Nifty opened at 23,173.55, down 132.90 points or 0.57 per cent, while the Sensex fell around 400 points to 74,883.79 in early trade.

Broader markets also remained under pressure, with midcap and smallcap indices traded lower.

Sectorally, most indices traded in the red, led by realty, metal, PSU banks and auto stocks, which fell up to 1 per cent. Financials and consumer durables also witnessed selling pressure.

However, IT and oil and gas stocks bucked the trend and posted modest gains.

Among heavyweights, stocks such as HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finance were among the top laggards.

Market sentiment remained cautious amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. US President Donald Trump said the pause on attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure would be extended, though uncertainty persists after Iran termed a US proposal “one-sided”.

Global markets also reflected a risk-off mood. US indices ended sharply lower, with the S&P 500 down 1.74 per cent and Nasdaq falling 2.38 per cent. Asian markets followed suit, with Japan’s Nikkei declining over 1 per cent and South Korea’s Kospi dropping around 3 per cent.

Crude oil prices remained volatile, although they eased slightly, with Brent crude falling 2.29 per cent to $105.53 per barrel, while WTI crude declined 2.54 per cent to $92.08.

According to analysts, markets are likely to remain volatile amid global uncertainties. Immediate support for Nifty is seen in the 23,050–23,000 zone, while resistance is placed around 23,450–23,500.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued to remain net sellers, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided support to the market.

Notably, Indian markets resumed trading on Friday after a holiday on Thursday on account of Ram Navami.
