Abu Azmi Urges Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis To Declare Sept 8 As Holiday For Eid Milad-un-Nabi

Mumbai: Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi has appealed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to declare an official holiday on September 8 for Eid Milad-un-Nabi, after the Muslim community decided to shift its main procession to that day.

Traditionally, Eid Milad-un-Nabi, which commemorates the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, is observed on September 5 this year, with processions taking place a day later on September 6. However, since Ganesh Visarjan is also scheduled for the same day, the All India Khilafat Committee, which organises the main procession in Byculla, postponed the event to September 8 to avoid logistical clashes and ensure smooth conduct of both festivals.

In a post on X, Azmi explained that the decision to reschedule the procession was taken in the interest of maintaining communal harmony and public order. “This year, Ganesh Visarjan is on September 6, which coincides with the Eid Milad procession. To strengthen Hindu-Muslim unity and to ensure peace, the Muslim community has decided to celebrate the procession on September 8. However, the government has not yet declared it as a public holiday. I request the Chief Minister to issue an official GR and announce September 8 as a holiday to respect the sentiments of the Muslim community,” Azmi wrote.

This year’s celebration carries added significance as it marks the 1,500th birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. Sarfaraz Arzu, chairman of the All India Khilafat Committee, said the decision was taken after careful deliberation. “For the third consecutive year, Eid-e-Milad and Ganesh immersions are falling on the same day. Like in previous years, we have decided to postpone the rally to avoid inconvenience. We hope the government recognises this and declares a holiday on September 8,” he said.

Along with Azmi, Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh has also written to Chief Minister Fadnavis urging for a government holiday on the day. Similar requests have been sent to Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.

Brent crude steady as India’s Russian oil purchase keeps prices in check: Report

Published

on

Mumbai, Sep 26: Brent crude prices have remained steady, trading between $67-$69 per barrel, with no fresh global triggers driving volatility, and India’s Russian oil buying has kept the prices in check, a report showed on Friday.

India, among the biggest importers of crude oil, has reiterated that its top priority is ensuring affordable energy for its citizens.

“The country’s imports currently stand at around 1.50 million barrels per day — a level expected to hold steady — with Russian supplies playing a critical role in keeping costs down,” according to the report by Emkay Wealth Management Ltd, the wealth management arm of Emkay Global Financial Services.

The next big move will hinge on how US sanctions and tariff policies unfold in the coming months, the report mentioned.

China, too, is ramping up Russian oil purchases to meet domestic demand.

The report further stated that with both India and China sourcing heavily from Russia, oil prices are expected to remain range-bound, a trend that comes as a relief to importing nations.

Lower energy costs are particularly significant for India, where they help cushion inflation and stabilise the broader economy.

As energy security moves back into the global spotlight, India’s strategy of securing affordable crude supplies underscores the delicate balance between geopolitical shifts and domestic economic priorities, said the report.

Meanwhile, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has hailed New Delhi as an “awesome ally” and said he is a “huge fan of India,” while calling for deeper energy cooperation between the two countries.

Addressing a press conference in New York this week, Wright praised the country as a “dynamic society” with a “rapidly growing energy demand.”

“A lot of my early time when I arrived in my position was dealing with India, the world’s largest democracy, an awesome ally of the United States, a fast-growing economy, a truly dynamic society that has rapidly growing energy demand because people are increasing their prosperity, their opportunities. I’m a huge fan of India. We love India,” he added.

His statement comes as Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also called for expanding India-US energy trade.

They Call Him OG, starring Pawan Kalyan and Emraan Hashmi, has stormed the box office with a record-breaking opening. Released on September 25, the gangster drama raked in an estimated Rs 70 crore in India across all languages on its first day. Adding the presale collections of Rs 20.25 crore, the film’s total opening day haul touched an impressive Rs 90.25 crore. Reportedly, the film earned around Rs 150 crore globally, making it the biggest Indian opener of 2025.

According to Sacnilk, the Telugu version dominated with a massive 69.35 per cent occupancy on Thursday, peaking at 77.51 per cent during night shows. The Tamil version registered 18.36 per cent occupancy, while Hindi and Kannada versions stood at 10.37 per cent and 9.19 per cent, respectively.

In North America, They Call Him OG set new benchmarks by emerging as the highest-grossing Telugu film of 2025 from its premiere shows alone. It also secured the fourth-biggest Telugu premiere day ever in the US, ahead of major releases like Jr NTR’s Devara: Part 1 and Prabhas’ Salaar: Part 1.

This success marks a strong comeback for Pawan Kalyan, who faced a setback earlier this year with Hari Hara Veera Mallu.

With this historic opening, They Call Him OG has outshined the debuts of recent blockbusters Chhaava and Saiyaara, and even surpassed Rajinikanth’s underwhelming Coolie. It also beat Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan.

The buzz around OG was already sky-high before release, thanks to extraordinary advance bookings. With presales of Rs 20.25 crore, the film scored the fifth-highest advance booking in Indian cinema history – beating even biggies like Kalki 2898 AD (Rs 55.3 crore), Devara (Rs 49.9 crore), and Salaar (Rs 49 crore).

Directed by Sujeeth and produced by D. V. V. Danayya under DVV Entertainment, They Call Him OG features Pawan Kalyan as Ojas Gambheera, popularly known as OG.

The action-crime thriller follows his return to Mumbai’s underworld a decade after disappearing, only to confront Omi Bhau (Emraan Hashmi), a ruthless new kingpin. Themes of power, betrayal, and redemption play out against the gritty backdrop of Mumbai’s criminal underworld.

The film also stars Priyanka Mohan, Arjun Das, Prakash Raj, Subhalekha Sudhakar, Rao Ramesh, Sriya Reddy, Harish Uthaman, Abhimanyu Singh, Ajay Ghosh, Saurav Lokesh, Vennela Kishore, and Akira Nandan.
