Maharashtra Elections 2024: Ajit Pawar To Contest From Baramati, Chhagan Bhujbal From Yeola; NCP Releases First List Of Candidates With 38 Names
Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) released its first list of candidates consisting of 38 names. Dy CM and NCP chief Ajit Pawar will be re-contesting from his hometown Baramati. The list includes other prominent names like Chhagan Bhujbal from Yeola, Hasan Mushrif from Kagal, Dhanahjay Munde from Parali, Dilip Walse-Patil from Ambegaon and other sitting MLAs.
The list was announced by the NCP state president Sunil Tatkare on Wednesday. The party has chosen many familiar faces.
Ajit Pawar Finally Decides To Recontest From Baramati
The Baramati in Pune district, the hometown and political bastion of Pawar family, is one of the hottest seats in Maharashtra. After the split in NCP, the politics in Baramati have taken several twists and turns. In Lok Sabha 2024 polls, the NCP had fielded Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar against the sitting MP and her sister-in-law Supriya Sule, the daughter of Sharad Pawar. In the fierce battle, Supriya Sule from NCP Sharad Pawar faction retained the Baramati LS seat.
After Lok Sabha, it is expected that another Pawar v/s Pawar battle will be witnessed in Baramati. It is likely that the NCP Sharad Pawar faction will field Yugendra Pawar from Baramati assembly seat. Yugendra is son of Ajit Pawar’s younger brother, Shrinivas.
Ajit Pawar had expressed his disinterest in recontesting from Baramati, from where he has been elected as MLA eight-times. There was demand from NCP workers to field his son, Jay Pawar in place Ajit Pawar. The Dy CM was also analysing other seats to contest. However, after the official list declared, it is confirmed that the NCP chief will contest from his home seat.
Other Key Leaders
Other key leaders in the NCP’s first list are Chhagan Bhujbal from Yeola in Nashik district, which his hometown and political bastion, and Dhananjay Munde from his hometown Parali, from where he had defeated his sister BJP’s Pankaja Munde in 2019 assembly polls. State president Sunil Tatkare’s daughter Aditi Tatkare has been remoninated from Shrivardhan in Raigad.
Mahayuti Announces Candidates
All Mahayuti partners, BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP have declared their first lists for the state assembly elections. Raj Thackeray’s MNS also declared the list on Tuesday. However, none of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) parties have announced their candidates yet.

Major hurdle in completion of expansion project in Mumbai railway network, several projects are facing delays due to encroachment on railway lands, RTI reveals

Mumbai: Encroachments on railway land are a major reason for delays in railway projects in Mumbai city. Due to delay in its acquisition, projects have been delayed and their estimates have also increased, this has been revealed in an RTI information filed by RTI activist Anil Gilgali. RTI has revealed that 1,574 encroachments have been identified for two major MRVC rail projects, occupying about 17,000 square meters of land. Information sought by RTI activist Anil Gilgali under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 has revealed that a total of 1,574 encroachments were identified during the acquisition of land for two major rail projects of the Mumbai Rail Development Corporation (MRDC). Out of these, 998 encroachments have been removed so far, while encroachments were found on about 17,068 square meters of land. According to information provided by MRVC to RTI activist Anil Gilgali on July 14, 2026, this information relates to the Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd and 4th rail line projects and the Airoli-Kola elevated corridor project.
Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd and 4th rail line project
According to MRVC, 706 encroachments were identified during the acquisition of land for the 3rd and 4th railway lines of the Central Railway between Kalyan and Badlapur. These include hutments and other structures located on railway land and newly acquired land. Out of these, 620 encroachments have been removed, while encroachments were found on about 9668 square meters of land. MRVC also said that each encroachment occurred in different years, hence it is not possible to identify a specific year. The encroachments identified for the project are located between Kalyan and Badlapur railway stations.
Airoli – Kalwa Elevated Corridor Project.
During land acquisition for the Airoli – Kalwa Elevated Corridor Project, 868 encroachments were identified. These included constructions on railway land and newly acquired land. So far, 378 encroachments have been removed while about 7400 sq m of land was found to be occupied. These encroachments are located between Digha village and Kalwa station. The MRVC also clarified that all the encroachments occurred in different years.
Information on re-encroachments not available
The RTI application also asked in how many areas encroachments were re-established after the encroachments were removed. The MRVC replied that the relevant information was not available.
Anil Gilgali raised important questions.
RTI activist Anil Gilgali said that encroachments have become a serious challenge in railway projects in Mumbai. Encroachments are a major reason for project delays, cost overruns and additional burden on public funds, he said. Mere removal of encroachments is not enough. Railways and MRVC should ensure that no encroachments are created again in the removed areas. Regular monitoring, safeguards and accountability are essential to achieve this.
Gilgali also demanded that information on land acquisition, encroachments, rehabilitation and progress in removal of encroachments for all rail projects be made available on a public portal from time to time, to enhance transparency and provide real-time information to citizens.
He said that availability of land is very important for Mumbai’s rapidly developing rail network. If encroachments are not effectively controlled, many public transport projects in the future may be affected. Therefore, the government, railways and local administration should come together to find a permanent solution.

