Pune building collapse: Death toll climbs to 8, one person still missing
Pune, July 12: The death toll in the Moshi garbage dump collapse in Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad has increased to eight after rescue teams recovered the bodies of seven more victims from the damaged administrative building of the Waste-to-Energy project on Saturday, officials said on Sunday.
Rescue personnel also confirmed that one person is still unaccounted for, and search operations are continuing to locate the missing individual.
The incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday when a massive mound of garbage gave way and crashed onto the administrative building located inside the Moshi garbage depot operated by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
At the time of the collapse, a total of 23 people were trapped. Of them, 22 were inside the administrative building, while one person was buried beneath a large heap of garbage adjacent to the structure.
Five individuals managed to escape safely immediately after the incident.
Following the collapse, authorities launched an extensive rescue operation involving personnel from the Indian Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Fire Services and the police.
On the first day of the operation, rescue teams succeeded in pulling nine people out of the damaged building alive. Search efforts then continued to locate those who remained trapped inside the debris.
On Thursday, rescuers recovered Bhavesh Wani from the collapsed structure and immediately shifted him to a hospital. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
The operation to reach the remaining victims continued over the following days, but rescue teams encountered major challenges due to the unstable condition of the damaged building, which posed a significant risk to personnel involved in the mission.
To facilitate the rescue work, heavy machinery, including 12 excavators, dumpers and JCB machines, was deployed to remove debris surrounding the building and create a safer passage for rescue teams.
Despite continuous efforts, the precarious state of the structure made it extremely difficult for rescuers to enter the building.
In a bid to accelerate the operation, two advanced demolition excavators were brought to the site on Friday night.
Working under the technical supervision of the NDRF, rescue personnel carefully dismantled the most hazardous concrete sections of the collapsed building in a controlled manner.
The process enabled teams to gain access to the interior of the structure and resume the search operation.
During the rescue operation on Saturday, teams located seven people trapped inside the building. All seven were immediately shifted to a hospital in Pimpri, where medical officers examined them and declared them dead.
With the recovery of these bodies, the overall death toll in the tragedy has risen to eight.
Meanwhile, one individual, believed to be buried beneath the garbage mound adjacent to the collapsed building, remains missing. Rescue personnel continue to carry out the search operation on a war footing.
Officials said NDRF dog squads, along with specialised search equipment, are being used to locate the missing person.

Maha: 7-year-old student dies at Palghar ashram school; 26 others hospitalised

Palghar, Aug 25: A seven-year-old student of a residential school in Maharashtra Palghar district has died after suffering from high fever and breathing difficulties, while 26 other students have been hospitalised with symptoms of cold, cough and fever, officials said on Tuesday.
The Class 1 student, enrolled at an ashram school in Maswan, developed a high fever on August 22 and was taken to the local Primary Health Centre (PHC) for treatment.
When his fever returned on Monday, the PHC medical officer observed that his oxygen levels were dropping and advised that he be shifted by ambulance to the Rural Hospital in Manor.
After the child was taken to the hospital, medical officers conducted an ECG and subsequently declared him dead, an official said.
The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is received, the official added.
Following the incident, senior health and administrative officials visited the school, which has 395 resident students out of a total enrolment of 449. A medical team also conducted a comprehensive health screening of students on the campus.
As a precautionary measure, 26 students showing mild symptoms of cold, cough or fever were placed under medical observation at the Maswan PHC. Their condition was reported to be stable.
Integrated Tribal Development Project Officer Vishal Khatri visited the school and the health centre to meet the hospitalised students and their parents.
The incident comes weeks after three tribal girls died following venomous snakebites at a residential school hostel in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district, where they were reportedly sleeping on the floor.
The deaths have renewed scrutiny of safety and health conditions at Maharashtra’s ashram schools. Earlier this month, officials reportedly said that 584 students had died in state-run and government-aided residential facilities across the state over the past two years.
Reported causes of the deaths included snakebites, sickle cell disease, serious illnesses, accidents and suicides.

Clash at Bhiwandi Dindigad Hill Leaves Six Injured; Tension Reportedly Erupts Again at Hospital

Bhiwandi, Maharashtra: A dispute between two groups of youths at Dindigad Hill near Bhiwandi escalated into a physical confrontation on Sunday afternoon, leaving six people injured, according to preliminary information.
The incident reportedly began after a disagreement at the hill area. The dispute is understood to have been linked to objections over non-vegetarian food being brought to the location. What started as a verbal argument soon turned violent, with members of the two groups allegedly assaulting each other.
The injured were taken to Bhiwandi Sub-District Hospital for medical treatment. However, tension reportedly flared again when members of the two groups came face-to-face at the hospital. Police personnel were deployed at the hospital to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and are examining the claims made by those involved. Further legal action is expected after statements are recorded and the facts of the incident are established.
The incident has raised concerns over the need for restraint and peaceful resolution of disputes, particularly in public places where clashes can quickly create tension in the surrounding area.
