Indian chess players continued to get the better of world champion Magnus Carlsen as after R Praggnanandhaa, Viswanathan Anand defeated the world No. 1 in a one-day blitz tournament ahead of the 10th edition of the Norway Chess championship.

Anand and Carlsen met in the seventh round of the blitz tournament — one of the shortest formats of the game played at the international level — and the Indian emerged winner.

Anand was playing with white pieces and the game was looking headed toward a draw but Carlsen tried to force something and landed in trouble and had to resign on the 43rd move.

Overall in nine games, Anand won three, drew four games, and lost two.

With a total score of five points from nine games to finish fourth behind Wesley So of the United States, Carlsen of Norway and Anish Giri of the Netherlands, Giri, Anand and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan finished with five points each but Giri finished third while Anand and Mamedyarov were placed fourth and fifth respectively.

The single round-robin blitz tournament was organised to decide the pairings for the main event of the Norway Chess festival — the super-strong classical chess tournament involving 10 players.

This over-the-board chess tournament will be the first classical event this year for Anand, who had recently won the rapid section of the Superbet Rapid & Blitz chess tournament in Poland, which is part of the Grand Chess Tour.

Others in the 10-player classical event are Carlsen, Wesley So, Giri, Mamedyarov, Teymur Radjabov of Azerbaijan, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France, Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, Wang Hao of China, and Aryan Tari of Norway.

In each round in the main tournament of the Norway Chess festival, players will have 120 minutes to complete the game with an increment of 10 seconds after 40 moves.

In case the classical game ends in a draw, the players will play an Armageddon game within 20 minutes, with the player with white pieces in the classical game getting 10 minutes to complete the game while the one with black pieces getting 7 minutes, with an increment of one second per move, starting from move 41.

In case the game ends in a draw, the player with black pieces is considered as winner.

A win in normal time control will earn a player three points while a defeat will get none. The winner of the Armageddon game will get 1.5 points while the loser will get 1 point.

The classical tournament will start with the first round on Tuesday and end on June 10.

The event carries a total prize fund of 2,500,000 Norwegian Krone (Rs 2.06 crore approx) with the winner getting 750,000 NOK (Rs 61.88 lakh approx).

Five fined for intrusion in Gir’s protected zone

Ahmedabad, June 6: The Forest Department in Gujarat has taken action against five individuals caught attempting to spot lions illegally in the Kodiya Vedma area of the Khambha Tulsishyam range in Dhari Gir East.

According to officials, forest patrol teams intercepted a car late at night on June 5 in the protected Kodiya VD zone.

The group, which included two individuals from Bhavnagar and three from Khambha, had entered the restricted area without permission in an attempt to sight lions.

Acting under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the Department imposed a fine of Rs 90,000 on the offenders. A formal case has also been registered against them.

Illegal lion sightings in the Gir forest region have become a growing concern, with such intrusions not only endangering wildlife but also violating the core principles of conservation.

Officials warned that strict legal and financial penalties will continue to be enforced against anyone disrupting the natural habitat or endangering the safety of both animals and people.

The Forest Department has reiterated its appeal to the public to avoid unauthorised wildlife excursions and support the ongoing efforts to protect the Asiatic lion population in the Gir forest. Illegal lion sightings and unauthorised safaris have become an increasing concern in Gujarat, particularly in and around the Gir National Park – the only natural habitat of Asiatic lions.

Over the past few years, forest officials have recorded multiple incidents of individuals and groups entering restricted areas for lion sightings, often during late hours and without permits.

In January 2023, eight people were caught conducting an illegal lion show in the Babariya range of Gir West and were fined a total of Rs 1.2 lakh under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

In another case from February 2022, a group of tourists from Surat was booked for entering a protected forest zone in the Amreli district and attempting to provoke a pride of lions for social media videos.

Similarly, in 2021, a local in Junagadh was arrested for organising a paid “lion show” for private guests, a case that led to increased surveillance by the Forest Department.

Vijay Mallya leads wave of reactions as RCB end IPL title drought

New Delhi, June 4: The long wait is finally over—and no one felt the emotions more than Vijay Mallya, the first owner of the Bengaluru franchise. As Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted their maiden IPL trophy after 18 years of heartbreak and hope, the former RCB owner led the wave of congratulatory messages that poured in from across the cricketing world.

“RCB are IPL Champions finally after 18 years,” Mallya posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Superb campaign right through the 2025 tournament. A well-balanced team Playing Bold with outstanding coaching and support staff. Many congratulations! Ee sala cup namde!!”

It was a moment that brought together generations of RCB fans and stakeholders, past and present. And the rest of the IPL fraternity stood in unison to applaud the team’s hard-earned glory.

Mumbai Indians, five-time champions, hailed the effort: “Congratulations to the NEW #TATAIPL Champions, @RCBTweets. A strong & memorable campaign.”

Sunrisers Hyderabad, who themselves have tasted title success in the past, acknowledged RCB’s tenacity: “Congratulations on an outstanding season and a well-earned title, @RCBTweets.”

Chennai Super Kings, RCB’s fiercest rivals, also put rivalry aside to share in the moment: “Congratulations, @RCBTweets! #IPL2025Final #WhistlePodu .”

The message that perhaps captured the emotions of millions of fans came from Kolkata Knight Riders: “EE SALA CUP NIMDE, CONGRATULATIONS.”

Even Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Lucknow Super Giants joined in, sharing stories, memes, and emotional posts celebrating the end of the title curse.

While the cricketing fraternity celebrated RCB’s victory, the occasion held deeply personal significance for Virat Kohli. As the team held on to win by six runs against Punjab Kings in a nerve-wracking final, Kohli dropped to his knees in tears. It was a fitting image of loyalty rewarded—after 18 years, three heartbreak losses in finals, and countless sacrifices, the talismanic batter had finally tasted IPL glory.

The journey to the title was far from smooth. RCB lost early wickets in the final, but vital partnerships—particularly between Kohli and Mayank Agarwal—ensured a fighting total of 190. Their bowlers, led by Krunal Pandya’s clutch spell of 2/17 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s nerveless death bowling, brought the cup home.

Despite a valiant 61* off 30 balls from Punjab’s Shashank Singh, RCB held their nerve. The final over drama only made the triumph sweeter. The title win united past legends, rival franchises, and fans from across the globe in celebration.

After years of taunts, memes, and near-misses, Royal Challengers Bengaluru are no longer titleless. The script has flipped, the wait is over, and the roar of “Ee Sala Cup Namdu” now echoes in reality, not just hope.
