As BJP crosses majority mark in Delhi, Omar takes a veiled dig at AAP, Congress

New Delhi, Feb 8: In a veiled jibe at INDIA bloc allies AAP and Congress after early trends indicated the BJP had crossed the halfway mark in the Delhi Assembly elections, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday quipped that the two opposition parties should fight some more and finish each other off.
Taking to social media platform X, the National Conference leader shared a GIF which said: “Aur lado, jee bhar ke lado, samapt kar do ek dusre ko (Fight…fight to your heart’s content, finish each other off)”.
The Congress and the AAP which fought the Lok Sabha elections unitedly under the INDIA bloc chose to go it alone in the Delhi Assembly polls and did not hesitate to attack each other to the extent of dubbing each other as BJP’s “B-team”.
Last month, when the Congress and AAP announced they would go solo in the Delhi polls, the NC leader said there was no clarity about the INDIA bloc or its leadership and that it should be withdrawn if it was just formed for the general elections.
NC, a key constituent of the INDIA bloc largely remained “neutral” for the Delhi elections, unlike other allies Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) who are openly vouching and rallying support for the AAP.
The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said he cannot say anything about the AAP and Congress’ decision as he has nothing to do with the Delhi polls.
He had also expressed disappointment over zero clarity on INDIA bloc leadership, the lack of no meetings and its very existence.
Earlier, Abdullah called for a “strategy shift” in the INDIA bloc in a time-bound manner, failing which the purpose of the alliance will be defeated.
“If we continue on this path of division, it won’t bode well for the future of the INDIA Bloc,” he said.
After the initial rounds of counting, trends indicate the BJP crossed the majority mark leading on 42 seats, and the AAP on 28.

Cong flop show in Delhi: Knocked out of top 3 slots in 3 constituencies

New Delhi, Feb 8: As the counting for the Delhi Assembly elections nears its conclusion, the Congress party, once a dominant force in the national Capital, appears set for yet another electoral washout, failing to win even a single seat this term.
The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years from 1998 to 2013, is now staring at its fourth straight defeat in Assembly elections, underscoring its sharp decline in influence across the city.
This time, the party’s struggle was particularly evident in three key Assembly seats — Mehrauli, Okhla, and Mustafabad.
In Mustafabad, BJP candidate Mohan Singh Bisht emerged victorious with a lead of over 17,000 votes. The AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan secured second place, while AIMIM candidate Tahir Hussain — former AAP Councillor and a key accused in the 2020 Delhi riots — finished third. Congress candidate Ali Mehdi was left trailing far behind.
In Mehrauli, the BJP’s Gajender Singh Yadav maintained a lead, with the AAP’s Mahender Chaudhary in second place.
An Independent candidate, Balyogi Baba Balaknath, was in third place, while Congress candidate Pushpa Singh lagged at fourth place, with only two rounds of counting left.
Mehrauli is part of the South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, which comprises nine other Assembly segments, including Bijwasan, Sangam Vihar, Ambedkar Nagar, Chhatarpur, Deoli, Kalkaji, Tughlakabad, Palam, and Badarpur. The BJP is leading in six of these seats.
In Okhla, AAP’s Amanatullah Khan maintained a strong lead of over 30,000 votes. AIMIM candidate Shifa Ur Rehman Khan was in second place, followed by BJP’s Manish Chaudhary.
Congress candidate Ariba Khan trailed at fourth, with eight rounds of counting remaining.
Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit, contesting from the New Delhi Assembly seat, admitted to the party’s poor performance, calling it “disappointing” and acknowledging that Congress had failed to reconnect with Delhi’s voters.
“We had hoped for 12-13 per cent of the vote share, but we fell short. We wanted to make a place for Congress in the hearts of the people but failed. It is disappointing,” Dikshit told media.
Asked about the reasons behind the Congress’ dismal showing, he said, “It is difficult to pinpoint right now. Maybe people wanted to vote for the Congress but were unsure if we could form a government, so they chose other parties instead.”
Dikshit was in a three-way battle in New Delhi against AAP National Convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the BJP’s Parvesh Verma, who won the seat.
As counting continues, early trends from the Election Commission of India (ECI) show the BJP crossing the halfway mark, leading in 48 of Delhi’s 70 Assembly seats, while the AAP is ahead in 22. The Congress, however, remains absent from the tally.
Exit Polls had predicted a significant loss for the AAP, with the BJP expected to win between 45-55 seats. The Congress was projected to win just one seat but has failed to achieve even that.
The party’s failure to open its account once again underscores its declining relevance in Delhi politics. Once a formidable force under former Chief Minister late Sheila Dikshit, the Congress has been struggling to regain lost ground since the AAP’s rise in 2013.
Early trends initially showed the Congress leading in Badli, but this advantage quickly dissipated. With no leads in any constituency, the party is poised for another electoral wipeout.
The poor performance comes despite a high-profile campaign led by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, who held multiple rallies in the run-up to the elections.
The Congress’ vote share has also been on a downward trajectory. The last time it won seats in Delhi was in 2013 when it secured eight constituencies. That election also marked the AAP’s debut, which disrupted the city’s political landscape.
In 2015, the Congress drew a blank, managing only a 9 per cent vote share, while AAP swept 67 out of 70 seats. The BJP won the remaining three.
The downward spiral continued in 2020, with Congress again failing to win a single seat and its vote share dropping below 5 per cent. AAP retained power with 62 seats, while the BJP managed just eight.
As the BJP celebrates its return to power in Delhi and AAP grapples with a significant setback, Congress’ continued decline raises serious questions about its future in the national Capital.

