India logs 7,946 new Covid cases, 37 deaths

 In the last 24 hours, India logged 7,946 new Covid-19 cases and 37 deaths, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday.

The new fatalities have increased the nationwide death toll to 5,27,911.

The active caseload of the country has dipped to 62,748, accounting for 0.14 per cent of the country’s total positive cases.

The recovery of 9,828 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,38,45,680. Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 98.67 per cent.

While the daily positivity rate rose to 2.98 per cent, the weekly positivity rate stood at 2.57 per cent.

Also in the same period, a total of 2,66,477 tests were conducted across the country, increasing the overall tally to over 88.61 crore.

As of Thursday morning, India’s Covid-19 vaccination coverage exceeded 212.52 crore, achieved via 2,12,52,259 sessions

Over 4.03 crore adolescents have been administered with a first dose of Covid-19 jab since the beginning of vaccination drive for this age bracket.

Mumbai: I am very happy that various services have been inaugurated to provide the citizens of Mumbai with the latest equipment and medical facilities. Through these facilities, quality health facilities will be provided to the citizens. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said that the availability of latest equipment is important to improve the life expectancy of the people of Mumbai. Ritu Tawde (Today, May 8, 2026) At a program organized at Seth Gordhandas Sundardas Medical College and Raje Edward Memorial Hospital (Parel). K.E.M. Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as well as a mammography machine, surgical pathology seminar hall and physiology seminar hall were inaugurated. Tawde earlier, Paediatrics, Blood Disorders, Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre were also inaugurated at Lok Nite Eknath Rao Gaikwad Urban Health Centre in Dharavi, affiliated to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Corporation General Hospital.

Public Health Committee Chairman Mr. Harish Bhanderge, Local Corporator Karan Tawde, Local Corporator Rachna Shinde, Deputy Commissioner (Public Health) Mr. Sharad Uday, Director (Medical Education and Major Hospitals) Dr. Shailendra Mohte, Dean Dr. Pramod Angale, Dean Dr. Harish Pathak, Rumana Hameed of Vaha Foundation and other dignitaries were present.

On this occasion, Mayor Ritu Tawde said that the people of Mumbai will benefit a lot from the medical facilities provided by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. I am proud that the latest and quality services are available through the Burhan Mumbai Municipal Corporation Hospital. I am happy that I got the honor of inaugurating the Mammography Plant which is very important for women’s health. Breast cancer is a serious challenge for women’s health. But this disease can be controlled through timely screening, timely diagnosis and proper treatment. With the availability of mammography equipment in the hospital, women do not need to go anywhere else for screening. This equipment will strengthen the habit of regular screening among women. The Mayor said that the delay in diagnosis will be reduced and the health security of the family will be strengthened. With the aim of empowering the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a clean, safe and technically competent Intensive Care Unit service was made available today.

Newborns born prematurely, underweight or requiring immediate medical attention after birth will be able to get treatment from this department. This facility will make the care of newborns more efficient and enable infection control, Mayor Smt. Ritu Tawde also mentioned.

On the occasion of ‘World Thalassemia Day’ (8th May), the Paediatrics, Blood Disorders, Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre was inaugurated by the Mayor Smt. Ritu Tawde today (8th May 2026) at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Corporation General Hospital, Loknete Eknath Rao Gaikwad Urban Health Centre (Dharvi). With the joint efforts of Mumbai Municipal Corporation and ‘Veha Foundation’, services have been provided to needy patients suffering from serious diseases. Through this centre, 6 hospital beds, day care chemotherapy room, inpatient facilities have been provided. This facility has been made available especially for the economically weaker sections. Proud Mayor Smt. Ritu Tawde said that Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Corporation General Hospital is proud to be the first hospital to provide bone marrow transplant treatment. On the occasion of Thalassemia Day, an initiative of Thalassemia screening was launched by the Biochemistry Department of the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Corporation General Hospital and Medical College for the employees and officers of the hospital. Along with getting modern technology-based services through the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, the economically weaker sections of the society will also benefit from these facilities. Mumbai: Mafia kingpin Dawood Ibrahim’s right-hand man and drug smuggler Salim Dola was arrested by the Central Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on charges of drug trafficking, but today the court has sent him to judicial custody. The defense lawyer told the court that Salim Dola should not be kept in judicial custody in Arthur Road. The court rejected this and ordered that Dola be kept in Arthur Road. Salim Dola was brought to Mumbai through extradition. The Mumbai Crime Branch has filed an application in the Fort Court to get his custody. However, the court has not taken any decision in this regard yet. When Salim Dola appeared in court, the defense lawyer had requested the court not to keep him in Arthur Road Jail. When the defense lawyer asked the defense lawyer whether Salim Dola’s life was in danger from his enemies and other prisoners and gangs, the defense lawyer called it a personal conversation between the lawyer and the client and said that his client had told him that he should be kept in Arthur Road Jail. The court has dismissed him and further investigation is underway with Saleem Dola in this case. In this regard, the Crime Branch has also now sought Saleem Dola’s custody. The Mumbai Crime Branch will question Saleem Dola in the case of exposing drug factories in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Saleem Dola is said to be an international drug smuggler.

