Equities settle high after crash on Monday; Sensex up over 350 pts
After a bloodbath in the Indian equity segment on Monday due to continued selling-off pressure by foreign institutional investors, the market on Tuesday recovered its losses, though marginally.
Sensex settled 0.6 per cent or by 366 points higher at 57,858 points, whereas Nifty is 0.8 per cent up or by 128 at 17,277 points.
Barring Nifty IT index, all the others traded in the green during the intra-day trade. Nifty bank, auto, media, PSU bank, and realty indices rose the most, NSE data showed.
On the stocks front, Maruti Suzuki India, Axis Bank, SBI, Indusind Bank, and UPL were the top five gainers, rising 7.4 per cent, 6.5 per cent, 3.9 per cent, 3.6 per cent, and 3.5 per cent, respectively. Wipro, Bajaj Finserv, Titan, Ultratech Cement, Tech Mahindra were the top five losers during the session.
“After a week-long consolidation, domestic indices took a breather supported by low-level buying. Western markets also supported staging recovery following correction in oil markets, and as uncertainties over Fed policy and geopolitical tensions eased,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.
“However, volatility is expected to linger as investors await the Fed’s final policy statement, providing clarity on the timeline of rate hikes. If the statement is as hawkish as anticipated, we cannot ignore a bounce in the market.”

TN announces Rs 2 per kg incentive for cooperative ration shop onion sales

Salespersons at ration shops run by cooperative societies will receive an incentive of Rs 2 for every kilogram of onions sold under an initiative aimed at controlling retail prices and ensuring access to quality produce at reasonable rates.
The incentive was announced in a procedural order issued by Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Latha. It recognises the additional responsibilities undertaken by salespersons handling onion distribution alongside their regular ration shop duties.
According to the order, onions were procured in three phases from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF). The procurement was undertaken to help check rising onion prices in the open market. The onions are being sold to the public through ration shops operated by cooperative societies.
The arrangement is intended to make quality onions available at fair prices while using the existing cooperative distribution network to reach consumers.
Under the order, the incentive payable to each salesperson will depend on the quantity of onions sold. The prescribed rate is Rs 2 per kilogram, linking payment directly to the volume handled through sales at the participating shops.
The Registrar’s order lists several additional tasks associated with the initiative. These include receiving onion consignments, storing the produce, sorting it, weighing quantities for customers, conducting sales and maintaining the related sales accounts. These responsibilities involve work beyond the routine distribution of ration commodities.
The incentive is intended to encourage salespersons to undertake the additional duties required to carry out onion sales through cooperative outlets. The amount due to eligible salespersons will be credited directly to their bank accounts through the Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), according to the order.
Payments will therefore be made through bank transfers based on the quantity sold. The measure combines consumer relief with an incentive for the staff responsible for implementing the sales programme.
While the procurement and distribution arrangement seeks to contain the impact of higher market prices, the additional payment acknowledges the work involved at the retail level. The order specifies a uniform incentive rate for onion sales conducted through the participating cooperative ration shops.

FPIs are selling but Indian equities not under foreign-investor stress

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) net sold about Rs 8,990 crore in the Indian markets last week, with a welcome, but modest, Rs 1,166 crore of buying on the last trading day.
On the provisional exchange data, FPIs sold Rs 1,708 crore on Monday, Rs 1,305 crore on Tuesday, Rs 1,857 crore on Wednesday and a hefty Rs 5,285 crore on Thursday.
However, the Friday’s buying also snapped a 15-session selling streak that had started on September 24. Over that stretch, FPIs had sold roughly Rs 84,000 crore on provisional numbers.
“October’s settled equity outflow has now reached about Rs 52,100 crore, already well above September’s Rs 35,861 crore, with two weeks of the month still to go. Calendar-2026 FPI equity outflows are now well over the rs 3 lakh crore mark,” said Dheeraj Gaur, Chief Investment Strategy Officer, Choice Wealth.
The primary-market cushion has also become thinner. September had provided a much needed offset, with strong foreign participation in primary issues.
Comparatively, October so far, has been much quieter, said the analyst.
“There is, however, one striking disconnect: FPIs are selling, but Indian equities are not behaving like a market under foreign-investor stress,” analysts noted.
The Nifty gained 2.8 per cent over the week to 23,146, while the Sensex rose 3.1 per cent. Nifty IT was the standout, jumping 11.7 per cent on optimism around AI-related revenues and technology earnings.
Domestic institutions once again played the shock absorber, buying heavily even as foreign investors continued to reduce exposure.
The IMF’s upward revision of India’s GDP growth forecasts for FY27 and FY28 reinforced confidence in the resilience of the domestic economy.
However, elevated crude level, rising retail and wholesale inflation, mixed global cues and persistent foreign fund outflows remained key concerns, according to market watchers.
Overall, optimism around domestic growth helped markets advance despite mounting inflationary pressures and global uncertainties. IT emerged as the standout performer on robust earnings and upbeat management commentary.

Nifty, Sensex see firm recovery after RBI’s support to rupee

Indian equity benchmarks posted a firm recovery, sustaining gains for the second week as investors looked past early inflation worries, especially after the central bank’s special dollar window for oil marketing companies helped the rupee rebound.
Nifty added 2.78 per cent during the week and gained 0.65 per cent on the last trading day to reach 23,146.
At close, Sensex was up 413 points or 0.56 per cent at 74,729. It gained 3.11 per cent during the week.
Market sentiment was dented earlier in the week by consumer inflation hovering near the upper end of the Reserve Bank of India’s tolerance band and a hotter‑than‑expected wholesale price index print that pushed benchmark bond yields to multi‑year highs.
The central bank raised the daily cash reserve ratio maintenance requirement to absorb surplus liquidity, adding to caution. Market confidence, however, improved after the central bank’s special dollar window for oil marketing companies and tighter hedging norms drove a rupee-rebound, analysts said.
“Expectations of a review of LTCG tax and STT, softer crude prices and easing bond yields further revived risk appetite, prompting investors to tilt towards counters with strong Q2FY27 business updates, though the rally remained concentrated in large-caps, with mid-caps posting modest gains and small-caps ending marginally lower,” they added.
“Participants should remain selective, maintain disciplined position sizing and favour a hedged approach amid elevated macroeconomic and earnings-related uncertainty,” the experts said.
Information technology (IT) sector emerged as the standout performer on robust earnings and upbeat management commentary, while healthcare and pharmaceuticals lagged as investors favoured sectors with stronger near-term earnings visibility.
Meanwhile, fast‑moving consumer goods stocks came under pressure amid concerns over margin compression from elevated input costs.
Broad market indices performed largely in line with the benchmark indices as Nifty Midcap100 added 0.58 per cent and Nifty Smallcap100 dipped 0.12 per cent during the week.
In addition, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net buyers of Rs 11.66 billion in Indian equities on Friday after overall selling eased sharply this week as market sentiment improved.
FIIs remained net sellers for the ninth straight week but their weekly selling moderated to Rs 89.91 billion from Rs 302.94 billion the previous week. On the other hand, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) stayed net buyers for a ninth consecutive week at Rs 78.13 billion, though they were net sellers of Rs 36.61 billion on Friday.
The sustainability of the recovery will hinge on earnings growth broadening beyond IT with revenue and margin delivery across financials, consumption and industrials under close scrutiny, analysts said.
Investors are keen on India’s October PMI that will offer insight into domestic demand momentum, while US jobless claims and Japan’s inflation print will shape global rate expectations.
