World Environment Day: PM to participate in ‘Save Soil Movement’, launch ‘LiFE’
Raising awareness about soil health through the ‘Save Soil Movement’ and launching a global initiative ‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) Movement’ would be among the top engagements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the World Environment Day on Sunday.
In the first half, Modi will address the gathering at the ‘Save Soil Movement’ programme at Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital.
‘Save Soil Movement’ is a global movement to increase awareness about deteriorating soil health and bring about a conscious response to improve it. The movement was started by spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev in March 2022.
He had embarked on a 100-day motorcycle journey passing through 27 countries. June 5 marks the 75th day. The Prime Minister’s participation in the programme will be reflective of the shared concerns and commitment towards improving the health of soil in India,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said on Saturday.
Later in the second half, the Prime Minister will launch the global initiative ‘LiFE Movement’ via video conferencing.
This was a call originally made by Prime Minister Modi at the high-level ministerial segment at the climate change Conference of Parties (COP26) at Glasgow in November 2021 as a mantra to combat rising global warming.
The idea promotes an environment conscious lifestyle that focuses on “mindful and deliberate utilisation” instead of “mindless and destructive consumption”.
The launch will initiate ‘LiFE Global Call for Papers’ inviting ideas and suggestions from academics, universities & research institutions etc to influence and persuade individuals, communities and organisations across the world to adopt an environment conscious lifestyle.
The programme will also witness participation of Bill Gates, co-chairman, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Lord Nicholas Stern, climate economist; Cass Sunstein, author of Nudge Theory; Aniruddha Dasgupta, CEO and president, World Resources Institute; Inger Andersen, UNEP global head; Achim Steiner, UNDP global head and David Malpass, World Bank president, among others, the PMO statement said.

Mumbai: Court Convicts Chand Shaikh For Culpable Homicide, Sentences Him To 10 Years For Fatal Stabbing During Scuffle

Mumbai: A sessions court has convicted Guljar alias Chand Shaikh, a resident of Antop Hill, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder after he stabbed Imtiaz alias Raju, who was trying to intervene and resolve a scuffle. The victim succumbed to multiple stab injuries.
The court held that since there was no intention to kill, charges of murder cannot be invoked. It observed, “the act of the accused does not fall under section 302 IPC, as the intention to cause death is not established beyond reasonable doubt. However, the accused had the knowledge that their act was likely to cause death.”
Shaikh has been sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, while his siblings Fatima, Sadam, Arif and their mother Sabira have been awarded three years’ rigorous imprisonment each for the same offence.
The case, registered with Ghatkopar police in 2015 by the deceased’s brother Abdul Khan, stemmed from an extramarital affair between Jafar Kadar Ali Sayyad and Fatima. On March 12, 2015, a quarrel erupted; Fatima’s brothers assaulted Jafar, Fatima threw chilli powder, and when Imtiaz tried to pacify the situation, Chand stabbed him. Days earlier, on March 8, 2015, Chand had threatened Jafar and Imtiaz.
Relying on eyewitness testimonies, the court convicted the family but ruled out murder charges.

Mumbai: BMC Begins Major Resurfacing Of MSRDC Bridges On WEH & EEH After DY CM Eknath Shinde’s Directive; ₹136 Crore Allocated

Mumbai: Following directives of the deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, the BMC has begun repairing Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC)-maintained bridges on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and the Western Express Highway (WEH). It has allocated about Rs. 62.50 crore for mastic-layer work on EEH bridges and around Rs 73.80 crore for repairs on WEH bridges.
After facing widespread public anger this monsoon over pothole-ridden MSRDC flyovers, the BMC intervened to fill the craters despite not being responsible for their maintenance.
To prevent a similar crisis next monsoon, the civic body has decided to fully resurface several such flyovers across the city, following a communication from MSRDC permitting the BMC to undertake the work, said civic sources. Last week, Shinde took a review meeting and directed to carry out resurfacing work on both the highways.
On Thursday, the BMC invited tenders for resurfacing and repair work on flyovers along the EEH and WEH. A civic official said the project includes not just resurfacing but also crack sealing, new lane markings, and pedestrian pathway repairs.
Extensive work is planned on the Ghatkopar, Mankhurd, Vikhroli, and Thane-bound bridges on the EEH. In addition to mastic resurfacing, storm-water drain repairs, footpath restoration, and chamber-level adjustments will be carried out.
Although potholes were patched during the monsoon, full resurfacing is needed for long-term durability, as heavy traffic erodes mastic asphalt and creates uneven surfaces.
“For BMC flyovers, repairs are done during the defect-liability period or by the civic body. Since MSRDC hasn’t carried out resurfacing and potholes may return, the BMC will do the work on its behalf,” the official said.
