Willing to negotiate with US but remains wary: Iranian President
Tehran, Aug 29: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that Iran will negotiate with the United States, but remains wary of Washington, stressing that Tehran will honour its commitments only if the other side does the same.
Pezeshkian made the remarks in a televised interview broadcast on Friday night (local time), responding to questions about whether ongoing diplomatic efforts could revive the peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Iran and the United States in June and restore the Iranian nation’s rights.
“We can move forward” if Iran’s actions are met with reciprocal and proportional actions from the other side, the Iranian president said, acknowledging that the two sides might not achieve all their objectives.
Under the MoU, the United States was expected to lift a naval blockade and oil and petrochemical sanctions against Iran and release Iranian frozen assets.
Pezeshkian said Iran had exported nearly 90 million barrels of oil during the period when the agreement was being implemented, reports Xinhua news agency.
“The main issue is that we must be committed to the MoU we have written. When we sit down at the negotiating table, we can talk to them,” he said.
On June 18, the United States and Iran signed the deal on ending the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon. Under the MoU, they were scheduled to hold negotiations within 60 days, which ended on Aug. 17, to reach a final agreement.
The talks’ fate remains unclear following the escalation between the two countries last month.
Pezeshkian’s comments came as Iran continues to grapple with economic pressures at home.
In a separate message Friday marking Government Week, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei called for “serious” attention to economic and livelihood challenges, including inflation, unemployment and the management of prices and markets.
Iran needs stronger economic growth, increased investment and a production boost, Khamenei said, describing greater reliance on domestic production as key to addressing the country’s economic difficulties.
Where domestic production cannot meet demand, imports should be used “properly and wisely,” he said.
Khamenei also called for maintaining national unity and protecting social cohesion, warning against using statements that lead to hopelessness and weaken national and public motivation.
The remarks came amid intensified US economic pressure on Iran. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump announced “the most crushing economic operation ever taken” against any country providing a lifeline to Iran.
“This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” Trump said in a social media post, calling the move “an ECONOMIC D-DAY.”

Lahore meetings signal ISI plans for multi-front drug push into India

New Delhi, Sep 18: Earlier this month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the war on drugs had entered an intensive mission mode for 2026-29, making it clear that this objective of making the country drug-free would be achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, even as Indian agencies warn that Pakistan is looking to ramp up narcotics smuggling into India on a very large scale.
Intercepts suggest that multiple meetings have been held between officials of the ISI, members of the Dawood Ibrahim syndicate and other narcotics smugglers in recent weeks.
An Intelligence Bureau official said that the latest meeting that was held last month in Lahore, discussed multiple ways of pushing more drugs into India through the borders of both Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.
The ISI not only wants more money to fund terror groups, but also seeks to challenge the Narendra Modi administration, which has launched a massive attack on narcotics smuggling, the official added.
An official said that the next couple of months would be extremely challenging.
Going by the intercepts that have been picked up in Pakistan, the writing on the wall is clear. The agencies do not just have to battle against the existing networks and tactics, but will also have to counter emerging tactics that the ISI would look to deploy, the official said.
While the ISI wants the primary focus of narcotic smuggling to be at the borders with Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, it is also looking at other borders as well.
Pakistan will look to work closely with the cartels operating at the Golden Triangle, the border region where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet. This cartel focuses extensively on heroin and synthetic drug trafficking, the official said.
Another official said that the smuggling at the Golden Triangle affects the northeastern states the most.
The ISI is known to have backed several insurgent groups in this region and would look to help them raise funds with the help of drug money, the official said. The ISI is aware that the northeast is a sensitive region and hence, along with the push being made in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, it would look to focus on this region as well, the official said.
Pakistan also has the southern states very much on its radar as well. The likes of Haji Salim focus immensely on this region.
If one notices the pattern, the ISI has been backing Salim heavily so that he can ramp up operations in the southern states, officials say.
With the agencies being on a relentless pursuit of narcotics smugglers, the recent meetings held in Lahore indicate that they want to corner India from all sides.
It is a three-pronged approach that is aimed at raising funds for terror, stressing the Indian agencies, and also challenging the Narendra Modi government’s vision of a drug-free India.
Officials point out that the ISI has instructed its cartels and stooges not to rely only on drones for narcotics smuggling. The instruction is to use every tool at its disposal to push drugs into India.
In this battle against narcotics smuggling, the Indian agencies would not just deal with the drones, but also smuggling that takes place using the land and sea routes. In addition to this, the ISI has also instructed the drug cartels to ramp up recruitment in India specifically to push drugs within the country.
These cartels have been majorly challenged by the Indian security agencies, owing to which they are falling short of carriers to supply drugs. This explains the decision to spruce up recruitment in India.
Between 2014 and 2026, statistics show that the law enforcement agencies have registered 8,75,000 cases and arrested 10,97,000 people, including smugglers, carriers and individuals linked to drug networks.
In the previous decade between 2004 and 2014, the number of arrests stood at 1,95,000. Further, 747 foreign nationals, primarily from Nigeria, Nepal, and Myanmar, were arrested in 2025, compared to the 660 and 735 arrests made in 2024 and 2023, respectively. Additionally, five high-profile traffickers such as Salim Dola have been extradited from countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia.
These statistics show the scale of the war against drugs and explain clearly why the ISI keeps re-strategising and is also looking to ramp up recruitment in India, an official said.

