Bold, arrow-sharp voice fallen silent: Maha leaders express grief over Nana Patekar’s demise
Mumbai, Oct 8: Ruling and opposition party leaders on Thursday expressed grief over the demise of veteran actor Nana Patekar, saying his passing was a major loss of a titan of acting and also of Maharashtra’s pride.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Frankness and fearlessness – these traits defined his personality. But ever since I became Chief Minister, I’ve always seen the tender human within him. When we took up the Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan, Nana himself stepped forward to support it. Along with Makarand Anaspure, he joined hands to establish the Naam Foundation and personally went into the villages to work. Whether it was aiding farmers or extending a helping hand during times of drought, Nana always led from the front. Even this year, as we face the drought, Nana would never have lagged behind – but he left us so suddenly. I offer my heartfelt tribute to him. We share in the sorrow of his family and fans.”
He further stated, “Nana was as grand on screen as he was in spirit. He gifted an entire era to Marathi and Hindi cinema. From that, it was primarily his image as a patriot that resonated deeply with audiences. From ‘Krantiveer’ to ‘Natsamrat’, the powerful and masterful tapestry of acting he wove in his journey has no equal. Thus, his departure as an actor is a profound loss.”
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said Maharashtra and the nation have lost a sensitive, powerful actor and, in the truest sense, a ‘Nat Samrat’. Maharashtra’s pride and the Marathi man’s honour have been lost today. “Maharashtra’s bold, arrow-sharp voice has fallen silent. I have lost a true, big-hearted friend. This loss can never be compensated. An actor like him is born only once in a century. His final dream was to start a school for children in Kashmir, and I consider it my duty to provide all possible help to fulfil that. That alone will be the true tribute to Nana Patekar,” he added.
He noted, “Without any godfather, solely on the strength of his talent, he carved out a distinct brand for himself in the Hindi film industry. Bollywood bowed to his name, and in that stature, he proudly upheld the pride and spirit of the Marathi man. Nana was not just a great artist; he was Maharashtra’s pride. His work through the ‘Naam Foundation’ to wipe away the tears of drought-stricken farmers is worthy of being inscribed in letters of gold.”
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, in her message, said, “Nana, a beautiful confluence of authentic expression in acting and sensitive social awareness, immortalised countless characters through his powerful performances, from the stage to the silver screen. Through masterpieces like ‘Natsamrat’, ‘Krantiveer’, and ‘Parinda’, he left an indelible mark with his acting. Nana Patekar shared an extremely intimate and affectionate bond with Ajit Dada. Thus, the void left by his passing is especially heartbreaking for me and our family as well. Alongside his art, the work he did for society’s underprivileged sections and farmer brethren, while upholding social responsibility, will forever remain inspiring.”
She said the acting world has lost a sensitive soul, a powerful voice, and an authentic artist.
The NCP(SP) chief, Sharad Pawar, said that with the passing of Nana Patekar, an extraordinary, sensitive, and impactful era in Indian cinema has come to an end today. Through his powerful acting, unique dialogue delivery, and remarkable natural ease in every role, he left an indelible mark, forever, on the hearts of audiences.
“While successful as an artist, his deep commitment to social issues and his active social service through the Naam Foundation was an equally inspiring aspect of his personality. With his demise, the Indian artistic world has lost a sensitive and talented artist, while society has lost a dynamic personality who upheld social responsibility. The indelible imprint of his acting, his thoughts, and his social work will forever remain in memory,” he added.
The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Harshwardhan Sapkal said, “The news of the demise of veteran actor Nana Patekar is extremely heartbreaking. As a sensitive personality marked by outstanding acting, social awareness, and a touch of humanity, Nana Patekar will forever remain in our memories. His passing has caused a great loss to the fields of art and society.”
Shiv Sena(UBT) leader Ambadas Danve said, “Losing Nana, who is at times outspoken, loving, stern, and big-hearted, is undoubtedly a loss for his film fans; but it is also a great blow to the countless people like me who adore his simplicity. Today, as Marathwada and Maharashtra languish under the shadow of drought, the absence of a sensitive soul like Nana will forever be felt. This untimely exit is utterly heartbreaking!”
Maharashtra Minister of Cultural Affairs Ashish Shelar noted that with Nana Patekar’s demise, the Indian cinema has lost a sensitive, resolute, talented, and authentic artist. “He was the recipient of numerous awards in the film industry, including the Late Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award 2013, presented by the Government of Maharashtra. Emerging from a middle-class working Marathi family, Nana Patekar left an indelible mark on acting through immense hard work and his distinctive style. Today, we have lost a genuine, spirited, festival-loving Maharashtrian man from our mill town,” he said.
He announced that while considering the unparalleled contribution of actor Nana Patekar to Marathi plays as well as Marathi and Hindi cinema, the state government has decided to conduct his last rites “with full state honours”.

