India logs 1,574 new Covid cases, 9 deaths

 In the last 24 hours, India reported 1,574 new Covid-19 cases and nine deaths, the Union Health Ministry announced on Saturday.

The new fatalities increased the nationwide death toll to 5,29,008 as per the report.

The active caseload at 18,802 accounted for 0.04 per cent of the country’s total positive cases.

The recovery of 2,161 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,41,02,852. Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.77 per cent.

Meanwhile, the daily and weekly positivity rates stood at 0.95 per cent and 1.11 per cent, respectively.

Also in the same period, a total of 1,65,901 tests were conducted across the country, increasing the overall tally to over 90.07 crore.

As of Saturday morning, India’s Covid-19 vaccination coverage exceeded 219.62 crore.

Two Arrested in Malvani for Printing Fake Indian Currency Notes

In a major breakthrough, Malvani Police from Zone XI have arrested two individuals involved in the printing and circulation of counterfeit Indian currency notes. The accused were apprehended from the Malvani area of Malad (West), Mumbai, following a tip-off received by Senior Police Inspector Dr. Deepak Hinge.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the police raided a rented room near Sai Baba Mandir in Malvani’s Gate No. 8 on 29th May 2025 around 10:30 PM. The operation was led by a special team comprising Crime Detection Unit officers and beat marshals from Malvani Police Station.

During the raid, the police seized a total of 1,000 fake notes in ₹500 denomination, amounting to a face value of ₹5,00,000. In addition, they confiscated tools used in the counterfeiting operation, including a laptop, printer, cutter, ink, and blank note paper. Police estimate the material could have been used to print up to ₹23,30,000 in fake currency.

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  1. Sampat Saamarya Ujjanpalli (Age 46), originally from Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra.
  2. Hasimoddin Gafur Sheikh (Age 30), resident of Ghansawangi, Jalna district, Maharashtra.

Both individuals have been booked under IPC Sections 489A, 489C, 489D, 34, and other relevant provisions for counterfeiting currency and are currently in police custody.

Senior officials from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), including senior police inspectors and crime detection teams, played a crucial role in guiding the investigation.

Malvani Police are continuing further investigations to trace other individuals possibly involved in this fake currency network and to understand if there are any links to organized crime syndicates.

Mumbai: 27-year-old engineer Ravinder Verma, arrested by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad, had provided many important information to Pakistan. He was in contact with Pakistani agent Pakistan Intelligence Operative PIO on Facebook and WhatsApp. The accused had provided many important information including naval submarine to Pakistan. He was living in a rented house in Thane. Before social media, a Pakistani girl befriended him and then he got caught in the trap of honey trap. The court has ordered to keep the accused on 15-day police remand.

Many sensitive information has also been found from his social media account, which he has given to Pakistan. He was in contact with two Facebook accounts. The Thane court has ordered to keep him in police custody till June 2. The accused was arrested in a case under the Official Secrets Act. A Pakistani agent and an Indian citizen are also involved in this case, whose search is on. ATS and central agencies are jointly investigating. Sources say that the accused arrested in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh have also been victims of honey trap. The details of Ravinder Verma’s mobile phone, laptop and social media account are also being investigated and it is being ascertained how many people he was in contact with and how much information he has shared so far.