Mumbai Deonar Slaughter House Ready for Eid-ul-Adha, Mandi to be Held from 17th to 30th May 2026 : Ashwini Joshi

The BMC administration has claimed to have made necessary arrangements for the backdrop of Eid-ul-Adha at the Mumbai Deonar Slaughterhouse. The municipal corporation administration is ready to provide various facilities at the Deonar Slaughterhouse on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha. This mainly includes CCTV control, appointment of security guards, parking lot, cafeteria, etc. Arrangements are being made for this. Apart from this, action is also being taken regarding solid waste management, security, health, pesticides, complaint redressal room, etc. Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr. (Mrs.) Ashwini Joshi has informed that buffalo and goat market will be organized at the Deonar Aabgah from 17 to 30 May 2026. As per the instructions of Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, various facilities are being provided at the Deonar Slaughterhouse under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr. Ashwini Joshi. This year, the festival of Eid is likely to be celebrated on 28th May 2026. In this backdrop, a review meeting was recently held at the Municipal Corporation Headquarters to review the preparations made by various departments and other agencies of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation in Deonar.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr. Ashwani Joshi informed that permission has been given for Qurbani (sacrifice) at a total of 109 places in the Municipal Corporation area from 28th to 30th May 2026 by the Market Department of the Municipal Corporation on the occasion of the festival of Eid. If the slaughter is to be done at these specific places or at other places, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has provided a facility to apply for permission in the MyBMC mobile application this year. For this, citizens will have to register on the app. In addition, online arrangements have been made for import licenses of buffaloes and goats for sacrifice as well as slot booking on the website https://www.mcgm.gov.in. The computerized weed allocation system will work on the principle of ‘first come, first served’. However, as per the slaughter policy, buffaloes are mandatory to be sacrificed only at Deonar Abattoir.

A 24-hour control room will be set up to deal with citizen complaints and emergencies. Dedicated helpline numbers 9076000481, 9076000482, 9076000483, 9076000484 will be made available to provide immediate assistance to the citizens.

Various facilities provided at Deonar Slaughter House
A total of 110,106 square meters of permanent shelter is being arranged for animals in Deonar, which covers 32,256 square meters and temporary 77,850 square meters. In addition, 10,000 square meters of space is being provided for buffalo sacrifice. In addition to 1.3 million liters (MLD) of water per day, there will be an additional facility of 1 million liters of water. Watering canopies will be installed at 10 locations for citizens. Apart from this, about 150 water tanks will be arranged at different locations. Health centers, 2 ambulances for citizens, 2 primary veterinary health centers for animals and a veterinarian will be appointed for health check-ups. During the 15 days of Eid-ul-Adha festival, 215 sanitation workers, 6 pick-up vans, 3 JCBs, 3 dumpers along with 2 special vehicles to transport dead animals are being arranged in three shifts every day in Deonar Slaughterhouse and its surrounding areas. In addition, 600 sanitation workers will be deployed to maintain cleanliness in the area during the three days of animal slaughter. No entry fee will be charged for allowing citizens’ vehicles to carry meat to the Deonar Slaughterhouse area during the animal slaughter period. For the sake of law and order, around 500 police officers/employees will be deployed at Deonar Slaughterhouse along with 21 police posts, 2 observation towers and 200 security guards of the Municipal Corporation. In addition, 210 permanent cameras including 170 bullet cameras, 34 dome cameras, 06 PTZ cameras, and CCTV system with video wall will work for surveillance in the entire area. 80 temporary cameras will be installed inside the buildings and 52 additional cameras will be installed in the outdoor areas and parking areas. A QR code based inspection and verification system will be installed at every entry and exit point in the area. Due to which the process of entry and exit of animals and registration can be done more accurately, quickly and with control. Along with a 250-seat public toilet along the protective wall of the Deonar slaughterhouse, 15 permanent and 100 mobile toilets are being provided in the inner area. In addition, a separate bathroom is being arranged for women. In view of the monsoon, water pumping sets are being provided for water drainage.

Other arrangements have been made, including 2 fire engines of the fire department. Not only this, a cantonment has also been arranged for the public.
