‘I Quit Wrestling’ Says Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat Breaks Down After Brij Bhushan Aide Sanjay Singh Becomes WFI Chief

In the aftermath of Sanjay Kumar Singh’s election as the new chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on December 21, renowned wrestler Sakshi Malik has decided to bid farewell to the sport.
Sanjay Singh, a close associate of the controversial former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, secured victory over Anita Sheoran with a decisive 40 votes to 7, marking a significant shift in WFI leadership.
Back to square one for protesting wrestlers
Despite the fervent efforts of leading wrestlers such as Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik to rally against Brij Bhushan, the election results suggest that their protest has been in vain.
The trio, despite aggressively advocating for a change in leadership, failed to garner sufficient support from their wrestling community. Consequently, a close associate of the BJP MP now assumes the leadership position, signaling a setback for the protesting wrestlers.
Sakshi Malik makes shocking decision
Expressing her discontentment with the election results, Sakshi Malik declared her decision to retire from wrestling during a press conference.
She emphasized the hardships endured, stating, “We slept on the roads for 40 days, and people from various parts of the country came to support us. If Brij Bhushan Singh’s business partner and close aide assume the WFI presidency, I quit wrestling,” Malik told reporters during a press conference in Delhi.”We have made demands for a woman president. If the president would be a woman, harassment would not happen. But, there was no participation of women earlier and today you can see the list, not even a single woman was given a position. We had fought with complete strength but this fight will continue. The wrestlers of the new generation have to fight,” Malik added.
Vinesh Phogat in tears
In a poignant moment, fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat, along with Malik and Bajrang Punia, addressed reporters. Despite minimal expectations, Phogat expressed hope for justice, lamenting the uncertainty surrounding the future of wrestling.
“It’s saddening that the future of wrestling is in the dark. To whom shall we convey our grief?… We are still fighting,” she said, tears welling up.
Who is Sanjay Singh?
Sanjay Kumar Singh, affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and hailing from Varanasi, shares a close bond with Brij Bhushan.
Given the outgoing chief’s profound interest in the sport, it is anticipated that Singh will consult him in policy decisions.
Initially facing reservations from Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, these concerns were brought to the attention of Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in a meeting earlier this month.
Big win for Brij Bhushan camp
The Brij Bhushan camp, led by Singh, triumphed in 13 out of the 15 posts, including a clean sweep of all four Vice President positions.
The elected Vice Presidents are Jai Prakash from Delhi (37 votes), Asit Kumar Saha from West Bengal (42 votes), Kartar Singh from Punjab (44 votes), and N Phoni from Manipur (38 votes).
Wrestlers vs Brij Bhushan Singh
Numerous prominent Indian wrestlers levelled accusations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan, targeting women wrestlers, including juniors. They successfully garnered substantial support from diverse segments of society.
However, their protest lost momentum on May 28, the day they planned to march towards the new Parliament building. Delhi police intervened and removed all protesters from Jantar Mantar, citing rioting concerns.
The wrestlers officially terminated their protest on June 7 after receiving assurances from Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. He pledged that none of Brij Bhushan’s family members or close associates would be permitted to participate in the WFI election.

Mamata Banerjee to hold meeting with Bengal imams next week on opposing Waqf Act

Kolkata, April 11: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hold a meeting with the imams, muezzins, and religious leaders from the Muslim community in the state on April 16 to prepare the blueprint on how to oppose the recently promulgated Waqf Amendment Act.
The venue of the meeting will be Netaji Indoor Stadium in central Kolkata.
Firhad Hakim, the West Bengal Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister and the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, will also be present at the meeting.
Recently, at a programme of the Jain community in Kolkata, the Chief Minister gave a subtle message to the Union government that the Waqf Amendment Act will not be implemented in West Bengal.
He also described the Waqf Act as an “attempt to snatch others’ property”.
“Just as no one has the right to snatch my property, similarly, I too do not have the right to snatch others’ property. In West Bengal, I will never allow that. In West Bengal, the people from the minority community are almost 33 per cent of the population. Always remember that your Didi is there to protect you and your property. Our mission should be — ‘Jio Aur Jine Do (Live and let live)’,” CM Banerjee said on Wednesday.
Political observers feel that the proposed meeting at Netaji Indoor Stadium on April 16 will be an extension of the Chief Minister’s proclamation as regards the Act and the involvement of the imams, muezzins, and religious leaders from the Muslim community had been done to ensure that future movements on this issue take a bigger shape in the coming days.
Haikm, on Friday, told media persons that West Bengal is fortunate to have a Chief Minister as a result of which the interests of people from all religious communities are protected in the state.
“In West Bengal, there is no question of misrule arising out of attempts to divide people on the basis of religious beliefs. Our protests against the Waqf Amendment Act will continue,” he said.

