Mumbai clocks all-time high of 52,896 new property registrations in Jan-April: Report

Mumbai, May 1: Despite geopolitical tensions and the global economic slowdown, Mumbai scaled an all-time high of 52,896 new property registrations in January-April this year, which represents an 8 per cent rise over the 48,819 properties registered during the same four months in 2024, according to a report released by real estate consultancy Anarock on Thursday.
An analysis of the data of the Inspector General of Registration (IGR), Maharashtra, reveals that the overall revenue collected from property registrations in Mumbai stands at around Rs 4,633 crore in the first four months of 2025. This is 21 per cent more than the same period (January – April 2024) last year, when the revenue collected was Rs 3,836 crore.
“Further analysis of the property registrations data and demand trends from January to April shows that the average ticket price of sold homes was Rs 1.57 crore, reminiscent of 2023 and 2024, when it was Rs 1.56 crore,” Anarock chairman Anuj Puri said.
“In the corresponding period in 2021, the average ticket price was significantly lower at Rs 1.02 crore. Thus, it witnessed a 54 per cent jump between January-April 2021 and January-April 2025. In short, 2025 continues to record higher sales of pricey homes than in the more affordable categories,” he added.
According to the Maharashtra State Revenue Department, the overall revenue collected by the authorities from property registrations and the total registrations in Mumbai in January to April 2025 are at record highs, the report states.
A deeper analysis reveals that April 2025 recorded the highest number of property registrations in this month over the past seven years (since 2019), with over 13,080 properties registered. The revenue collected in April 2025 stood at approximately Rs 1,115 crore. In comparison, April 2024 saw around 11,648 property registrations — about 12 per cent lower than this year. Revenue collection last year was also lower by nearly 5 per cent.
Considering that housing sales remained tepid across MMR (including Mumbai) in Q1 2025, the spate of registrations in the first four months of the year is remarkable. As per Anarock Research, Q1 2025 saw approx. 21,930 units sold in Mumbai — about 28 per cent less than in Q1 2024.
Puri said, “A key factor behind the surge in property registrations in this period is the record-breaking activity in March, when 15,501 properties were registered. This spike came close on the heels of the announcement of a 3.9 per cent hike in Maharashtra’s ready reckoner rates for FY26. March 2025 marked the highest property registrations in the past three years. Prior to this, the highest figures were recorded in December 2020 with 19,581 registrations, and March 2021 with 17,728 registrations.”

Air India plane crash: 144 victims identified by DNA tests, recovery efforts intensify

Ahmedabad, June 17: Four days after the devastating crash of Air India flight AI-171 en route from Ahmedabad to London, authorities have confirmed that 144 DNA samples have been successfully matched as of noon Tuesday, according to Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi.
The identification process is being led by a combined team from the State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University, working around the clock to bring clarity to grieving families.
“This is a highly sensitive and emotional task. Every match is not just a technical confirmation, but a step toward giving closure to families waiting in anguish,” an official from the forensic unit said.
Emergency response teams remain stationed at the crash site in Meghaninagar, where investigators continue to recover personal belongings and body fragments amidst the wreckage.
Authorities have stated that all efforts are being made to ensure the dignity of the deceased and transparency in communication with the victims’ relatives.
Tata Group, which re-acquired Air India in 2022, has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs one crore to the families of each of the deceased from the AI‑171 crash near Ahmedabad. In addition, Air India has immediately released an interim relief payout of Rs 25 lakh per family — and to the lone survivor — to cover urgent needs.
The group will also cover all medical expenses for the injured and pledged financial support for rebuilding a damaged hostel at BJ Medical College. Chairman N. Chandrasekaran described it as “one of the darkest days in the Tata Group’s history.”
As of June 17, rescue and recovery efforts at the Ahmedabad crash site of Air India flight AI-171 remain intense and deeply coordinated. Over 300 firefighters, supported by 60 fire vehicles and 20 water bowsers from Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, ONGC, and other nearby agencies, continue to clear debris and extinguish smouldering wreckage.
On the ground, three NDRF teams, 150 CRPF officers, Indian Army personnel, and teams from the CISF, BSF, and Western Railway Disaster Management are conducting systematic searches for remains and missing belongings.
Specialised sniffer dogs are aiding in the recovery of human remains, while Ahmedabad Police, responding to disturbing reports, have deployed animal rescue teams to safely relocate stray dogs scavenging at the crash site.

