New Delhi, Feb 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged residents of Delhi-NCR to stay calm and follow safety precautions after strong earthquake tremors were felt in the early hours of the day.

Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.”

The tremors, measuring a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale, struck the region at around 5:36 a.m., causing panic among residents. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported the earthquake had a depth of 5 kilometres.

The earthquake hit at a latitude of 28.59 North and longitude of 77.16 East, with the impact felt across various parts of the National Capital Region (NCR), including Delhi, Noida, Indirapuram, and surrounding areas.

The NCS confirmed the tremors in a social media post, stating: “EQ of M: 4.0, On: 17/02/2025 05:36:55 IST, Lat: 28.59 N, Long: 77.16 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: New Delhi, Delhi.”

Although the tremors lasted only a few seconds, their intensity was enough to unsettle residents. People in the affected areas reported feeling a sudden jolt, prompting many to take immediate safety measures, such as evacuating buildings and seeking shelter.

While no significant damage or casualties have been reported as of yet, authorities have assured that they are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as needed.

However, Delhi-NCR falls under Seismic Zone IV, so the region remains susceptible to moderate to strong earthquakes. Residents are urged to stay alert and follow safety protocols during such events.

Palestine’s Ambassador to India, Abdullah Abu Shawesh, met members of pro-Palestinian groups at a meeting organised by the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Parel on Sunday.

Shawesh said the Palestinian administration supported ongoing efforts to bring peace to Gaza and did not endorse the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israeli civilians. He also offered a historical perspective, rejecting Israel’s claim that the land historically belonged solely to Jews, and clarified that the Palestinian struggle was not religious but territorial, involving multiple communities including Christians and Jews.

Zeenat Shaukat Ali, director general of the Wisdom Foundation, attended the event, where the envoy highlighted India’s long-standing support for Palestinian rights since the time of Mahatma Gandhi. He mentioned that India has pledged to construct a hospital in Gaza once rebuilding begins.

On Monday, Shawesh posted on ‘X’ about his Mumbai engagements, thanking CPI leaders, AITUC members, and hosts for their solidarity and commitment to Palestine. He also praised India’s Ministry of External Affairs for being available to the Palestinian mission around the clock.

‘No One’s Share Will Be Taken Away’: Bawankule Reaffirms Govt’s Commitment To OBC Reservation

Published

on

Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Monday reaffirmed the state government’s firm stance on the issue of OBC reservation, assuring that “no one’s rightful share will be taken away and given to someone else.”

Responding to questions about differing opinions among three major leaders on the matter, Bawankule clarified that the Government Resolution (GR) issued on September 2 is currently sub judice.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further as the matter is before the court. However, it is important to note that the Hyderabad Gazette applies only to the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, not to Western Maharashtra. Therefore, the Maratha-Kunbi community from that region cannot benefit from it,” he explained.

Appealing to OBC leaders not to misunderstand the government’s intentions, Bawankule said, “Everyone can be assured that no one’s share will be diverted to another. The government remains committed to protecting the rights of all communities.”

He reiterated that the Mahayuti government is focused on maintaining social balance and ensuring that the interests of OBCs remain safeguarded while addressing concerns of other communities.

Switching focus to regional development, Bawankule shared details of an important meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss growth plans for Nagpur rural areas, NMRDA (Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority), and Nagpur city.

“A significant meeting was held under the Chief Minister’s chairmanship to discuss development in Nagpur’s rural and urban areas. Several major decisions were taken to accelerate overall growth,” he said.

Bawankule added that the meeting focused on ensuring that the benefits of various government schemes reach citizens efficiently, with a strong push for infrastructure and public welfare initiatives.

“The decisions taken today will give a strong boost to development works across the Nagpur region,” he stated.