Chhattisgarh Waqf Board chairman backs new law; says it will empower Muslim community

Raipur, April 11: Chhattisgarh Waqf Board Chairman, Dr Salim Raj, has welcomed the Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it a progressive step that will benefit the Muslim community a great deal. He said the new law would ensure better management of Waqf properties and promote education and development within the community.
Dr Raj stated, “This is a historic move by the BJP-led central government. Under the amended law, land belonging to mosques, dargahs, and graveyards will not be acquired by the government. Waqf properties will be redeveloped for the community’s good.”
He said that the amendment aims to introduce transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties, which he claims are currently plagued by misuse and illegal occupation.
“In Chhattisgarh, nearly 85 per cent of Waqf land is under illegal possession or is being arbitrarily controlled by Maulanas and Mutawallis (caretakers). This law will put an end to such unregulated control and bring these assets under legal scrutiny.”
Dr Raj argued that Waqf properties, worth crores of rupees, are underutilised, yielding no return for the community.
“If these assets are managed properly, the revenue generated can be invested in education for Muslim children and the overall uplift of the community,” he said.
He also announced that a new team would soon survey Waqf properties across the state. “The team will assess the current condition of properties, ensure proper usage, fix market-aligned rent values, and initiate recovery of encroached lands. The goal is to use every piece of Waqf land for the benefit of the people,” he said.
Dr. Raj also took a strong stance against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to the implementation of the new law in her state.
“Is Mamata Banerjee above the Constitution? If the law has been passed by Parliament, she is bound to implement it. Refusing to do so amounts to a violation of constitutional responsibility. Her position reflects vote-bank politics and nothing else,” he remarked.
He further stated that such resistance only hinders the socio-economic progress of the Muslim community and politicises a reform meant for its betterment.

IPL 2025: Shahrukh Khan praises Gujarat Titans’ simplicity and stability ahead of LSG clash

Lucknow, April 11: Ahead of their high-stakes encounter against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Gujarat Titans (GT) batter Shahrukh Khan has praised the team’s grounded and uncomplicated approach to the game. Speaking at a pre-match press interaction on Friday, the middle-order batter highlighted the Titans’ clarity of purpose and consistency as the cornerstone of their success in the league.
Gujarat Titans have been among the most consistent franchises since their inception in 2022, winning the title in their debut season under Hardik Pandya and maintaining a high standard in subsequent editions. This season, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, the Titans once again sit atop the points table with four wins in five games.
“I think we are a very simple team with simple methods,” Shahrukh said here on Friday. “Every team in the tournament is strong, but we focus on how we play our cricket. What we do matters less than how we do it.”
Shahrukh, who is yet to deliver a standout performance this season, praised the team’s grounded mentality, saying that regardless of wins or losses, the camp remains calm and composed.
“GT has always been a balanced side. We don’t try to be extravagant. We stick to playing smart, effective cricket. Our plans evolve during the match, based on the situation, and everyone in the team is on board with that adaptability. We don’t get too high after wins or too low after losses,” he explained.
He also credited GT’s success to the dynamic partnership between head coach Ashish Nehra and skipper Shubman Gill.
“Very intelligent coach, to be honest,” Shahrukh said of Nehra. “He’s deeply invested in his players and genuinely cares for the people around him. His energy and understanding of the game are vital for us.”
On captain Shubman Gill, Shahrukh added, “He’s growing as a leader with every match. The way he’s evolving his captaincy is commendable, and the combination of Ashish bhai and Shubman is seamless, like hand in glove.”
