Sonam Wangchuk’s condition stable, blood parameters marginally altered, says hospital
New Delhi, July 19: Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s blood parameters remain “marginally altered”, and he is being monitored round the clock to promptly detect and manage any potential complications that may arise despite the current stable condition, officials from the Safdarjung Hospital said on Sunday.
Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for 21 days at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, was shifted to a hospital early on Saturday after his health deteriorated. The move was carried out in compliance with directions of the Delhi High Court and on the advice of medical experts.
In the latest health bulletin on Sunday, the hospital said, “Shri Sonam Wangchuk is being given the required medical intervention at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital. His vital parameters are stable at present; however, his blood parameters remain marginally altered, and considering the physiological stress and systemic effects of prolonged fasting, he requires continuous medical care under the close observation of a multidisciplinary team of experts.”
“The treating teams of doctors from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, are of the considered opinion that sustained medical intervention and round-the-clock clinical monitoring are essential to promptly detect and manage any potential complications that may arise despite his currently stable condition,” officials said.
Accordingly, the hospital said that all necessary medical care is being provided, and his clinical status, including his blood parameters, is being continuously monitored.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali J. Angmo wrote a letter to the hospital in which she asked them to complete discharge formalities at the earliest so that he can be shifted to a medical centre of the family’s choice, citing “lack of transparency” in his treatment.
On Saturday, Delhi Police personnel reached the protest site in the morning and shifted Wangchuk to the hospital amid sloganeering and protests by CJP activists and the public gathered there.
The CJP, protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar since June 6, is demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak case. The protestors were joined by innovator and activist Sonam Wangchuk, who, on June 28, officially began an indefinite hunger strike at the protest site.

Holiday declared in Kerala on Monday as football fever peaks ahead of FIFA world cup final

Thiruvananthapuram, July 19: Kerala’s passion for football reached a new high on Sunday as the state government declared a holiday on Monday for all educational institutions, allowing students to stay up and watch the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina without worrying about attending classes the next morning.
The holiday covers schools under the General Education Department as well as colleges, universities and professional institutions under the Higher Education Department.
The decision was taken following directions from Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan after thousands of football enthusiasts, particularly students, appealed through social media for a holiday.
The final is scheduled to kick off at 12.30 a.m. IST on Monday, making it difficult for students to attend classes after a late-night match.
Football enjoys an unmatched following in Kerala, where the sport is often celebrated with a passion rivalled only by cricket in other parts of the country.
In the days leading up to the final, towns and villages across the state have been transformed into football arenas, with giant cut-outs of international stars towering over roadsides, junctions and playgrounds.
Supporters of Spain and Argentina have erected massive banners, flags and decorative arches, while local fan clubs have organised public screenings, rallies and celebrations, creating a festive atmosphere across Kerala.
The overwhelming response from football fans played a key role in the government’s decision. Several schools in Ernakulam had already announced a holiday on their own after receiving requests from students and parents.
The state government’s announcement brought uniformity to the decision, ensuring that students across Kerala could enjoy the championship match.
Higher Education Minister Roji M. John announced that all higher education institutions, including professional colleges, would remain closed on Monday. He said the decision would enable students to watch one of world football’s biggest sporting events without the inconvenience of travelling to campuses after a sleepless night.
General Education Minister N. Samsudheen also confirmed a holiday for schools under his department through a social media post, opening his message with the playful words, “Happy now, kids?”
He said the government had considered the sentiments of football-loving students before taking the decision.
With public viewing centres, giant screens and football-themed celebrations planned across the state, Kerala is set to witness another unforgettable night as lakhs of fans unite to cheer their favourite teams in the FIFA World Cup final.

13-year-old girl sexually assaulted by father in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri; accused on run

New Delhi, July 19: In a terrifying case from Delhi, a man has been accused of sexually assaulting his own 13-year-old daughter in the Jahangirpuri area of the National Capital, officials said on Sunday, adding that the accused is currently absconding.
According to the police, a case has been registered under the POCSO Act following a complaint at Mahindra Park police station by the mother of the victim. Following this, the father was reported to be on the run.
The complainant stated that her father, Shakir Ali, resides at Badli Village with her grandmother, while she lives with her mother and her 10-year-old brother in Jahangirpuri.
The survivor alleged that on July 7, her father came to their residence when her mother and brother were not at home.
“During this time, he allegedly established forcible physical relations with her against her will and threatened to kill her and her mother if she disclosed the incident to anyone,” she was quoted by the police as saying.
“The accused is absconding, and efforts are being made to trace and apprehend him,” officials said.
Further details in the case are awaited.
This comes just months after a man was arrested for sexually assaulting his 13-year-old stepdaughter in Delhi.
The minor girl was pregnant after being subjected to the heinous crime by her stepfather.
When the police reached the spot, they took the girl to a safe environment.
In the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the accused, who was residing with the victim, had been sexually assaulting the girl for over a year.
The officials shifted the girl to a hospital where the doctors confirmed that she was about five months pregnant.
