Maharashtra: ‘83% Of ‘Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana’ Beneficiaries Are Married Women,’ Says Official Data

Mumbai: Married women make up as many as 83 per cent of the beneficiaries of the Maharashtra government’s ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana’, as per official data.
The scheme, which is supposed to have played a role in the BJP-led coalition’s victory in the November 2024 assembly elections, provides monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 to women aged 21 to 65 who are married, divorced, widowed, deserted, or destitute, and whose family income is below Rs 2,50,000 per year.
The benefit is also provided to one unmarried woman per family.
The scheme has, as of now, some 2.5 crore beneficiaries, though the government is now carrying out a scrutiny to omit those who are ineligible.
Data indicates that married women constitute 83 per cent while unmarried women constitute 11.8 per cent of the beneficiaries, a senior official said on Thursday.
Widows account for 4.7 per cent of beneficiaries, while `divorced, destitute or deserted’ women collectively make up less than 1 per cent of the cohort.
Divorced women account for 0.3 per cent, deserted women 0.2 per cent, and destitute women for 0.1 per cent of beneficiaries.
The highest 29 per cent of beneficiaries are from the 30-39 age group, followed 25.5 per cent from 21-29 age group and 23.6 per cent from 40-49 age group.
Women aged 60 to 65 account for only five per cent of beneficiaries.
Pune district has recorded the highest number of applications for the scheme, followed by Nashik and Ahmednagar. On the other hand, Sindhudurg and Gadchiroli districts have recorded the lowest number of applications.
The scheme was rolled out in July last year. Before the November elections, the ruling Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena promised to increase the amount under the scheme to Rs 2,100 per month. After coming to power, the new Devendra Fadnavis-led government said the promise would be kept, and an announcement to this effect is expected in the coming Budget.
After coming to power, the new Mahayuti government ordered a review to remove ineligible recipients. So far, five lakh beneficiaries have been excluded, with officials estimating that the number could rise to 15 lakh.
Women owning four-wheelers, those in government employment or those already receiving benefit exceeding Rs 1,500 from other schemes would be disqualified.
At the time of its launch, the scheme was said to cost the state exchequer Rs 46,000 crore annually.
It has also faced allegations of fraud and political manipulation.
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Thursday accused the government of misleading women voters by rolling out the scheme before the elections and slashing the number of beneficiaries after coming to power.
“The government distributed funds to women as an incentive to get votes. After assuming office (after the elections), it imposed various conditions that have significantly reduced the number of eligible beneficiaries,” he said.
The Fadnavis government intends to reduce the number of beneficiaries by as much as 25 per cent, the Congress leader claimed, calling it a betrayal of voters.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar Directs Officials To Draft Policy For Renewing Lease Agreements Between Sports Clubs & Iconic Mumbai Maidans

Mumbai: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has instructed officials to draft a detailed policy for renewing lease agreements between sports clubs and the iconic Oval, Azad, and Cross Maidans. Alongside the lease renewals, he stressed the importance of upgrading basic infrastructure, including the construction of washrooms and changing rooms at each of these grounds.
Pawar chaired a high-level meeting at Mantralaya to discuss the lease renewal process with officials from the revenue, sports, public works (PWD), and urban development departments. The meeting was attended by Sports Minister Dattatray Bharne, Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare, Finance Department Additional Chief Secretary OP Gupta, and BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
Maharashtra Deputy CM On Promoting Sports
Reiterating the government’s commitment to promoting sports, Pawar stressed the importance of a well-structured policy that balances the interests of sports clubs and government regulations.
“Encouraging sports and supporting athletes is a priority for this government. All relevant departments must collaborate to frame a fair and comprehensive policy,” he stated.
The Oval, Azad, and Cross Maidans serve as crucial training grounds for thousands of athletes in Mumbai. Managed by the revenue department but leased to sports clubs through the sports department, these grounds host over sixty clubs that provide training facilities to aspiring players. As part of the infrastructure upgrade, Pawar instructed officials to ensure that new washrooms and changing rooms are strategically placed at the corners of the grounds so they do not interfere with sporting activities. He also reinforced that the playgrounds must remain dedicated to sports purposes only. Once finalised, the comprehensive lease renewal policy will be presented before the state cabinet for approval.

Maharashtra Politics: ‘Do Not Take Me Lightly,’ Eknath Shinde Warns Opponents

Mumbai: Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who appears increasingly frustrated with the administration under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, made a veiled statement on Friday. Issuing a warning to his political opponents, Shinde said, “Do not take me lightly. Those who need to understand this message should do so.”
While Shinde’s comments are typically directed at the opposition, particularly the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), this time, his pointed remark has sparked speculation that his warning might be aimed at a different target. The statement has stirred political circles, leaving many to question: Who was Shinde really addressing?
The growing tension appears to stem from recent developments, including investigations ordered by CM Fadnavis into decisions made during Shinde’s tenure as Chief Minister.
Earlier in the week, he had dismissed any reports of internal strife within the Mahayuti alliance, saying, “There is no cold war; everything is thanda-thanda, cool-cool.” However, just a day later, reports surfaced that Fadnavis had initiated an inquiry into a Rs900 crore housing project in Jalna, approved by Shinde during his term as CM. Additionally, the BMC scrapped a Rs1,400 crore tender for a slum cleaning project that Shinde had backed last year.
At a public rally in Nagpur, Shinde’s anger was once again on display. Addressing the media, he declared, “I am a staunch Shiv Sainik of Balasaheb Thackeray and Anand Dighe, and I should be evaluated accordingly. Those who underestimated me saw what I did – I toppled the MVA government and established a double-engine government. We, as Mahayuti, had set a target of winning more than 200 seats, and we succeeded in securing 232. So, no one should take me lightly.”
Taking a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray, who recently referred to himself as a ‘tremor man’ following continued defections from his party, Shinde said, “Some people claim to be ‘tremor man,’ but the public already pushed them out during the last elections. Those who abandoned Balasaheb Thackeray’s ideology and expelled dedicated leaders from their party will face further rejection.”
He further emphasised his party’s growing influence, remarking, “People invest in shares that have market value, and my Shiv Sena has high market value.”
Concluding his speech, he reassured his supporters, “As long as you(people) stand with me, no force can challenge me.”