EOW raids Indore Municipal official over disproportionate assets allegations

Indore, June 17: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Madhya Pradesh Police on Tuesday launched raids at multiple locations linked to a senior official of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), following allegations of amassing disproportionate assets.
Acting on a complaint, an EOW team from the Indore division arrived at the IMC’s Horticulture Department and conducted a thorough search of Assistant Superintendent Chetan Patil’s office. The search operation lasted for over an hour, after which the office was sealed.
Simultaneously, another EOW team, accompanied by police personnel, reached Patil’s residence in the city’s upscale Gulmohar area and began a detailed search operation. The raid at his residence was still ongoing at the time of filing this report.
According to official sources, the action was initiated following credible inputs that Patil had amassed wealth exceeding his known sources of income. Preliminary findings suggest he had acquired multiple properties in his and his family members’ names, not only in Indore but also in other districts of Madhya Pradesh.
Sources familiar with the investigation told media that Patil, who has been serving in the Horticulture Department of IMC for several years, had faced internal allegations in the past involving financial irregularities, including suspected siphoning of public funds.
During the raids, EOW officials seized several incriminating documents, including property papers, bank account details, and digital devices such as laptops. Jewellery, a significant amount of cash, and other valuables were also recovered. An evaluation of the seized assets, bank lockers, and financial records is currently underway.
This is the second such action against an IMC official in recent months. In March, the EOW had raided properties linked to Rajesh Parmar, a suspended Assistant Revenue Officer of the corporation, in connection with similar charges of disproportionate assets.

Karnataka BJP is doing politics over stampede case, says Dy CM Shivakumar

Bengaluru, June 17: Commenting on the Karnataka BJP unit staging a protest on Tuesday to condemn the June 4 stampede incident, which claimed 11 lives in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress President D.K. Shivakumar said the party was “carrying out politics over dead bodies”.
Speaking to the media after participating in the ‘Parisara Nadige (March for Environment)’ event, organised jointly by the Forest Department and the Karnataka Pollution Control Board in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said, “The BJP is doing politics over dead bodies. Shall I give the list of dead bodies from their time? What all had happened then?”
“At no point does the Congress party want to carry out politics over dead bodies. It is a natural disaster, and we condemn it. Let them do it, because their political base has been destroyed, and they want to show their presence, hence they are protesting,” said the Dy CM.
“Apart from this, there is nothing. No common person or social activist will cooperate with them. Everyone knows. The government has ensured that action is taken against those who are guilty. We have also appointed a One-Man Commission; if the BJP has anything to convey, let them convey it to the commission,” he stated.
Shivakumar questioned, “The BJP has been carrying out politics over dead bodies right from the beginning. There have been many stampede tragedies that have occurred in the country. I had been to the Ahmedabad plane crash site; did I say anything there? Did I blame the Central government for the incident? What about stampedes that were reported from railway stations and temples in Uttar Pradesh and North India?”
“Hundreds of people have died in religious events; who is responsible for all this? I have stated this: If you are stronger, there will be more enemies; if you are less strong, you will have fewer enemies. If you are not strong at all, there won’t be any enemies,” he stated while answering a question.
“They fear us and are doing anything, and you will see us regaining power in Karnataka in 2028,” said Shivkumar. When asked whether he would take the oath as the CM, he said the “Congress government would come to power”.
Talking about the environmental event, Shivakumar stated, “The Forest Department and the Pollution Control Board organised this event on the occasion of World Environment Day. While it was celebrated on June 5, the event is organised today. This year’s message is to ban plastic. The programme is being held to conserve water and the environment. More than 5,000 children participated in the event. They marched around the Vidhana Soudha building and gave a message to the public.”
“I have already sent a message to start climate clubs in all schools. There should be awareness created to conserve the environment, and every student must adopt a tree. Already, 50,000 students have enrolled in the tree adoption programme. The green cover should be protected; if there is no green cover, we won’t survive,” Shivakumar stated.
Shivakumar held a placard, rode a bicycle, and also participated in the march with schoolchildren. Minister for Forest Eshwar Khandre, Congress MLA, and the Chairman of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, P. M. Narendraswamy, also participated in the event.
