Nagpada and Belasis flyover work completed… completed ahead of schedule, bridge connecting the road, relief for the public

Mumbai: The final work of the Belasis flyover connecting Nagpara and Mumbai Central Station has been completed in a record time of just 15 months and 6 days. It is noteworthy that as per the terms and conditions of the tender, there is still a gap of 4 months left for the work of this flyover. The work order for the construction of this bridge was given in September 2024. While the actual work started on October 1, 2024. The work on the railway tracks was completed by the Railway Department, while the work of girder bracing, deck sheet, slab casting and both the approach roads were completed by the Municipal Corporation. Excellent coordination, planned work and round the clock efforts between the Municipal Corporation Bridge Department, Railway Department, concerned Local Administrative Department Office (Ward Office) and Traffic Police have made it possible to successfully complete this flyover project before the scheduled date. Under the guidance of Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, various important infrastructure and other projects have been taken up by the Bridge Department of the Municipal Corporation. The bridge will reduce the travel time of the citizens of Mumbai by constructing flyovers at various places, constructing bridges by placing girders on railway tracks and constructing cement concrete roads to ensure the quality of the roads. In this regard, the 130-year-old British-era Belasi Bridge has been demolished and rebuilt. After the British-era Belasi Flyover on the railway line near Mumbai Central Station was declared dangerous, the Municipal Corporation started its reconstruction work. The engineers of the Municipal Corporation Bridge Department and the Railway Department were trying to complete the bridge work in record time from the first day. For this, the entire work was divided and meticulously planned. The duration of the sub-activity of the work was fixed. Also, the engineers ensured that the time limit would be followed under any circumstances. The effort received valuable support from the local administrative department office and traffic police officers.

The total length of the Belasis bridge is 333 meters. Of these, 138.39 meters are in the east and 157.39 meters in the west. While the railway line is 36.90 meters long. The length of the carriageway is 7 meters and the bridge is designed with a footpath of sufficient width on both sides. The completion of this bridge was challenging. Many difficulties were faced during the execution of the work. These include the transfer of ‘best’ ships, removal of 13 structures obstructing the construction of the bridge and allotment of alternative houses, removal of the boundary wall of a housing society near the bridge, a case before the High Court, etc. Overcoming these, all the engineers ensured that there was no delay in the work. All the work was scheduled as per the plan, hence the work continued uninterrupted even during the 4 months of monsoon. Due to which the construction of Belasis Bridge has been completed ahead of schedule, Belasis Bridge located on Jehangir Boman Bahram Marg (formerly Belasis Road) in South Mumbai is a vital link connecting Mumbai Central, Nagpada and Tadeo by rail from east to west. The reconstruction of Belasis Bridge will restore the east-west traffic facility that has been disrupted for the past two years. Once Belasis Bridge is operational, it will help in reducing traffic congestion on Jehangir Boman Bahram Marg (formerly Belasis Road), Dadasaheb Bhadkamkar Marg (Grant Road), especially at Patte Bapura Marg and Mahalaxmi Asthana Bridge.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar said that if the Municipal Corporation implements the project with strict planning and uniform discipline, then despite various challenges, development works can be successfully completed before the deadline as shown by the Belasis Flyover project. This work has been done with the positive thought that by implementing the infrastructure works on priority basis, it should be ensured that the citizens do not face minimum inconvenience, if these works are completed quickly and in a quality manner, then its fruits can reach maximum citizens on time. It is being ensured that all the departments of the Municipal Corporation will be diligent in completing the infrastructure works in this manner. The final work of Belasis Bridge was completed on January 6, 2026. Load test, structural stability certificate, and safety certificate have been obtained. In addition, after obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Railway Department to operate the bridge, the Belasis Bridge will be opened to traffic in collaboration with the traffic police,

Maharashtra FDA chief IAS Tukaram Mundhe takes another major action, targeting five club-restaurants, including McDonald’s.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the food licences of prominent South Mumbai establishments, including The Bombay Presidency Radio Club, the Colaba outlet of McDonald’s and the Status Restaurant in Nariman Point, following surprise inspections in August.

The FDA has suspended the food licence of The Bombay Presidency Radio Club due to severe violations of safety and hygiene regulations. During the inspection of the club’s kitchen on Wednesday, officials found a massive breach of food safety and sanitation standards.

The inspection uncovered active fly infestations in various kitchen areas, a dead cockroach, and open cockroach traps in the utensil-washing zone.

Authorities found flaking ceiling plaster directly over food preparation areas, posing a risk of falling into food, as well as washing powders and chemicals stored right alongside food items.

Utensils and food products were discovered to be kept directly on the floor, non-vegetarian refrigerators were unhygienic, and food items were not being thawed properly.

Staff members’ sweaty helmets and clothing were found stored alongside food, kitchen doors were improperly sealed, waste bins were placed next to cooking stoves, and signs of spitting were noticed on the premises.

The inspection revealed an overall non-compliance rate of 47 per cent by the establishment.

Citing public health and safety, the FDA suspended the licence under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006.

The club has been ordered to immediately halt all food purchases, sales, and distribution during the suspension period, with a warning of stern legal action for any violations.

Authorities found widespread disregard for basic protocols, such as staff handling food without washing hands, uncalibrated refrigeration units, and a complete lack of temperature monitoring logs.

The McDonald’s kiosk in Colaba was penalised for failing 18 out of 20 safety points, submitting falsified 148-page compliance reports, and deceptively using cheese analogues without menu declarations.

Operating licences have been suspended with immediate effect under the FSS Act, 2006, barring all food manufacturing, sales, and distribution until full compliance is legally verified.

Following the raids, McDonald’s said they have zero-tolerance towards food safety hazards and are reviewing the FDA report.

“At McDonald’s, we take pride in maintaining high food safety standards across our restaurants and have a zero-tolerance approach to food safety issues. We respect the regulatory process and are reviewing the observations referenced in the report,” McDonald’s said in a statement.

“McDonald’s follows rigorous food quality, safety and hygiene standards, in line with regulatory requirements, including the use of real cheese and real paneer in our food. We believe it is important that our practices are accurately understood and represented. Our focus remains on delivering the quality and experience expected from us every day. Customers have always been welcome to take a kitchen tour and learn more about our food preparation practices,” the statement further read.

Along with the prominent South Mumbai establishments, the FDA has suspended the food registration certificate of the Khar Gymkhana due to severe hygiene lapses and critical food safety violations.

Inspections exposed a high risk of cross-contamination from unsegregated raw, cooked, vegetarian, and non-vegetarian foods. Hazardous storage of chemicals and a complete lack of pest control traps was also found.

The establishment has been ordered to immediately halt all food production, storage, purchase, sale, and distribution activities during the suspension period.
