Channi has no knowledge of Bihar, says Nitish Kumar

Published

Continuing his attack on Punjab Chief Minister Charanjeet Singh Channi, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Friday said that Channi has no knowledge of Bihar.

Nitish Kumar claimed that the Congress party gave a chance to a person who has no knowledge of Bihar and Bihari people.

“Sikh’s 10th Guru Shri Guru Govind Singh Maharaj birthplace is in Bihar. A large number of Punjabi community people come from across the world to Patna Sahib and every Bihari welcomes them. We always showed respect to the Punjabi people. We have also organised a grand programme during the 350th lights festival (Prakash Utsav) in 2017 in Patna Sahib. He (Channi) has no knowledge of it,” Kumar said.

“We have lots of love and respect for Punjabi people. We have begun a place of worship out of respect for Shri Gurunanak Dev Ji Maharaj in Rajgir and I personally look after the development of the place,” he said.

“The contribution of Bihari people in Punjab is immense. When Punjabi people go abroad, the people of Bihar look after their properties and farming. Bihari people have huge contribution in the agriculture sector, construction sector and industries which Channi does not know. I am surprised at how the Congress party made him chief minister of the state. With that statement, he has damaged his own party position in Punjab,” Kumar said.

Addressing a rally for the Punjab Assembly polls scheduled to be held on February 20, Channi had said Priyanka Gandhi is the daughter-in-law of Punjab and people of the state should give her a chance. Punjabis should unite and oust the ‘bhaiye’ who come from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi to rule in the state.

Meanwhile, Channi claimed that his statement has been twisted by the opposition parties and the media.

“My statement was against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Durgesh Pathak and Sanjay Singh who came from outside and are creating a disturbance. My statement is not for the common people of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan who come to Punjab for work. Their contribution in the making of Punjab is immense and I have great respect for them,” Channi said in his video statement.

“We all are migrant people and we have equal rights on the land of Punjab. A large number of Punjabi people are also working in other states and in other countries,” Channi said.

Mumbai: Public Holiday On September 8? Here’s What We Know So far

Mumbai: In a move to ensure the smooth celebration of two major festivals, the Maharashtra government has shifted the public holiday for Eid-e-Milad in Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts, shifting it from Friday, September 5, to Monday, September 8, 2025.

The announcement was made through an official notification issued by the Department of General Administration on Wednesday. The decision comes in response to the back-to-back scheduling of Eid-e-Milad and Anant Chaturdashi, which fall on September 5 and 6, respectively, this year.

The official notification, issued in the name of the Governor of Maharashtra and signed by Dilip Deshpande, Deputy Secretary, described the decision as being made “in the spirit of brotherhood” to ensure both Hindu and Muslim communities can celebrate peacefully.

In light of the large-scale celebrations and processions related to both Anant Chaturdashi and Eid-e-Milad, the decision to reschedule the public holiday in Mumbai reflects a thoughtful and cooperative approach to managing public events. By adjusting the date of the Eid-e-Milad procession and holiday to avoid overlap with Anant Chaturdashi, the government and community leaders have demonstrated a commitment to maintaining public order, respecting religious sentiments, and fostering communal harmony.

In other news stories related to the Anant Chaturdashi in Mumbai, to manage the anticipated rise in passenger traffic during Ganpati immersions on Anant Chaturdashi, Western Railway (WR) has announced significant changes to local train operations at Charni Road station on Saturday, September 6. The adjustments are intended to facilitate smoother crowd movement near Girgaon Chowpatty, one of Mumbai’s major immersion sites.

“To accommodate thousands of devotees heading to the seaside for the final day of Ganesh visarjan, WR will operate 12 additional special local train services between Churchgate and Virar during the night of September 6 and 7,” said an official.

Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge Slams Modi Govt For Delay In GST Reforms, Calls Simplification Long Overdue

Published

on

New Delhi: Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday criticised the Modi government over the delay in implementing GST reforms, saying it was a “good thing” that the Centre has finally “woken up” after eight years, even as he asserted that the Opposition had consistently demanded the simplification of indirect taxes.

The GST Council has recently cleared sweeping changes in the tax regime, reducing the number of slabs and cutting rates on a wide range of essential goods and services.

Under the revised framework, two primary slabs of 5 per cent and 18 per cent will remain, along with a higher 40 per cent rate for sin goods. Goods earlier taxed at 12 per cent and 28 per cent will largely shift into the two main slabs, with the government claiming this will ease the burden on households.

Reacting to the move, Kharge took to X and posted, “For nearly a decade, the Indian National Congress has been demanding the simplification of GST. The Modi government turned ‘One Nation, One Tax’ into ‘One Nation, 9 Taxes.’ Which included Tax Slabs of 0 per cent, 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent, 28 per cent and special rates of 0.25 per cent, 1.5 per cent, 3 per cent, and 6 per cent.”

He said the Congress had already proposed GST 2.0 with a “simple and rational” tax system in its 2019 and 2024 manifestos and had demanded simplification of GST compliances, which, he stated, had “severely affected” MSMEs and small businesses.

Kharge recalled that the idea of GST was first introduced by the Congress-UPA government in 2005, and when the GST Bill was presented in 2011 by then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, it was opposed by the BJP.

“When Modi Ji was the Chief Minister, he vehemently opposed GST,” he added.

Kharge accused the present government of hypocrisy, saying, “Today, the same BJP government celebrates record GST collections, as if collecting tax from the common people was some great achievement.”

He further claimed that “for the first time in the country’s history,” taxes were imposed on farmers.

“This Modi government had imposed GST on at least 36 items in the agricultural sector. Milk-curd, flour-grains, and even children’s pencils, books, oxygen, insurance, and hospital expenses — on everyday things like these, the Modi government has imposed GST tax. That’s why we named this BJP’s GST the ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’,” he said.

Kharge also stated that the burden of GST is disproportionately borne by ordinary citizens.

“Two-thirds of the total GST, i.e., 64 per cent, comes from the pockets of the poor and middle class, but only 3 per cent of GST is collected from billionaires, while the Corporate Tax rate has been reduced from 30 per cent to 22 per cent,” he professed.

Highlighting revenue trends, he asserted that in the last five years, there has been a 240 per cent rise in Income Tax collection and a 177 per cent increase in GST collection.

“It is a good thing that, even if 8 years late, the Modi government’s ‘Kumbhakarniya’ sleep regarding GST has finally broken, and they have spoken about Rate Rationalisation upon waking,” Kharge stated.

The Congress President also demanded that states be fully compensated for five years, taking 2024-25 as the base year, given the likelihood of reduced revenues due to lower tax rates.

“The complex Compliances of GST must also be eliminated; only then will MSMEs and small industries truly benefit,” he said.
