Accused in Saif Ali Khan stabbing case files bail plea, claims innocence

Published

Mumbai, March 29: Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, the accused in the stabbing of Bollywood superstar Saif Ali Khan, has filed a bail petition in the Mumbai Sessions Court, asserting that he is innocent and the case against him is fabricated.

The attack took place in the early hours of January 16 when the accused allegedly entered Saif’s Bandra residence through his youngest son Jeh’s room.

The actor, who was reportedly trying to fend off the assailant, suffered multiple stab wounds. Despite his injuries, Saif managed to go to the hospital on his own, accompanied by his son Taimur.

Shariful Islam Shahzad’s petition, filed through his lawyer, claims that the FIR was wrongly registered and that he has fully cooperated with the police investigation.

His legal team argues that since all evidence is already in police custody, there is no risk of tampering, and therefore, he should be granted bail.

Currently, the case is being handled by the Bandra Magistrate Court, but it falls under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Sessions Court. Once the police file a charge sheet, the case will be transferred to the Sessions Court. However, the charge sheet is yet to be filed.

According to media reports, doctors removed a 2.5-inch knife from Saif’s wound. The actor sustained six stab injuries, two of which were serious as they were near his spine.

The incident reportedly occurred around 2:15 am on January 16 when the accused broke into the house, attacked the house help, and then stabbed Saif when he intervened.

Saif was alerted by noises from Jeh’s room, where he found the accused in an altercation with the house help. Attempting to protect the staff, Saif fought off the intruder with his bare hands before being stabbed multiple times.

Investigations have revealed that the accused, a Bangladeshi national, intended to rob a wealthy individual to finance his mother’s medical treatment in his home country. He has a history of petty theft and was previously dismissed from restaurants in Worli and Thane for stealing.

It is also reported that the attacker was unaware of Saif Ali Khan’s celebrity status and targeted the residence purely because it was located in an upscale apartment complex.

Mumbai Railway Tragedy: No FIR Registered Yet In Sandhurst Road Accident After 5 Days; GRP Cites Legal Review And Ongoing Probe

Published

Mumbai: Five days after the Sandhurst Road railway accident, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has yet to register an FIR in the case. Officials said that statements of witnesses and injured passengers are being recorded. However, sources revealed that no statements from railway employees have been taken so far.

As earlier reported by The Free Press Journal, the GRP has adopted a “wait and watch” approach in the investigation, saying further action will be taken after reviewing all evidence and testimonies

The accident occurred on November 6 at Sandhurst Road railway station, in which two commuters died and three others sustained injuries. The incident led to an agitation by railway employees protesting against the GRP’s decision to lodge an FIR against two Central Railway engineers in connection with the June 9 Mumbra mishap that claimed five lives.

Union members from the Central Railway Mazdoor Sangh staged a demonstration at CSMT, allegedly blocking the motormen’s lobby, which resulted in train services being stalled.

Police sources said that walking on railway tracks is an offence under the Indian Railways Act; hence, the GRP is proceeding with caution in its investigation and is also seeking legal opinion on whether charges of negligence or culpable homicide not amounting to murder may apply.

A relative of one of the injured commuters said, “The police recorded my and my brother’s statements.” He further added that due to the strike, local trains were halted for a long time, compelling passengers to get off the train. “No one was willing to walk on the tracks, but the situation forced commuters to do so,” he said.

Meanwhile, injured passenger Hafiza Chougle is now out of danger and has started responding to treatment. Her ventilator has also been removed, confirmed her son Saif.

In the accident, Haley Momaiya (19), a resident of Matunga, and Surykant Naik (68), a resident of Nagpur, lost their lives. The injured include Hafiza Chougle (60), her son Kaif (22), both residents of Mumbra, and Haley’s aunt, Khushbu Momaiya.

NIA files charge sheet against 2 in Vizianagaram terror conspiracy case

New Delhi, Nov 11: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against two accused in an Andhra Pradesh and Telangana terror conspiracy case, an official said on Tuesday.

The two accused, identified as Siraz Ur Rahiman of Vizianagaram (Andhra Pradesh) and Syed Sameer of Hyderabad (Telangana), were arrested by the Andhra Pradesh Police on May 16 and May 17, 2025, respectively.

The chargesheet, filed against them before the NIA Special Court, Visakhapatnam, names them for their involvement in radicalising and preparing gullible youth across India through social media platforms to carry out terrorist attacks at various places in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and across the country.

Siraz Ur Rahiman and Syed Sameer have been charged under various sections of the BNS, Explosive Substances Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The NIA, which took over the case from Andhra Pradesh Police, collected sufficient evidence establishing that the accused were inspired by ISIS ideology and were actively involved in spreading radical content through various social media groups and channels, targeting hundreds of gullible youths across India with the intent to incite them towards violent jihad and anti-national activities.

The NIA investigations revealed that the accused had created several social media groups on platforms such as Instagram and Signal, which were used to promote unlawful activities threatening the unity, integrity, security and communal harmony of the country.

The NIA continues to investigate the conspiracy to spread extremist propaganda and promote radicalisation, said a statement.

In a separate development, two more accused have been sentenced to Simple Imprisonment (SI) in the Pakistan-linked Visakhapatnam Navy espionage case by a Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), an official said on Tuesday.

The NIA Special Court at Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) has sentenced Kalavalapalli Konda Babu of Visakhapatnam District (Andhra Pradesh) and Aviansh Somal of Kangra District (Himachal Pradesh) to 5 years and 10 months of SI under each of sections 18 of UA(P) Act and section 3 of the Official Secrets Act.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each, and in the event of default of payment, the accused persons will have to undergo an additional one-year SI in the case, said an NIA statement.
