On the suspension of 33 Opposition MPs for the remainder of the Winter Session today, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said, “Such tyranny won’t work. It is not acceptable to the country. They received this mandate on the trust of the people. They received the mandate because they had considered national security an important issue. But the most secure building is being attacked today. Neither the Prime Minister nor the Home Minister speaks on it. If we demand your statement, you suspended us from the House – this is not acceptable to anyone. We will continue to fight for this…If we are being suspended because we are demanding (statement), then this is a badge of honour for us.”

New Delhi, Aug 21: Former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, the Opposition INDIA bloc’s nominee for the post of Vice President, filed his nomination papers here on Thursday, saying his candidature is a commitment to the values of the Constitution and the strength of India’s democracy.

“Today, I had the honour of filing my nomination papers for the office of the Vice President of India as a joint candidate of the Opposition parties. I did so with a deep sense of humility, responsibility, and unwavering commitment to the values enshrined in our Constitution,” Justice Reddy (retd) said in a statement after filing his papers.

Reflecting on his career, he said: “My life in public service as a judge of the Supreme Court of India, as a student of law, and as a citizen rooted in the democratic traditions of this Republic has taught me that the true strength of India lies in the dignity of every individual, the protection of constitutional morality, and the unity in our diversity.”

He said that the contest is about more than individuals. “This election is not merely about one person. It is about reaffirming the idea of India as envisaged by our founders — an India where Parliament functions with integrity, where dissent is respected, and where institutions serve the people with independence and fairness,” he said.

Calling the Vice President’s role as Rajya Sabha Chairperson a custodian of parliamentary traditions, Reddy pledged: “If elected, I will discharge that role with impartiality, dignity, and a steadfast commitment to dialogue and decorum.”

Expressing gratitude to opposition parties and citizens alike, he added: “I am deeply grateful to the leaders of the Opposition parties for reposing their trust in me, and to the countless citizens who continue to inspire this collective struggle for justice, equality, and harmony. The Lok Sabha passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 by voice vote amid din from the Opposition on Wednesday. The bill prohibits all forms of online money gaming—whether based on skill, chance or a mix of both.

The Bill was approved through a voice vote following brief comments from Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, whilst the opposition MPs staged demonstrations. The proceedings of the lower house of Parliament were adjourned for the day after the passage of the Bill.

An online money game refers to digital activities where users stake money with the expectation of receiving monetary rewards or other benefits.

After receiving approval from both Houses of Parliament, persons involved in online monetary gaming will face penalties of imprisonment for up to three years and/or monetary fines reaching Rs 1 crore.

Following the passage of the Bill in Lok Sabha, Ashwini Vaishnaw told media that the Bill aims to promote e-sports and educational & social games while regulating online money games.

“Online money games are causing addiction among people. Reports have surfaced that online gaming is wiping out family savings, and several cases of suicide have also been reported,” he said.
