Mumbai News: BMC To Announce 10 Nominated Corporators On February 25, Taking House Strength To 237
Mumbai: On Wednesday, February 25, one month after the BMC elections, 10 nominated corporators will be announced, taking the total number of corporators to 237.
After the appointment of the standing, education and improvement committee chairpersons, all eyes are on the appointments of the nominated corporators in the BMC.
From this term, the BMC will have 10 nominated corporators, and considering the winning numbers of the political parties, the BJP will have the highest number of four nominated corporators, Shiv Sena (UBT) will have three, Shinde Sena will have two, and the Congress will have one nominated corporator.
The nominated corporators from the BJP are Pravin Chedda, Pratik Karpe, Nitesh Singh and Kamlakar Dalvi. Chedda is a former Leader of Opposition from the Congress, a known face from Ghatkopar, who is now with the BJP. Nitesh is the son of the former Leader of Opposition from Congress and MLC Rajhans Singh, who is now with the BJP, while Dalvi is said to be a close aide of Minister Ashish Shelar.
The Shiv Sena (Shinde) has nominated Raj Surve and Balkrishna Brid. Raj is the son of MLA Prakash Surve and Brid is a former corporator.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has nominated Sainath Durge, Madhuri Manjrekar and Kailash Pathak. Durge is a former nominated member of the BMC Education Committee and Pathak is said to be a close aide of MLA Anant Nar.
The Congress has nominated its former corporator, Virendra Singh.
The political parties have submitted proposals to the BMC administration on the candidates they have nominated, and the appointments will be announced at the general body meeting of all corporators in the House on Wednesday, February 25.
There were high hopes for known and senior faces like Ravi Raja and Vinod Mishra, who lost elections by thin margins, to be the candidates for nominated corporators. All the political parties have ensured that their nominated corporators are those who were not fielded in the 2026 BMC elections.
The nominated corporators get an annual fund of Rs 60 lakh from the BMC, which they can use anywhere across the city, unlike the elected corporators, who can use the funds for the ward they are elected from.
The nominated corporators do not have voting rights in the House and committee meetings; however, the political parties are considering moving a proposal to amend the rules, giving the nominated corporators voting rights and the opportunity to become chairperson of the statutory committees.

Rulers pushing Maha into darkness; Lord Ganesha save us: Shiv Sena(UBT) in ‘Saamana’

Mumbai, Sep 14: Launching a scathing attack on the state government on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray on Monday sharply criticised the ruling Mahayuti government for Maharashtra’s compounding socio-economic and political crisis.
The Thackeray camp, in an editorial in the party’s mouthpiece, ‘Saamana’, painted a grim picture of a state “beset by inflation, systemic corruption, agricultural distress, and rising communal polarisation” — arguing that the current rulers themselves have become the single biggest “vighna” (obstacle) confronting Maharashtra and the nation.
The editorial slammed the government for compounding public distress ahead of the festive season. Highlighting steep hikes in the prices of sugar, milk, CNG, domestic LPG, petrol, and diesel, the daily noted that while the common man’s festive budget has been badly hit, devotees will still leave no stone unturned to welcome Lord Ganesha with devotion.
The editorial highlighted the recent physical assault on Pune activist Vidyanand Bapat, who had voiced strong opposition to high-decibel DJ systems during public celebrations. Rather than addressing noise pollution, the ruling establishment branded the activist as an “urban Naxal” and an “outsider”, while the Chief Minister resorted to evasive stances instead of decisive action, it claimed.
Pointing to the severe impact of El Nino, the Thackeray camp warned of a worsening drought across Maharashtra. With Kharif crops wilting in scorched fields and deficient rainfall casting a shadow over the upcoming Rabi season, rural livelihoods are in severe jeopardy while farmer suicides continue unabated.
The editorial also criticised repeated examination paper leaks. Following scandals in NEET and TET, the leak of Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) papers forced the cancellation of exams.
Dismissing the government’s announced SIT probe and administrative reform claims as empty rhetoric, the editorial questioned who would answer for the shattered dreams of thousands of aspiring youths.
Tracing the roots of Lokmanya Tilak’s public Ganesh festival, the editorial lamented that its founding socio-political vision is being eroded by corporate takeover and cheap political posturing.
The editorial further highlighted rising crimes against children, deteriorating roads claiming innocent lives daily, and the government’s failure to enforce local Marathi language norms for non-native auto and taxi drivers.
Concluding with a stark warning, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena asserted that Maharashtra — once a beacon of progressive ideas for the country — has been rendered directionless and pushed into the shadows of religious extremism by “power-drunk and fanatical” rulers.
Calling upon the public to recognise the true root of their hardship, the editorial closed with a direct plea to Lord Ganesha to bestow wisdom upon the populace and save the state.