Thane Crime Branch Cracks Brutal Murder Case; Two Brothers Arrested for Killing Friend and Dumping Body Parts

Thane, July 16: In a major crime-solving breakthrough, the Thane Crime Branch on Thursday unravelled a brutal murder case in which two brothers allegedly killed their close friend, dismembered the body, and dumped the remains at different deserted locations.
The case came to light after Senior Police Inspector Rajesh Gajjal of the Ulhasnagar Unit-4 Crime Branch received a confidential tip-off that auto-rickshaw driver brothers Faiz Malim (24) and Alban Malim (23) had murdered their friend Aman Shaikh (23), a resident of Mumbra. The information further revealed that the accused had allegedly slit the victim’s throat, severed the body into parts, and disposed of the remains separately in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence input and under the directions of Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre, a special Crime Branch team was formed under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police Punjabrao Ugle, Deputy Commissioner of Police Amar Singh Jadhav, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Shekhar Bagde. The team included Senior PI Rajesh Gajjal, API Shrirang Gosavi, and Head Constable Ganesh Gawde.
Police traced and arrested both accused brothers and subjected them to intensive interrogation. During questioning, the brothers allegedly confessed that on the night of July 13, 2026, they murdered Aman Shaikh by slitting his throat. They then dismembered the body, separating the head, hands, and legs, and dumped the remains at isolated locations in Kharadi village to conceal the crime.
Investigators are now working to establish the motive behind the murder, recover all remaining evidence, and reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the killing. Police officials said further investigation is underway.

Siya Goyal’s family asked to halt business after FDA raid

Pune, July 16: In mounting trouble for the family of Siya Goyal, who is accused of allegedly murdering her fiancée Ketan Agarwal, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sealed a Pune shop owned by her father Praveen Goyal, following an inspection.
The family-owned business deals in spices and dry fruits.
Speaking to reporters, Praveen Goyal said, “On Tuesday, July 14, at around 11:30 a.m., officials from the Food and Drug Administration visited my shop. They collected four samples — two samples of ‘haldi’ (turmeric) powder, one of soya chunks, and one of a product called ‘Gavran Til’ (sesame). These are all products that are widely sold in the market, and I have complete purchase bills for them.”
“They have taken the samples and will carry out whatever action is required. The only issue they pointed out was that…I had previously operated from a rented shop, and we have a valid licence for the period 2025 to 2030. However, about six to seven months ago, when I shifted to my own shop, the shop number (Gala No. 348) was inadvertently not updated in the licence,” he mentioned.
Praveen Goyal added: “We have already applied for the correction, and it should be completed within the next 8–10 days. Until then, they have asked me to keep the shop closed, and I am complying with those instructions. Apart from this, there is no other issue.”
Ketan Agarwal was allegedly murdered by his fiancée Siya Goyal and her purported lover Chetan Chaudhary at Lohagad fort near Pune last month.
On Monday, Ketan’s mother Rakhi Agarwal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking speedy justice for her son.
In an email sent to the Prime Minister, Rakhi Agarwal expressed the immense grief her family has endured since Ketan’s murder and underlined that she is not asking for any special favour.
“With folded hands, I humbly request you to kindly ensure that my son’s case receives the attention it deserves and that justice is delivered without unnecessary delay. Please do not let Ketan become just another case file. He was someone’s son, someone’s grandson, someone’s brother, but to me, he was my entire world,” she appealed.
Earlier, the victim’s father, Vishal Agarwal, had written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking a fast-tracked investigation.
