Kejriwal wants to control Punjab, be undercover CM: Oppn parties
Chandigarh, Feb 26: As the buzz over Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s entry into Rajya Sabha through nomination intensified after the party on Wednesday announced that it would field its MP Sanjeev Arora in the Ludhiana (West) Assembly bypoll, Opposition parties in Punjab trained guns on the party.
They said, “Kejriwal wants to control the state by becoming the undercover Chief Minister.”
“Once again, Punjab has been made to surrender before Delhi,” they added.
However, AAP leaders denied Kejriwal was opting for the Rajya Sabha route.
Congress legislator Sukhpal Singh Khaira claimed that Kejriwal would replace Arora in the Upper House.
“If Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora is nominated as AAP candidate for the Ludhiana (West) bypoll, I am sure Arvind Kejriwal will take his Rajya Sabha membership!” Khaira said in a post on X.
Echoing similar sentiments, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa believed that work had started as per the plan made by Kejriwal.
“If Kejriwal becomes a Rajya Sabha member, he will control Punjab by becoming the undercover Chief Minister. The face will be of Bhagwant Mann, but the control will be of Kejriwal,” he said.
After this, he wrote on X, the people of Delhi “will create such a situation that Bhagwant Mann sahib will be removed on some pretext and Arvind Kejriwal himself will become the Chief Minister.”
Joining the issue, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia said power hungry Kejriwal was seeking a Rajya Sabha nomination and this was the reason why the party had forced its sitting MP Sanjiv Arora to vacate a Rajya Sabha seat for him.
In a statement here, former minister Majithia said the AAP’s game plan was to use the government’s might to get Arora elected to the Vidhan Sabha so that a Rajya Sabha seat is vacated in the state.
“Kejriwal wants to get twin benefits including a government bungalow in his name in the national Capital as well as the perks and power of an MP,” he said.
The Akali Dal leader said it was most shameful to see that during the last three years Bhagwant Mann as Chief Minister had completely surrendered at the feet of the AAP high command in Delhi.
He said earlier the treasury of Punjab was looted for preaching the AAP’s failed Kejriwal model throughout the country and now he was seeking a nomination to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab.
Saying this bye-election is to prepare cadres for the future polls, AAP’s Punjab spokesperson Neel Garg, dubbed the claims of the Opposition as rumours regarding either party supremo Kejriwal or Sisodia replacing Arora in the Rajya Sabha.
“The BJP rumour mills are working overtime. As of now, the election for Ludhiana (West) has not even been announced. Arora has been chosen as the party candidate because of his popularity in Ludhiana. He has not even resigned from the Rajya Sabha membership. He can’t contest the bye-election without resigning,” Garg told the media here.
Justifying the party’s decision, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Sandhwan said a party can nominate anyone to the Rajya Sabha from anywhere.
“It’s their right. What is the illegality in this? Even Manmohan Singh went to the Rajya Sabha from another state. The party will decide who will be fielded and anyone they field I will welcome it,” Sandhwan said.
The Ludhiana (West) seat fell vacant with the demise of Gurpreet Gogi Bassi, 58, who died after sustaining a gunshot wound in his head at his house last month.
The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the election schedule for the seat.
AAP’s legislator Gogi joined the AAP in 2022 and defeated two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu during the 2022 Assembly elections.
Responding to the nomination, candidate Arora wrote on X, “Humbled and grateful to the leadership @AamAadmiParty for reposing faith in me to contest the Ludhiana West bye-elections. As someone deeply connected to my hometown, I look forward to serving my people with dedication and sincerity.”
The seven Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab are Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, cricketer Harbhajan Singh, educationist Ashok Mittal, environmentalist-cum-religious leader Balbir Singh Seechewal, entrepreneur Vikramjit Singh Sahney, besides Sanjeev Arora.
Kejriwal lost the New Delhi seat to BJP’s Parvesh Verma in the just-concluded Assembly elections.

Shrikant Shinde vows to expose Pakistan’s terror nexus on global stage, thanks PM Modi for key role
Mumbai, May 17: Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Eknath Shinde on Saturday expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for appointing him to lead one of the all-party delegations that will travel to key partner nations to highlight India’s resolute stance against terrorism.
The mission comes in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent people and involved two Pakistani terrorists.
Shinde said the delegation would clearly articulate India’s zero-tolerance policy on terrorism and unmask Pakistan’s continued patronage of terror elements operating from its soil.
These comments come as the Indian government gears up to dispatch seven bipartisan delegations to prominent global capitals as part of its diplomatic counteroffensive.
Writing on X, Shinde said, “Nation Always First..!! As part of ‘Operation Sindoor’ and India’s ongoing efforts to combat cross-border terrorism, seven all-party delegations are scheduled to visit key partner nations, including members of the United Nations Security Council, later this month.”
“I have the honour of leading one of these delegations. We will firmly convey to the international community that terrorism has no place in India, and that it is Pakistan which continues to nurture terrorism on its own soil,” he added.
He further underlined the importance of political unity on such issues.
“When it comes to matters of national interest, there is no division, only duty. It is a privilege to serve my country in this capacity, and I will carry out this sacred responsibility with unwavering devotion and a resolute commitment to India’s zero tolerance stance against terrorism,” Shinde stated.
He concluded his message with a note of gratitude: “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government for entrusting me with this important responsibility. Jai Hind!!”
