Death Of Accused In Salman Khan Firing Case: Bombay HC Reserves Order In Mother’s Plea Alleging Foul Play

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has reserved its order on a plea filed by Rita Devi, mother of Anuj Thapan—the accused in the firing outside actor Salman Khan’s residence who died by suicide in custody—seeking a CBI probe into his death, alleging foul play.
A bench of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Neela Gokhale also directed the State to show the relevant portion of the CCTV footage to Devi’s advocate after he raised doubts over the magisterial inquiry report, which ruled Thapan’s death a suicide.
In December last year, the HC had observed that the 18-year-old’s demise did not appear to be a custodial death. It also noted that the police had no apparent reason to harm him, as he could have been helpful in their investigation.
Thapan was found hanging in the toilet of the crime branch lock-up at Crawford Market on May 1, 2024. Police claimed he used a bedsheet to take the extreme step. A mandatory magisterial inquiry was conducted, and a report was submitted to the HC. The CID, which also investigated the case, submitted a separate report.
During the hearing on Wednesday, advocate Nishant Rana pointed out discrepancies between the magistrate’s and the CID’s reports. “Some facts are totally opposite in the reports,” he said.
However, State advocate Prajakta Shinde clarified that the CID report submitted on May 15, 2024, was only an interim report based on an Accidental Death Report and that the probe has since been concluded.
Rana, however, insisted there was a conspiracy to kill Thapan. He claimed Thapan had told his mother that police beat him with a belt and that he was seen with a knife borrowed from an inmate. However, the magisterial report stated he was seen entering the washroom with a rope.
“As per the magistrate’s report, he (Thapan) was seen carrying a rope when he went to the washroom. It is also said that he borrowed a knife from an inmate. Why would he go through the trouble of hanging himself? He could have simply cut his veins,” Rana argued.
The judges, however, reiterated that they had reviewed the CCTV footage and “found nothing.”
When Rana pointed out that the magistrate’s report did not mention Call Data Records (CDR), the bench questioned, “He died in custody. Where is the question of CDR?”
The court then closed the plea for orders.
On April 14, 2024, two motorcycle-borne men opened fire outside Galaxy Apartments in Bandra, where Khan resides with his family. The alleged shooters, Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal, were later arrested in Gujarat. Thapan and an associate were apprehended in Punjab on April 26 for allegedly supplying firearms and ammunition for the shooting. Police claimed he had links to gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the case under the stringent MCOCA.

Row over Aurangzeb’s tomb: Nagpur flare-up occurred after hours of mayhem in Mahal

