Bengaluru, July 29: Karnataka Police on Wednesday registered an FIR against BJP MLA Yashpal Suvarna after he allegedly said that Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi’s family would be “destroyed” in the same manner as the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992.

The FIR was registered by the Udupi Town Police Station based on a complaint filed by Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, president of the Udupi District Congress Committee. Police have invoked Sections 57, 192, 196(2), 352, 353(2), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Addressing a public programme organised by the BJP in Udupi, Suvarna threatened the Congress leadership, stating: “If you continue to enact such dramas, just as our party workers destroyed the Babri Masjid in 1992 when our sentiments were hurt, the Congress dynasty and Rahul Gandhi’s family will likewise be destroyed.”

The remarks have triggered a major political controversy in Karnataka, with the Congress accusing the BJP of resorting to hate speech and intimidation. Video clips of the speech have since gone viral on social media, prompting demands for immediate legal action.

KPCC Working President and MLC, Manjunatha Bhandary, said the Karnataka government had taken the matter seriously and would ensure that strict action is taken in accordance with the law. He described Suvarna’s statements as “hateful, derogatory and provocative” and said they were unbecoming of a public representative who has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution.

Bhandary said that the BJP was attempting to divert attention from the NEET question paper leak controversy and the nationwide protests over the issue by targeting LoP Rahul Gandhi through personal attacks. He also criticised other BJP legislators who were present at the event for failing to condemn the remarks.

“The silence of other elected representatives present at the programme may be construed by the public as tacit support for such statements,” Bhandary said, adding that political differences cannot justify defamation, hate speech or threats.

He further stated that the remarks posed a threat to communal harmony and law and order, particularly in the coastal region, and said he would take up the matter with the State Home Minister to seek appropriate directions for expediting the investigation.

New Delhi, July 29: A professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has been booked by the Kalyanpur police following a complaint filed by his wife, who has alleged domestic violence, physical assault, mental harassment and marital cruelty. The complainant is also a faculty member at IIT Kanpur, serving as an assistant professor.

According to the complaint, the woman married IIT Kanpur professor Nishith Srivastava in December 2012. The couple has two minor children. The woman has alleged that she and her children have been living under constant mental stress and fear for the past several months due to the alleged behaviour of her husband.

In her complaint, the woman has alleged that her husband was involved in a relationship with a married PhD scholar who was working under him in 2022. She has further alleged that since November 2025, he has been involved in another alleged inappropriate relationship with a female professor.

The complainant claimed that when she objected to the alleged relationships, her husband’s behaviour became more aggressive. She alleged that she was pressured to accept the situation and remain silent.

The woman has accused her husband of physical violence and intimidation. She alleged that on November 11, 2025, her husband damaged household items, threw belongings and destroyed her children’s books during an argument. She further alleged that he threatened her with a kitchen knife during the incident.

The complaint also mentions an alleged incident on January 15, 2026. The woman claimed that after she confronted her husband over the alleged relationship, he assaulted her, resulting in injuries to her eye, ear and head.

The complainant has also alleged that on July 5, 2026, her husband attempted to enter the house against her wishes, following which she called security personnel and a dispute took place.

She further alleged that CCTV cameras installed at the residence were being used to continuously monitor her and her children’s activities.

The woman has submitted documents to the police, including photographs of alleged injuries, CCTV-related records, emails sent to the security department, and copies of complaints submitted to the IIT Kanpur police outpost and other officials.

She has requested legal action against her husband and sought protection for herself and her children.

Based on the complaint, Kalyanpur police have registered a case and started an investigation. The allegations have not yet been independently verified.

Bhubaneswar, July 28: Within 24 hours of the gruesome murder of a woman allegedly by her husband in the Chakeisiani area under Mancheswar police station limits, another brutal killing occurred in the same police station area of Odisha’s Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, with a 50-year-old man allegedly beaten to death by his drug-addicted son.

Police identified the victim as S. Duryadhan (50), while the accused, S. Debaraj (25), is his only son.

The deceased Duryadhan worked as a labour contractor.

Upon being informed, the police along with the scientific team immediately reached the crime spot and launched an investigation into the case.

Speaking to reporters, Biswaranjan Senapati, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Zone V), said, “Preliminary investigation suggests that Debaraj killed his father following a dispute over his drug use.”

He also added that accused son was a habitual brown sugar addict and had earlier been admitted to a de-addiction centre by his father.

“Following medical advice, Duryodhan used to mix the prescribed de-addiction medicine into a bidi and ask his son to smoke it whenever he would ask for any normal cigarette or bidi. However, Debaraj disliked the arrangement and frequently engaged in heated arguments with his father over the issue,” Senapati said.

The ACP said a heated argument over the issue erupted on Monday night, forcing the accused’s mother and other family members to leave the house out of fear.

According to Senapati, only the father and son were at home on Tuesday morning when they again got into an argument after the victim offered his son a bidi containing the prescribed medicine, while the latter demanded a regular bidi.

Meanwhile, the accused suddenly went into a fury after Duryadhan insisted and attacked the victim with an iron pipe. He later bludgeoned his father with a stone.

“The family members also told us that the accused has a brain tumour and often gets furious all of a sudden. He has been detained at the police station and will be produced before the court later,” Senapati added.
