Kurla BEST Bus Accident: Driver Sent To Police Custody Till Dec 21 After Crash Kills 7, Injures 42

Mumbai, Dec 10: A Mumbai court on Tuesday remanded the driver of the BEST bus involved in an accident, which claimed seven lives and left 42 others injured, to police custody till December 21. The driver, Sanjay More, has been booked for ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’, a day after the horrific crash.

The bus operated by the civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking hit several vehicles and pedestrians at around 9.30 pm on Monday on the SG Barve Marg in Kurla (West).

More, who was at the wheel of the bus, was detained after the accident and later arrested under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The police produced him before a magistrate court’s and sought his remand for further probe into the accident. The court allowed the police plea and sent More to their custody till December 21.

Keeping this in mind, the possibility of trees or branches falling during strong winds cannot be ruled out, so citizens should avoid standing under trees during rains. There is a high chance of trees falling or branches breaking during strong winds and rains. Therefore, the Parks Department has appealed to citizens to avoid standing under trees as much as possible while avoiding rain. In this regard, the Parks Department has created awareness by displaying information booklets at various places in Mumbai city, eastern and western suburbs. Regarding dangerous trees in Mumbai, Parks Superintendent Jitendra Pardeshi said that Mumbai residents should contact the Parks Department at the department office (ward) or contact the civil service number 1916, which appear dangerous in the premises of buildings and housing societies, in the vicinity and along the roads. He has also appealed to Mumbai residents to obtain necessary permission for felling of dangerous trees in the premises of their buildings and societies and avoid possible danger.

Maharashtra FDA Issues Comprehensive Compliance Order for Hotels and Restaurants Across State

Mumbai: In a significant move aimed at strengthening food safety and public health standards, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Maharashtra, has issued a comprehensive compliance order applicable to hotels, restaurants, eateries, and all food service establishments across the state.

The order, issued by the Commissioner of the Maharashtra FDA, reiterates that every food business operator must strictly adhere to the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the regulations framed under it. It emphasizes that consumers have a fundamental right to receive safe, wholesome, and unadulterated food.

According to the order, inspections conducted by the department have revealed instances of non-compliance in several food establishments, prompting the need for stricter enforcement and uniform standards across the hospitality sector.

The directive highlights the responsibility of restaurants and hotels to maintain hygienic food preparation practices, comply with licensing and registration requirements, ensure proper storage and handling of ingredients, and follow prescribed standards relating to packaging, labelling, contaminants, and food additives.

The FDA has also stressed that public health protection is a constitutional obligation and that food service operators must play an active role in safeguarding consumers from unsafe or adulterated food.

Officials have indicated that compliance with the order will be closely monitored, and violations may invite regulatory action under the Food Safety and Standards Act and related rules.

The move is expected to enhance food safety standards across Maharashtra and reinforce accountability among food businesses while protecting the interests of millions of consumers who dine at hotels and restaurants every day.