Nagpur/Mumbai, March 18: As various parts of Nagpur remain under curfew following communal tension over the Aurangzeb tomb controversy, it has been learnt that the unrest began in the early hours of Monday in Mahal, one of the oldest localities of the city.
The Police prevented the chaos from deepening into communal strife but as the evening set in, the ‘charged atmosphere’ in some localities resulted in wide-scale violence by the mob.
Senior-rank police officers including 3 DCPs and 1 SP were injured in stone-pelting and vandalism incidents, while more than 32 vehicles were set ablaze by the mob, which apparently got instigated over the reported desecration of ‘chadar’ with holy texts written on it.
According to the police report, the violence didn’t happen all of a sudden. The tensions simmered since morning and reached a boiling point with the onset of dusk.
Here is a detailed break-up of how the communal unrest happened.
Initial reports attributed the violence in parts of Nagpur to rumours of the desecration of a holy book, during a demonstration by Hindu outfit members demanding the removal of Mughal ruler Aurganzeb’s tomb in the Khuldabad area.
media is in possession of the police report, which narrates the chain of events and ‘triggers’ leading to communal unrest and violence.
As per the Nagpur police report, a group of locals had assembled in the Mahal area at around 11.30 a.m. to protest against the alleged sacrilege of the holy chadar, however, they were denied permission and also persuaded by the cops to return.
The gathering of the Muslim community was followed by a demonstration by VHP and Bajrang Dal members on Monday morning, who raised slogans against the Mughal ruler and called for razing of the Aurangzeb’s tomb.
The police also booked some of these protestors from the Hindu outfits under Section 227, Section 37 (1) (3) and Section 229.
The unrest that started in the morning, erupted into alarming proportions after the noon namaz, at around 1.30 p.m.
About 200-250 Muslims gathered near Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Nagpur’s Mahal area, where police personnel were already present.
They claimed that the VHP and Bajran Dal supporters had burnt a ‘chadar’ (green cloth) with sacred verses written on it. With tempers rising on both sides, the situation could have escalated into a serious communal flare-up but the police intervened and prevented the crowd from going on rampage.
Following this, leaders from the Muslim community lodged a complaint with the police station and were given assurance by the top cop of stringent action on the ‘rogue elements’, responsible for hurting their religious beliefs.
However, the situation again turned volatile as more than 200 people, from the specific community, with their faces covered and armed with rods, hit the streets in the Hansapuri area and went on a rampage, torching vehicles and vandalizing public properties.
The mob of protesters not only raised provocative slogans but also pelted stones at shops and houses in the area.
According to police reports, more than a dozen vehicles were torched and many shops vandalized by the mob.
A communal flare-up was reported from Tehsil Agrasen Chowk, where the members of two communities engaged in slogan-shouting and stone-pelting. A person was injured in stone-pelting while many vehicles were burnt and damaged.
In the Ganesh Peth area also, hooligans and vandals run amok on the streets and pelted stones at the police personnel. Attempts were also made to set the police vehicles on fire. Police tried to disperse the crowd but they came under attack by the stone-pelters.
According to police inputs, at least one crane, 2 JCBs, 3 cars, and more than 20 motorcycles were burnt while public properties were damaged by the unruly mob.
More than 47 protesters have been taken into custody so far. Many police officials including senior officers to the rank of DCP and SP were injured in violence by the mob. At least 33 policemen are reported to have suffered injuries, with 14-15 suffering serious injuries.
The Nagpur police have also launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the stone pelters and vandals, who attacked the police and fire brigade personnel. A huge contingent of SRPF and RAF personnel remains deployed in sensitive zones to keep the situation under control and prevent any further flare-ups.
Meanwhile, the areas of Nagpur where curfew has been imposed include Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Lakadganj, Pachpaoali, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodhara Nagar and Kapil Nagar.
People have been asked to stay indoors and not pay heed to rumours.

Nagpur Violence: AIMIM Leaders Slam BJP For ‘Spreading Hate’ While Condemning Unrest; Call For Strict Action

Nagpur: AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan has condemned the recent violence in Nagpur, stating that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. “We strongly denounce the violence in Nagpur. The government must take strict legal action against those responsible,” he said.
Pathan further criticised the BJP, accusing some party members of inciting hatred. “We have consistently demanded action against those who spread hate. Instead of addressing real issues, the BJP is distracting people by raising a 400-year-old Aurangzeb issue,” he added.
AIMIM’s Imtiaz Jaleel Appeals For Peace
AIMIM Maharashtra president Imtiaz Jaleel also responded, urging citizens to maintain peace. Taking to social media platform X, he posted, “At any cost, come what may we have to maintain ‘PEACE.’ Let us not fall prey to the dirty games of politicians and media. Let’s stand united at this hour.”
CM Devendra Fadnavis Appeals For Peace & Calls For Stern Action
The violence erupted amid ongoing controversy surrounding the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Sambhajinagar, leading to clashes between two groups in Nagpur. The unrest involved stone-pelting and arson, leading a strong response from the authorities.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is closely monitoring the situation and has directed the police commissioner to take strict action against those responsible for inciting violence. In a video statement, CM Fadnavis condemned the incident, calling it “highly unfortunate.”
“The tension in Nagpur’s Mahal area is deeply regrettable. Some individuals resorted to stone-pelting, even targeting the police, which is completely unacceptable. I am personally keeping a close watch on the developments,” he stated.
Fadnavis has ordered the police to take all necessary steps to maintain law and order. He assured that the government will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt peace and has directed officials to implement the strictest possible measures against rioters.
Appealing for calm, the chief minister said, “Nagpur is a city of peace-loving people. Everyone must act responsibly to ensure harmony. Anyone attempting to create unrest will face severe consequences.”
50 Arrested For Arson & Clashes
At least 50 people were arrested following violent clashes in central Nagpur late Monday night. The unrest left dozens injured, including 10 anti-riot commandos, two senior police officers, and two firefighters. One constable remains in critical condition. Mobs set fire to two bulldozers and 40 vehicles, including police vans, as authorities struggled to regain control.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal responded by deploying over 1,000 officers and enforcing prohibitory orders in Mahal, Chitnis Park Chowk and Bhaldarpura, areas deemed high-risk. Key roads were barricaded, and additional reinforcements and intelligence teams were mobilized to prevent further violence.