The delegations will include Members of Parliament Shashi Tharoor from the Congress, Baijayant Panda and Ravi Shankar Prasad from the BJP, Sanjay Kumar Jha from the JD(U), Kanimozhi Karunanidhi from the DMK, Supriya Sule from the NCP (SP), and Shrikant Shinde from the Shiv Sena.
These leaders are expected to visit several important nations such as the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Africa, Egypt, and Japan later this month.
According to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the initiative is aimed at presenting a unified Indian political front against terrorism while building international consensus to hold Pakistan accountable for fostering terror on its territory.
Other Members of Parliament expected to be part of the delegations include BJP leaders Anurag Thakur, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, and Tejasvi Surya, TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, Congress MP Manish Tewari, and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
Mumbai, May 17: The Maharashtra government, on Friday, in a bureaucratic reshuffle transferred 27 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the state.
Prasad Akkanvaru, who is the principal of the police training centre at Marol, has been appointed as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police of Maharashtra State Security Corporation; Pune Rural Superintendent of Police, Pankaj Deshmukh, as Pune Additional Police Commissioner; A. Gavkar, who is the Deputy Police Commissioner (Prohibition) as DIG state CID (administration); G. Shridhar, who is the DIG of State CID has DIG, police communication in department of information technology and transport; and Mokshada Patil, who is Commander in State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) has been appointed as SRPF DIG.
The state government has transferred Rakesh Kalasagar, Commander in SRPF as Railways Commissioner; Priyanka Narnavare, Commander in SRPF as Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) in Mumbai; Arvind Salve, Superintendent of Police of highway security as Joint Director of Maharashtra Police Academy, Nashik; Suresh Mengde, Superintendent of Police and Chief Security Officer, CIDCO in the same post after his promotion as DIG; and Dhananjay Kulkarni, Superintendent of Police of Ratnagiri as Additional Police Commissioner in special branch, Mumbai.
The government has transferred Vijay Magar, principal of police training centre at Latur as SRPF DIG in Pune; Rajesh Bansode, Superintendent of Police in wireless department, Pune, as Additional Police Commissioner, Pune city; Vikram Deshmane, Superintendent of Police in Nashik rural as Additional Police Commissioner Central Regional Division, Mumbai; and Rajendra Dabhade, Superintendent of Police, civil rights protection at Thane as Additional Police Commissioner, Nagpur.
The government has transferred S.T. Rathod, Additional Police Commissioner (South) in Nagpur as DIG anti-narcotics task force, P.P. Shevale, Additional Police Commissioner (North) in Nagpur as DIG in anti-terrorist force, Mumbai; A.H. Chavaria, Additional Police Commissioner (Administration) in Pune city as Police Commissioner in Amravati and Vinita Sahu, Additional Police Commissioner (protection and security) in Mumbai as Additional Police Commissioner of Armed Police Force, Mumbai.
The government has transferred Anil Paraskar, additional police commissioner, central regional division, Mumbai, as additional police commissioner protection and security, Mumbai; Shailesh Balkawde, additional police commissioner (crime), Pune city, as additional police commissioner (crime), Mumbai; M. Ramkumar, additional police commissioner (traffic), Mumbai, as director of Maharashtra state intelligence institute, Pune; Shashikumar Meena, additional police commissioner (crime), Mumbai, as additional police commissioner, Nagpur city; and Aarti Singh, who was on waiting for her posting, as the joint police commissioner (Intelligence), Mumbai.
The government has shifted Pravin Patil, additional police commissioner (south west division), Pune city, as additional police commissioner, Nagpur city; Sanjay Patil, additional police commissioner (crime), Nagpur city, as additional police commissioner, Pune city; Vasant Pardeshi, additional police commissioner, Pimpri Chinchwad, as additional police commissioner, Nagpur city; and S.D. Cong proposed 4 names for India’s anti-terror global outreach; Tharoor didn’t figure in list
New Delhi, May 17: Just a while after the Centre announced the names of seven Members of Parliament (MPs) who would lead Indian delegations abroad to expose Pakistan’s role in the recent Pahalgam terror attack, the Congress on Saturday revealed its own list of nominated MPs that it had sent to the government for the endeavour and notably senior leader and former diplomat Shashi Tharoor’s name was missing from the list.
While Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has named Tharoor as one of the leaders of the delegations alongside MPs from other parties, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh’s post revealed that the list of four MPs sent to the government by the party did not mention Tharoor among them.
“Yesterday morning, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, spoke with the Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The INC was asked to submit names of 4 MPs for the delegations to be sent abroad to explain India’s stance on terrorism from Pakistan,” Jairam Ramesh posted on X.
He added that by noon on May 16, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi had written to Rijiju with four names on behalf of the party: Former Union Minister Anand Sharma, Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, Rajya Sabha member Syed Naseer Hussain, and Lok Sabha MP Raja Brar.
India has decided to send seven All-Party Delegations to strategic partner nations, including members of the UN Security Council, with the objective of presenting a united stance on cross-border terrorism and exposing Pakistan’s alleged involvement in the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 people.
The delegations will include MPs from different political parties, prominent figures, and senior diplomats.
The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has named Shashi Tharoor (Congress), Ravi Shankar Prasad (BJP), Baijayant Panda (BJP), Sanjay Kumar Jha (JDU), Kanimozhi Karunanidhi (DMK), Supriya Sule (NCP-SP), and Shrikant Eknath Shinde (Shiv Sena) as those expected to lead the delegations.
According to the Ministry, these delegations are expected to visit key partner countries such as the United States, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Africa, Egypt, and Japan later this month.