‘Udta Teer’ actor Rupinder Walia recalls his first meeting with Ayushmann

Actor Rupinder Walia, who was recently seen as a Sikh agent in the Counter Terrorism Squad (CTS) in ‘Udta Teer’, recalled his first meeting with protagonist Ayushmann Khurrana on the set.
Rupinder remembered Ayushmann making him feel extremely comfortable as they were introduced during the rehearsal of a fight sequence.
He shared, “The first time I met Ayushmann paji was during the rehearsal of a fight sequence. He was already rehearsing when the production team introduced me, and he said, ‘Oh, you are Rupi paji, I already know you. I have heard your kissa from Akash Kaushik.’ I was overwhelmed. Here was a senior artist who went out of his way to make a newcomer comfortable, and I was already mesmerised by his presence. That someone of his stardom receives a newcomer this way is something I can’t put into words.”
Rupinder further shared that the shoot did not feel like work to him as the atmosphere on the set was extremely relaxed.
“He is a true gentleman who knows how to put others at ease. During the shoot, he would come and rehearse every scene with us, and the atmosphere became so relaxed that it didn’t feel like we were shooting. It felt like something happening in a family,” he went on to add.
Backed by Dharma Productions in collaboration with Sikhya Entertainment, ‘Udta Teer ‘ marks the directorial debut of Akash A. Kaushik.
The laughter ride revolves around an agent who forgets his identity in the middle of a mission and starts believing that he is an Indian counter-terrorism officer.
Along with Ayushmann and Rupinder, the ensemble cast of the drama also includes Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Raghubir Yadav and Brijendra Kala, along with others.
‘Udta Teer’ got a theatrical release on 23 October 2026 and opened to mixed reviews.

Esha Deol backs South Indian accents amid trolling, cites Sridevi, Hema Malini, Urmila Matondkar’s example

Actress Esha Deol has come out in support of South Indian accents amid discussions around actors being trolled for their Hindi diction.
The ‘Dhoom girl’, in an exclusive conversation with media, said that such linguistic nuances add to an artist’s individuality rather than take away from their performance.
The actress, who is the daughter of veteran actors Hema Malini and Dharmendra, said she herself sounds like her mother who is a South Indian while delivering dialogues, particularly in Hindi.
She stated that she believes that an actor’s distinctive way of speaking is part of their identity.
“I sound a lot like my mother when I am saying my dialogue, especially in Hindi. But that’s me, and the person who’s taken me on board to play a particular character knows that. So I think it sounds really sweet and cute. I enjoy hearing people with a little accent,” Esha said.
She also cited the late legendary actress Sridevi, her mother Hema Malini and actress Urmila Matondkar as examples of performers whose accents became part of their distinctive screen identities.
Speaking about Sridevi, whom she affectionately referred to as “Shri aunty”, Esha said she admired the way the actress spoke and recalled being a huge fan of Urmila Matondkar, whose accent she also found appealing.
“Like Sri aunty used to have her little accent, my mother, and even Urmila. I am a huge fan of Urmila, and I loved her little accent that would come. But that’s what makes them stand out. That’s the uniqueness, I think, every actor,” she said.
Esha’s observations also bring to mind Hema Malini’s distinctive Hindi dialogue delivery, including her characteristic way of saying “nahi”, which became a recognisable part of her screen persona.
Sridevi, too, was widely recognised for her distinctive Hindi diction, influenced by her South Indian linguistic background. Despite facing challenges with the language early in her Hindi film career, she went on to become one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated stars.
Esha’s comments come amid renewed conversations around the trolling of South Indian actors for their accents. The actress’s remarks underline the importance of recognising linguistic diversity as a natural part of India’s cultural landscape, rather than expecting every performer to sound identical.
Talking about Esha Deol, the actress is returning to the screen with the action-crime drama Pratap, marking her return to Hindi film projects after a prolonged gap.
The debate around South Indian accents in Hindi cinema has resurfaced recently, with actress Rashmika Mandanna talking about facing online trolling and criticism over her Hindi diction and accent.
The actress, who made her mark in Kannada and Telugu cinema before becoming popular in Bollywood, and has spoken about embracing her South Indian identity rather than feeling apologetic about how she speaks.
Lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar, actress Madhoo have come out in support of the actress.

Mumbai Police invokes MCOCA against all accused in Tiger Shroff firing case

The Mumbai Police on Tuesday invoked stringent sections of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against all the accused arrested in connection with the firing incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff.
An official statement said that provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), 1999 have been invoked in DCB CID CR No. 143/26, registered on 19/10/26 u/Ss 109(1), 3(5) of BNS r/w sections 3, 25 of Arms Act; with permission of the competent authority under Section 23(1)(a) of the said Act dated 27/10/26.
Accordingly, Sections 3(1)(ii), 3(2) and 3(4) of MCOCA have been added to the case against all accused.
A case against the accused was registered by the Mumbai Police on October 19 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
Subsequently, the approval to invoke the MCOCA was granted on October 27. Police said that the investigation in the case has been expedited considering the organised crime background linked to it.
Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
Earlier, the Mumbai Crime Branch established the alleged motive behind the firing incident involving Tiger Shroff, stating that the attack was carried out with the objectives of extorting money, establishing the gang’s dominance and creating fear among the public.
According to the Crime Branch’s investigation, the accused allegedly involved in the firing incident have links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The police have alleged that the gang targeted Tiger Shroff as part of an attempt to strengthen its influence, intimidate people and secure financial gains through extortion.
The Mumbai Crime Branch has stated that the accused were allegedly operating as active members of an organised crime syndicate.
Investigators believe that the attack was not an isolated act but part of a planned criminal conspiracy intended to achieve financial benefits, assert the gang’s dominance and spread terror within society.
The accused carried out the attack using illegal and lethal weapons as part of a pre-planned conspiracy targeting the star.
The investigation has also revealed that the alleged conspiracy was coordinated through an inter-state network involving several locations, including Delhi and Mumbai.
