LPG Crisis In Mumbai: State Govt Deploys Police Protection For Gas Supply As Shortage Triggers Black Marketing; 18 Arrested So Far
Mumbai: Amid the ongoing LPG shortage in Mumbai and surrounding regions, Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Monday informed the legislative council that the state has authorised police protection for the transportation and distribution of liquefied petroleum gas to curb rising black marketing.
Bhujbal said the move comes in response to increasing instances of illegal sale of LPG cylinders, allegedly driven by supply disruptions linked to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. So far, the state’s enforcement wing has conducted over 2,100 inspections, resulting in the registration of 23 cases and the arrest of 18 individuals involved in black marketing.
To strengthen monitoring, district collectors and regional authorities have been directed to form vigilance squads to crack down on illegal trade. The minister expressed confidence that police deployment would prevent interference in the supply chain and ensure smoother distribution of cooking gas across the state.
Despite the shortage, Bhujbal maintained that oil companies have adequate stock and that production at refineries has been increased from 9,000 metric tonnes to 11,000 metric tonnes. He also urged citizens not to panic, reiterating that the central government controls LPG supply and pricing.
Kerosene Looked As Alternative Fuel Amid LPG Shortage
As part of contingency measures, the state government is also considering supplying kerosene as an alternative fuel. The proposal was communicated to the Bombay High Court, specifically its Nagpur Bench, earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the LPG crisis has severely impacted the hospitality sector. Representatives of the Association of Hotels and Restaurants (AHAR) met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Vidhan Bhavan, seeking immediate intervention.
According to AHAR president Vijay K Shetty, many restaurants have either downsized operations or shut down entirely due to disruptions in both LPG and piped natural gas supply. Smaller establishments, in particular, are struggling to sustain operations amid rising costs and supply uncertainty.
The government has assured stakeholders that it will take up the issue with oil marketing companies and the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. In the meantime, priority in LPG supply has been given to essential services such as hospitals, educational institutions, crematoriums, old-age homes and orphanages.
The shortage, now stretching into its ninth day, continues to disrupt daily life and business activity across Mumbai and nearby districts, even as authorities attempt to stabilise supply and prevent further escalation of the crisis.

It was alleged that the accused entered into a criminal conspiracy, obtained term loan of Rs 135 crore on the invoices of its related party and diverted/siphoned off the funds for other purposes for which it was not sanctioned, causing loss to the bank, the CBI said.
During the searches on Friday, incriminating bank documents and property documents relevant to the investigation were recovered and seized.

Monsoon Withdraws Further from Maharashtra; Hot and Humid Weather Alert Issued for Konkan Region

MUMBAI PRESS — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Saturday, October 3, 2026, that the Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from parts of Maharashtra, as well as the remaining regions of North India, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
The current withdrawal line of the Southwest Monsoon passes through Harnai, Baramati, Parbhani, and Brahmapuri in Maharashtra, extending northeastward through Raipur, Ranchi, and Supaul. Weather officials stated that conditions are favorable for further retreat from most parts of Marathwada, Vidarbha, and additional areas of Madhya Maharashtra over the next 2 to 3 days.
Hot and Humid Stretch for Coastal Maharashtra
Residents in the coastal belt should prepare for elevated discomfort over the weekend. The IMD has issued a hot and humid weather warning for Konkan & Goa prevailing from October 3 through October 5.
Following this dry and muggy stretch, mild weather activity is expected to return to the region. Isolated to scattered rainfall is forecast across Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra between October 6 and October 9.
Southern and Northeastern Forecast
While monsoon forces retreat from central and northern parts of India, southern states are bracing for heavy downpours. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted over Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from October 4 to October 6, with South Interior Karnataka expected to receive heavy spells on October 5 and 6.
In the northeast, isolated heavy rainfall is expected to continue over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh through October 3.
Advisory for Fishermen
Due to lower-tropospheric cyclonic circulations over the Arabian Sea, the IMD has urged fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the Kerala coast, Lakshadweep, Maldives, and the Comorin area on October 3. Farmers in heavy rainfall zones have also been advised to ensure proper field drainage and move harvested crops to covered storage to prevent crop damage.

Mumbai Crime Branch records IIT-Bombay Prof’s statement in student suicide case; Doolla denies all charges

Mumbai, Oct 3: The Mumbai Crime Branch, which is investigating the alleged abetment to suicide case involving IIT-Bombay student Sahil Wakode, has recorded the statement of Professor Suryanarayan Doolla. The professor was questioned for approximately eight hours during which his statement was recorded. He denied all allegations levelled against him.
Wakode’s parents had said in their police complaint that Professor Doolla had harassed their son. Acting on the allegations, the Crime Branch questioned the professor about the events leading up to Wakode’s death and his interactions with the student.
During the interrogation, Professor Doolla denied all the allegations levelled against him, according to sources.
The Mumbai Crime Branch is also expected to summon IIT-Bombay Director Shireesh Kedare soon, to record his statement as part of the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, the police are examining CCTV footage from the examination hall to gather crucial information about the events and activities preceding Wakode’s death.
The Crime Branch has so far recorded statements from around 50 people, including Wakode’s parents and classmates, as part of its probe.
CCTV footage from September 18 reportedly showed Professor Doolla pulling Wakode aside after allegedly catching him using a mobile phone during an examination.
Following Wakode’s death, IIT-Bombay had said that the student had uploaded the question paper on ChatGPT to seek answers. The institute had also stated that no disciplinary action was taken against him in connection with the incident.
Wakode’s father, Ravindra Wakode, had claimed that his son told him about being discriminated against by Professor Doolla.
“My son had told me about this discrimination, but I told him that it is difficult to secure admission to IIT and advised him to bear with it,” he had told reporters.
Mumbai Police subsequently registered a case of abetment to suicide based on a complaint lodged by Wakode’s father.
The IIT-Bombay faculty, however, came out in support of Professor Doolla, stating that he was being targeted for merely performing his professional duties.
“The student indulged in malpractice during the examination. Prof Doolla reported the matter to the head of the department. If a professor is being vilified just for discharging his duties, then it is a problem for the entire teaching community in the country,” said Prof Rajkumar Pant, chief of the IIT-Bombay Faculty Forum.
