Maha: MVA drops plans to hold Speaker’s election

Published

on

The Maha Vikas Aghadi government dropped plans to conduct the election to the post of Speaker, on the final day of the weeklong Winter Session which ended here on Tuesday.

The move came amid speculation that Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari had reportedly rejected the MVA’s plea to hold the elections through a voice vote instead of secret ballot.

The Governor is said to have indicated that the amendments in the rules to the effect were in violation of the Constitution, though the MVA leaders have contended that it was within the laws and the government’s jurisdiction.

Earlier in the day, the MVA allies Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress leaders met and decided not to pursue the issue to avoid yet another collision with the Raj Bhavan, besides the possible legal or Constitutional implications.

Now, the MVA leaders have hinted that the Speaker’s election may be held only during the Budget Session as the issue remained unresolved despite three letters being sent to the Raj Bhavan.

On the other hand, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has stoutly opposed the amendments to the rules of holding the elections by voice vote instead of secret ballot on various grounds right from the beginning.

Some leaders, including state BJP President Chandrakant Patil, have warned that if the government insisted on going ahead with the polls, it could lead to imposition of President’s Rule in the state — a possibility that the MVA would not exactly relish.

Mumbai, June 13: Police in Maharashtra’s Dongri arrested five accused within 24 hours of registering a case involving the alleged kidnapping, wrongful confinement, assault, and humiliation of a 33-year-old man over a financial dispute.

According to the police, the victim, identified as Sachin Ranpise (33), was held captive, threatened, and subjected to severe mental and physical torture over a loan of Rs 2 lakh. The victim was allegedly denied food and water for nearly 48 hours, beaten with a belt, and paraded naked as part of the abuse.

The incident took place in Mumbai’s Dongri area, where the victim was allegedly held hostage and tortured following a dispute related to the repayment of the loan.

Police said that Sachin had borrowed Rs 2 lakh from one of the accused some time ago. Due to financial difficulties, he was unable to repay the amount on time and had requested an extension. However, the accused allegedly insisted on immediate repayment and subsequently conspired to kidnap and torture him.

According to the complaint, Sachin was forcibly confined in Room No. 104 of the MM Residency Lodge, located near Baba Dargah in Dongri, between June 8 and June 10. During this period, he was allegedly deprived of food and water. The accused reportedly assaulted him repeatedly with a leather belt, causing injuries to his head, arms and back.

The complaint further stated that the accused subjected him to extreme humiliation by stripping him naked and forcing him to walk through the lodge corridor.

On June 11, the victim managed to escape and reached the Dongri Police Station, where he narrated his ordeal. Acting on his complaint and under the guidance of senior officers, the Crime Detection Team immediately launched an investigation.

Although the initial examination of CCTV footage did not provide conclusive evidence, the police, with the help of local intelligence inputs, traced the accused and laid a trap in the Mazgaon area. All five accused were subsequently apprehended.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Abdullah Shaukat Bhusari (21), Junaid Qaymuddin Khan (26), Mohammad Saad Pathan (26), Arafat Hasham Khanani (24), and Sahil Shaikh (25).

Police have also recovered items allegedly used in the commission of the crime from the accused.

Further investigation into the case is underway.

Mumbai, June 13: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested two former executives of the Reliance Anil Ambani Group under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Mumbai, according to officials.

The probe agency took transit remand of Satish Seth and Gautam Doshi, who previously served as directors of Reliance Telecom Ltd.

The CBI had booked and raided the premises of the duo in March as part of its investigation into an alleged loan fraud worth Rs 114.98 crore at the State Bank of India (SBI).

Seth has previously served as Vice Chairman of Reliance Infrastructure. He will be produced in a Delhi court for further custody.

In a statement, a Reliance Group spokesperson said that “Satish Seth (age 70 years) and Gautam Doshi (age 73 years) are not associated with the Group”.

“Seth served the Group as a Group Managing Director and as a Director on the Boards of several companies. Seth left the Group in 2025. Gautam Doshi served the Group as a Group Managing Director and as a Director on the Boards of several companies, both within and outside the Group. Doshi left the Group six years ago, in 2020,” the spokesperson added.

The SBI was a member of the consortium of 11 banks which had sanctioned a total of Rs 735 crore Term Loan facility to Reliance Telecom Ltd, the CBI had said. The ED is understood to have taken cognisance of this CBI complaint and is investigating the roles of Seth and Doshi in this bank loan fraud case.

Earlier in June, the CBI had arrested Reliance Communications’ former Group Managing Director, Amitabh Jhunjhunwala, in connection with the loss of Rs 2,929.05 crore caused to the SBI by the company in alleged loan fraud, officials said. He was produced before the court, following which the CBI formally arrested him.

Meanwhile, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Thursday admitted a plea filed by the SBI and initiated personal insolvency resolution proceedings against industrialist Anil Ambani in his capacity as a personal guarantor for loans extended to Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Reliance Infratel Ltd (RITL).

Reacting to the decision, a spokesperson for Anil Ambani said that the order, once available, will be reviewed by his legal team and challenged through appropriate legal remedies, as advised. “Mr Ambani remains confident of vindicating his position before the appropriate forums,” the spokesperson added.
