Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh wrote a letter to the Legislative Council Secretariat accusing the BJP of creating hatred between two communities by giving political color to the bills

Published

on

Mumbai: Samajwadi Party MLA from Bhiwandi East Rais Shaikh on Thursday wrote a letter to the Assembly Secretariat demanding that two private bills on love jihad and forced conversions introduced by BJP MLAs be rejected. MLA Shaikh alleged that the government’s intention to bring a law on the issue of Love Jihad was clear, but the ruling MLA had to bring a private bill because there was doubt over the government’s intention.

In a letter to the Assembly Secretariat, MLA Shaikh said that the government had constituted a 7-member committee headed by the state Director General of Police in February, which will study the legal provisions and draft a law to prevent conversion through force or fraud. The committee includes senior officials from key departments including Women and Child Welfare, Minority Affairs, Law and Justice, Social Justice and Special Assistance, and Home.

Although the government has set up a committee to study the legal framework, last week two MLAs from the ruling BJP introduced private bills on the issue of forced conversions. MLA Rais Shaikh said, “It seems that these bills have been brought to politicise the alleged issue of love jihad and create animosity between the two communities.”

Sheikh said that when a committee is constituted to study such a sensitive issue, members of the Assembly are expected to present their concerns and suggestions before the committee. “However, the two main objectives behind the private bills introduced by the BJP MLAs are only to distort and gain publicity,” alleged MLA Rais Shaikh. While the government has already announced its intention to enact a law against forced religious conversion, the introduction of private bills by ruling party MLAs shows a lack of confidence in the intentions of their own government. MLA Rais Shaikh wrote a letter to the Legislative Secretariat requesting the rejection of both the private bills.

Nagpur Violence: AIMIM Leaders Slam BJP For ‘Spreading Hate’ While Condemning Unrest; Call For Strict Action

Nagpur: AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan has condemned the recent violence in Nagpur, stating that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. “We strongly denounce the violence in Nagpur. The government must take strict legal action against those responsible,” he said.

Pathan further criticised the BJP, accusing some party members of inciting hatred. “We have consistently demanded action against those who spread hate. Instead of addressing real issues, the BJP is distracting people by raising a 400-year-old Aurangzeb issue,” he added.

AIMIM’s Imtiaz Jaleel Appeals For Peace

AIMIM Maharashtra president Imtiaz Jaleel also responded, urging citizens to maintain peace. Taking to social media platform X, he posted, “At any cost, come what may we have to maintain ‘PEACE.’ Let us not fall prey to the dirty games of politicians and media. Let’s stand united at this hour.”

CM Devendra Fadnavis Appeals For Peace & Calls For Stern Action

The violence erupted amid ongoing controversy surrounding the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Sambhajinagar, leading to clashes between two groups in Nagpur. The unrest involved stone-pelting and arson, leading a strong response from the authorities.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is closely monitoring the situation and has directed the police commissioner to take strict action against those responsible for inciting violence. In a video statement, CM Fadnavis condemned the incident, calling it “highly unfortunate.”

“The tension in Nagpur’s Mahal area is deeply regrettable. Some individuals resorted to stone-pelting, even targeting the police, which is completely unacceptable. I am personally keeping a close watch on the developments,” he stated.

Fadnavis has ordered the police to take all necessary steps to maintain law and order. He assured that the government will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt peace and has directed officials to implement the strictest possible measures against rioters.

Appealing for calm, the chief minister said, “Nagpur is a city of peace-loving people. Everyone must act responsibly to ensure harmony. Anyone attempting to create unrest will face severe consequences.”

50 Arrested For Arson & Clashes

At least 50 people were arrested following violent clashes in central Nagpur late Monday night. The unrest left dozens injured, including 10 anti-riot commandos, two senior police officers, and two firefighters. One constable remains in critical condition. Mobs set fire to two bulldozers and 40 vehicles, including police vans, as authorities struggled to regain control.

Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal responded by deploying over 1,000 officers and enforcing prohibitory orders in Mahal, Chitnis Park Chowk and Bhaldarpura, areas deemed high-risk. Key roads were barricaded, and additional reinforcements and intelligence teams were mobilized to prevent further violence. The administration has intensified security measures across the city to prevent further escalation.

Maha: 3 BJP nominees, one each from NCP and Shiv Sena file nominations for state council bypolls

Published

on

Mumbai, March 18: BJP nominees Dadarao Keche, Sandip Joshi and Sanjay Kanekar, NCP candidate Sanjay Khodke and Shiv Sena nominee Chandrakant Raghuvansi on Monday filed their nominations for by-election to the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

They are set to get elected unopposed as no one from the Maha Vikas Aghadi filed their nomination for want of adequate numbers. Monday was the last date for the filing of nominations. As per the Election Commission notification, the election is slated for March 27.

The by-election was necessitated after the five state council members Praveen Datke, Gopichand Padalkar, Ramesh Karad (BJP) and one each from NCP member Rajesh Vitekar and Shiv Sena member Aamshya Padave elected to the state assembly in the elections held in November last year. While Padavi’s term in the state council was till July 7, 2028, Vitekar’s term was till July 27, 2030. The tenure of Praveen Datke, Gopichand Padalkar and Ramesh Karad will end on May 13, 2026.

BJP preferred the party loyalists for nomination instead of selecting those who have come the party fold from Congress, NCP SP or Shiv Sena UBT. Keche, who was legislator from Arvi assembly constituency from Wardha district during 2019 and 2024, was denied ticket in the last assembly elections after BJP fielded Sumit Wankhede, a former personal assistant of the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

After he was dropped from nomination, Keche had threatened to contest as an independent. However, Fadnavis intervened and took him in a special flight to union Home Minister Amit Shah. After his meeting with HM Shah, Keche was promised his rehabilitation. He later declared he would toe the party line and supported Wankhede.

As far as Sandip Joshi is concerned, he has been a close confidant of Fadnavis.

Joshi is a former mayor of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. He had lost the election to the state council from the Nagpur graduates’ constituency to the Congress nominee. The BJP did not select him for nomination in the state election but now has been nominated for state council by election.

In the case of Sandip Kenekar, he is from Sambhajinagar from Marathwada and associated with the BJP’s OBC cell. BJP had considered his nomination from Aurangabad east constituency during the 2014 assembly elections but denied after party fielded Atul Save. Kenekar could finally get nomination after 11 year’s of wait due to chief minister’s strong recommendation.

As far as NCP nominee Sanjay Khodke is concerned, he is a close associate of party chief and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

Khodke is known to be the backroom strategist of the NCP since its formation and has worked with all party stalwarts including Sharad Pawar, Chhagan Bhujbal, late RR Patil and now with Ajit Pawar.

Incidentally, Khodke’s wife Sulabha Khodke is the NCP legislator from Amravati constituency.

Shiv Sena’s move to field Chandrakant Raghuvanshi is aimed at increasing its presence in the tribal-dominated Nandurbar district and also in North Maharashtra.

He comes from Nandurbar district and he is an influential leader and instrumental in winning the Congress bastion Akkalkuwa assembly seat to Shiv Sena.