Fight against BJP will continue: Atishi after winning from Kalkaji

New Delhi, Feb 8: Delhi’s outgoing Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Atishi has secured victory from the Kalkaji Assembly constituency, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by over 3,000 votes.
Extending gratitude to the people of her constituency Atishi remarked, “I want to thank the people of the Kalkaji Assembly for placing their trust in me.”
“I also want to express my gratitude to my entire team, who worked tirelessly at the grassroots level, enduring muscle power, hooliganism, and violence to reach out to the people. The mandate of the people of Delhi is clear, and we accept it. This is not a time for victory; this is a time for battle and the fight against BJP will continue,” she added.
However, despite her win, AAP is trailing in the overall election trends.
Meanwhile, as per the latest trends, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 47 out of 70 seats, positioning itself to secure a majority, while AAP is trailing with 23 seats. The results signal a major political shift in Delhi, with BJP making significant gains in AAP’s stronghold.
Earlier in the day AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal conceded defeat as election results showed the BJP securing a clear majority in the Delhi Assembly elections.
Kejriwal, who lost his New Delhi constituency seat to BJP’s Parvesh Verma, accepted the verdict with humility and extended congratulations to the winning party, the BJP.
“The election results for Delhi are out, and we humbly accept the people’s verdict. The decision of the public is paramount, and we respect it with all our heart,” Kejriwal said in a video message.
He congratulated the BJP for its victory and expressed hope that the party would fulfill the expectations of the people.

Milkipur Bypoll: Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav Accuses BJP Of ‘Misusing’ Electoral Machinery
![](https://mumbaipress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Untitled-1-2025-02-08T162426.586.webp)
Lucknow: Accusing the BJP of “misusing” the electoral machinery to win elections, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said, “The true victory of PDA in Ayodhya in the Lok Sabha elections is many times greater than their false victory in the Milkipur Assembly and will always be so.” In a post on X, Yadav also said, “The BJP cannot face the growing power of PDA on the basis of votes, that is why it tries to win by misusing the electoral machinery.
“The level of manipulation of officials required to carry out such electoral fraud may be possible in one assembly constituency, but this ‘chaar sau beesee’ (apparently referring to cheating) will not work in 403 assembly constituencies. The BJP members also know this, that is why the BJP members postponed the bye-election of Milkipur,” he said.
Akhilesh Yadav Mocks BJP’s Milkipur Win As ‘False Victory’
“This is a false victory, which the BJP will never be able to celebrate by looking into their own eyes in the mirror. Their guilt and the fear of future defeat will keep them awake,” Yadav said.
The officials who have committed the crime of electoral fraud will be punished sooner or later, Yadav said.
“The BJP will use them and then let them go, they will not become their shield. When they lose their jobs and pension, they will alone suffer the punishment of a life of humiliation among their children, family and society,” he said.
The Milkipur bypoll was necessitated after Awadhesh Prasad vacated the seat following his election to the Lok Sabha last year.
While the SP is looking to retain the seat, the BJP sees the election as an opportunity to avenge its loss in Faizabad in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh polls, Milkipur was the only seat the BJP lost in the Ayodhya district. While the BSP did not contest the bypoll, the Congress backed its alliance partner SP.