Islamabad, Sep 18: At least 15 people were killed and over 50 others injured after a blast near a mosque in the Police Lines area of Kohat district in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, local media reported.
District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital’s M S Tahir Ali Shah said that 15 bodies along with over 50 injured people were brought to the hospital after the blast, Pakistan-based Geo News reported. Rescue officials said that the mosque’s outer section was severely damaged and a wall collapsed due to the blast. According to officials, rescue operations were being conducted at the site of the incident, Geo News reported.
The explosion took place amid a rise in attacks targeting Pakistani law enforcement personnel, particularly in the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
On September 10, a constable was killed, and another was seriously injured after unidentified assailants targeted a checkpost in Kank area of Mastung district of Pakistan’s Balochistan province.
According to police, the unidentified assailants targetted the checkpost before escaping from the spot after an exchange of fire with the police personnel stationed there, leading Pakistani daily Dawn reported.
After the attack, police and security personnel cordoned off the area and began a search operation to find the attackers.
Meanwhile, a monthly security assessment by Islamabad-based think tank, Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), has revealed that 199 terrorist attacks were reported in Pakistan in August, in comparison to 144 in July, Dawn reported. Houthi leader denies targeting Mecca amid escalating tensions with Saudi Arabia

Sanaa, Sep 18: Yemen’s Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi rejected accusations that his group had attempted to attack the Islamic holy city of Mecca, calling the allegation “fabrication and misinformation” amid escalating hostilities with Saudi Arabia.
In a televised address carried by Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, al-Houthi on Thursday said claims that Houthi forces had targeted Mecca were a “lie,” arguing that the accusation was being used to mobilize broader support for what he described as “military measures imposed on Yemen.”
Al-Houthi also accused Saudi Arabia of failing to advance a political settlement during the period of relative calm preceding the latest escalation, Xinhua news agency reported.
Instead, he said, restrictions affecting Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen had been tightened, with limitations on airport operations and imports remaining among the key unresolved issues.
Al-Houthi called on supporters across Yemen to hold mass demonstrations on Friday to reject what he described as Saudi “fabrications and slander.”
His remarks came a day after Saudi Arabia publicly accused the Houthis of launching a drone toward Mecca. The Saudi-led coalition said on Wednesday that the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces intercepted and destroyed the drone south of Mecca on Tuesday evening, before it entered the holy city’s restricted airspace.
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki described the security of Islam’s two holiest sites and pilgrims as a “red line” and said necessary measures would be taken in response. He said the incident was the second alleged Houthi attempt to target Mecca, following what the coalition described as a ballistic missile attack on July 27, 2017.
The exchange comes amid a widening confrontation, with the Houthis making major gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and around the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait since Sept. 3, while stepping up missile and drone attacks on Saudi military and oil facilities. The Houthis, meanwhile, say Saudi warplanes have intensified airstrikes across Yemen.
Yemen’s conflict erupted in late 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
