India reports 795 fresh Covid cases, 58 deaths

India reported below 1,000 cases for the second consecutive day on Tuesday after 795 new Covid cases were recorded in a span of 24 hours.

In the same period, 58 Covid related deaths were redistered taking the total number of deaths to 5,21,416, said the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs.

Following a continuous downward trend, India’s active caseload has declined to 12,054. Active cases now constitute 0.03 per cent of the country’s total positive cases.

A total of 1,280 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours and the cumulative tally of recovered patients since the beginning of the pandemic is now at 4,24,96,369. Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.76 per cent.

Also in the same period, a total of 4,66,332 tests were conducted across the country. India has so far conducted over 79.15 crore cumulative tests.

There has been a sustained fall in the weekly and daily positivity rates too. The Weekly positivity rate in the country currently stands at 0.22 per cent and the daily positivity rate is also reported to be 0.17 per cent.

On the vaccination front, India’s Covid-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 184.87 crore as per the provisional reports till 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Over 1.92 crore adolescents have been administered with the first dose of Covid vaccine since the beginning of vaccination drive for this age bracket.

More than 15.55 crore balance and unutilised Covid vaccine doses are still available with the states and union territories to be administered, according to the health ministry as of Tuesday morning.

Mumbai Tragedy: 8-Year-Old Boy Dies After Falling Into Water-Filled Construction Pit In Malad

Mumbai, March 20: An eight-year-old boy died after falling into a water filled construction pit in Malad East on Thursday, March 19 while attempting to retrieve a ball, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 8:00 pm at Chagan Patel Chawl, Ambewadi, in Kurar Village. The boy, identified as Divyansh Rajesh Mourya (8), had reportedly gone to retrieve a ball when he accidentally fell into a pit excavated by Mauli Construction.

According to police officials from Kurar Village Police Station, the pit was filled with water, which made the situation critical. Upon receiving information, police personnel rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation. The child was pulled out of the pit and immediately shifted to Bharatratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali for treatment.

However, despite efforts to save him, the attending Assistant Medical Officer (AMO) declared the boy dead at the hospital.

The case was later confirmed by the concerned Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) from Kurar Village Police Station.

Further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be ascertained.

This news comes in a month after a tragic accident occurred in Subhash Nagar, Chembur, when six workers fell from the sixth floor of an under-construction building, leaving one dead and five seriously injured.

The incident took place at the “Adityaraj Springs” project, a G+16-storey tower being constructed as part of the redevelopment of Building No. 36 in the area. Construction work has been completed up to the eighth floor.

According to civic officials, 55-year-old Ramallu lost his life in the accident. The injured have been identified as Gunadhar Rai (22) whose condition is critical, Usrai (30), Ramesh Rai (25), Vijay (35), and Sandeep (27).

Residents alleged that the workers were not provided with essential safety gear such as helmets and safety belts. The incident has once again raised serious concerns over adherence to safety norms at construction sites in the city.

Mumbai Accident: Elderly Woman Hit By Garbage Truck Near Shitladevi Metro Station In Mahim; Suffers Heavy Blood Loss

Mumbai: An elderly woman was seriously injured after being hit by a garbage dumper truck in Mahim on a busy stretch. Disturbing visuals showed the woman in glaring pain. The incident took place near the Mumbai Metro 3’s Shitladevi Mandir Metro Station in Mahim.

The victim was attempting to cross the road when the garbage dumper truck hit her. The dumper, reportedly moving at speed, struck her, leaving her with severe injuries and heavy blood loss. Visuals also showed locals rushing to help and taking her to the nearest hospital.

Currently, there is no update on her condition. Though visuals showed police and traffic police on the scene, it is yeh not known if any case was registered against the garbage dumper truck.

Meanwhile, in another recent accident case, three students of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay were killed after their car met with an accident on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway near Lonavala on Thursday morning while returning from Khandala, where they had gone to watch the sunrise.

The deceased, identified as Omkumar Borse (23), a resident of Nashik; Lay (20), from Nagpur; and Shreyansh Sharma (22), from Jaipur, were travelling in a Volkswagen Polo when the accident occurred. Police officials said that the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, as there were no eyewitnesses at the scene.

Mumbai Local: 395 Without Tickets Fined At Ghatkopar During Evening Peak Hours, Central Railways Collects Over ₹1 Lakh Fine

Mumbai: A special ‘fortress’ ticket-checking drive by Central Railway at Ghatkopar station during peak evening hours caught hundreds of ticketless passengers, with authorities collecting a whopping fine of over Rs 1 lakh in a day.

According to the update shared by DRM Central Railway, the drive was held on Tuesday, March 18, during the evening peak hours. During the intensive checking operation, “395 ticketless passengers were caught, and a Rs 1,02,260/- penalty was imposed.”

Notably, Ghatkopar railway station sees heavy passenger footfall as commuters from both Central and Western lines connect here due to its direct Metro Line 1 link between Ghatkopar and Andheri, making it a major boarding hub.

Meanwhile, on the same day, a special drive was also held at Mulund station, where the authorities caught 315 ticketless passengers, and a fine of Rs 74,860 was collected in a day.

There has been a rise in ticketless travel cases across Mumbai, with special checking drives being conducted at multiple railway stations. Hundreds of passengers are being caught every day during these operations.

On March 16 and 17, special ticket-checking drives were carried out at Asangaon, Titvala, Ambernath and Badlapur stations. At Asangaon, 312 ticketless passengers were caught and fined, and Rs 78,290 was collected, while 305 passengers at Titvala were penalised, collecting Rs 75,345 in fine.

On March 16, a separate drive at Ambernath and Badlapur during evening peak hours caught 763 ticketless travellers, with a total fine of Rs 1,88,620 collected. Last week, a similar drive was held at Vashi railway station, resulting in action against 393 passengers, with authorities collecting Rs 1,02,260 in fines in a single day.
